To be fair, the only way you'd sell a V8 Lex is with a year's tax.

I'd be more interested in why they only show pictures of the record book up to 48k miles and nothing for the next 100k. If I was selling with a FSH, I'd be showing every page of the book.

    €2650, NCT 09/16.

V8 motoring that's nice for the price.

that ad has been up before with the exact same pics in the same place and for the same price. Im 100% sure it is in this thread too.

Around a year or more ago too

Surely a '00 Jag is still a long way from vintage or classic though?

Edit: NVM. Just had my first look through the dross that makes up the DD vintage and classic section.

I have a mint 06 W164 ML 500 with only 54K miles on it that I use for towing (rally car) and the odd time when I need more space than my runabout Mini Cooper S. Can't beat V8 power for a proper tow machine. Taxed as 5 seat crew cab (€330) and it is off this week for pro-conversion to lpg. It currently returns about 22 mpg on motorway use, and 18 when towing. I reckon I will see around 32 mpg cash equivelent (towing), before the VAT savings. Way more economical than a proper large engined diesel jeep. The ML itself cost well less than half the price of a similar diesel 4x4.
    Will report back actual outcome!

would actually be easy enough to live with. My only issue with it would be that its not that well spec'd and since your already paying the 1809 tax , the s430 or s500 would be better options as you get more power, more spec and only a slight increase in fuel consumption, which would amount to 1-200 a year if you were only using it for short trips or weekends.

76000 miles but the steering wheel looks well worn.

I get angry seeing Mercs of that vintage rusting so badly. That is not an old car!

Currently have a 335i which is great fun but thinking about scratching the V8 itch. However, choice doesn't seem to be nearly as good as it was a year ago.

    Criteria:
Under €5k (purely due to resale difficulties)
Newer than 2001 or older than '95
    Not blue
    Not be too ruinous
Don't really care about NCT as long as price reflects

Plans would be to keep for a minimum of 6 months, longer if it's a good car etc. Generally do all my own work on cars, generally only in the garage to get tyres changed and wheels aligned or to maintain dealer service history.

Aluminium v8 jags are serious motors dressed in old clothes, quick economical and reliable , and handle like a lightweight , which they are.

The 01cl 500 being sold by Mercedes has an NCT from a Mazda, so I'd skip that one
And Frank Hogan advertising a "private Sale" ???

I've always liked the XJ alright.

This is shockingly cheap, I imagine it's a wreck?

Is it a daily driver or a weekend car?

My advice if you're thinking of a Mercedes would be to go for the facelift models (2003 onwards) with the widescreen entertainment system and clear indicator lenses (as opposed to opague). They are far nicer to be inside, and much more functional (e.g. handy factory bluetooth, easy and cheap to retrofit TV/dvd or smartphone screen miror).

The main expensive problems with the mercs is the air suspension. It's a simple enough system, but parts can be expensive. They are lots of great aftermarket parts out there, both new and reconditioned e.g. arnott industries. There is so much info out there about these cars that you can do almost any job yourself if you have a lift.

You have some strange criteria there, commited!
    commited wrote: »

With any luxobarge in here, it's prudent to just presume you won't be able to sell it on, and when / if something major goes wrong, it's an economic gonner. So just treat the purchase sum as a write-off. Or is this the very reason you want to keep budget limited?
    commited wrote: »

For insurance reasons? You won't necessarily have any problems insuring a pre '01 (but post '95) car and you won't necessarily be able to get classic insurance on a pre '95
    commited wrote: »

Some would call that brave, others would call it foolish. Plenty of cars out there, why not just pick one with a long NCT? At this end of the market, there simply isn't enough of a discount for cars without NCT

Unless of course you are very confident you can spot any issue yourself. Do you check emissions before you buy a second hand car? I thought not ;)

Thanks for the advice. It'd be a daily driver, currently doing about 8k/year private and 6-10k/year business.
    unkel wrote: »

Indeed! Then again, they're my criteria so they can be as strange as I like, I think the only strange one is not blue and that's a long story :)

I agree and disagree, I don't think I'd face a €5k bill on a car these days without an alternative to keep the car on the road and I believe there is always a market out there for any car but I want to keep the purchase price low enough that depreciation doesn't overtake tax/insurance&maintenance! I probably won't be able to justify a V8 in years to come so better to take the opportunity while I have it.
For insurance reasons? You won't necessarily have any problems insuring a pre '01 (but post '95) car and you won't necessarily be able to get classic insurance on a pre '95
I recently renewed my policy (nothing over 15yo) and to be honest, I wouldn't want any older than 15 years old unless it was a classic. I meant to type '85, not '95 as I was toying with getting an SEC or SL and buying something relatively sensible as a daily.
Some would call that brave, others would call it foolish. Plenty of cars out there, why not just pick one with a long NCT? At this end of the market, there simply isn't enough of a discount for cars without NCT
Every used car purchase is a gamble, an NCT is no guarantee that the car is good or will pass a future one. I've seen too many people take comfort in an NCT disc only to have it shattered <12 months later with a huge repair bill (having paid a premium at purchase) but I take your point. Still, sometimes the discounts are worth the risk :)

When I was looking last year, there were a sea of CL500s for sale at genuinely good prices - have they all gone to the UK?

They are a fantastic thing to be honest.
As the last in line of the traditional looking xj and given the aluminium build, these would seem like an excellent choice to buy and just keep.
