Didn't say all, but over 100 teens die every year from alcohol related crashed, alcohol Ireland. That's 100 too many imo, so get over yourself sunshine

I hate scumbags but I do love full stops. I suppose I can't have it all.

I also was present on Howth yesterday and was shocked with what I so. It was my first time in howth and what a beautiful place it is. Im 30 years of age and grew up in limerick city and got up to plenty of stupid mischief in my teenage years. Although limerick has a bad rep for scum, I've never witnessed anything like this in my life. We like all teenagers were drinking at that age etc but it was always done out of the view of the gardai. We were scared of the guards and would never have abused and assaulted them like what happened in portmarnock last week.

I thought it d never say it, but kids today!! No respect, they really don't give a sh#t. Howth was packed with tourists and they must have been in shock. As we walked towards the pier where people (?) were swimming, when we realised what was going on. I was with my girlfriend and my 11 month old daughter and had to turn back as my gf would not walk any further. I'm glad we did.

It really was an intimidating atmosphere and was completely out of control. Young ones wearing just bikinis and covered in fake tan. Young skanger fellas with their stupid geordie shore haircuts falling about the place ringing Deco on the phone.

Now the op said the garda did a good job and I agree to an extent but as we walked along to the pier a yards car drove down as groups of oompa loompa girls were sprawled out with bottles of vodka and groups of anto's carrying slabs of liquor the guards drove straight past.

Now I understand the guards are understaffed but sure if a group of guards were present at the entrance to the pier where scangerfest was taking place, they could have at least tried to take the drink which was so blatantly displayed off the little vermin. 100s of them passing through the picturesque village of growth carrying bags of liquor. Although I fear the problem is the guards are afraid to intervene to prevent a probable riot.

100s of liquored up kids on a pier edge, I'm surprised no one was killed. I did see a fire engine head down the pier, I thought they were gonna hose them to sea!!

So a worrying conclusion....the guards don't have the power or force to intervene in case of a riot and we as a society are going to have to accept it?

As an original raver from the 80s thats the first one I have seen with no sound system - maybe a few decent tunes would encourage Irish people to actually enjoy the sunshine - instead of macho bully style posturing - the sad thing about Ireland is our anger gets misplaced - when the sun comes out we fight / stab each other - yet when the country is sold down the swaney with ineptitude & greed & corruption only a couple hundred or so bother to protest circa budget day 2008 - disallusioned Irishman.

Dont know why anyone here is defending the scumbags or making excuses for them. These underclasses thrive on other people 'understanding' them.

Yeah, because there's no better way to deal with a problem than by not understanding it.

    Christ.

And where are all the people defending"scumbags?" Some are saying that the issues aren't as bad as others are making them out to be, some are saying that it's important to understand why anti-social behaviour occurs in order to try to to prevent it, but no-one's defending thuggery.

On every one of these moronic threads someone drags out the liberal PC-Brigade strawmen who defends "scumbags," but no-one ever actually does that, and the people who bleat on about the "bleeding-heart do-gooders" can never produce a post of someone defending them!

Given the great weather recently i agreed to bring a relative from down the country to Howth for the day yesterday and to have a nice peaceful day enjoying the sun and the cliff walks.

So we set out on the DART from Dun Laoghaire and once we reached Connolly, droves of 15/16 year olds started cramming onto the train. We just presumed they were all just heading for a normal day on the beach... Turns out we were wrong.

OP let me get this right?
you left South County Dublin and headed to the city-centre, then crossed the river to the North-side?
and you're wondering why you encountered an increase in skangers?!!

how long have you actually lived in Dublin?

Clontarf, Castleknock and Malahide vs Ballyfermot, Tallaght and Clondalkin.

Northside being rougher than the Southside is a dated myth.

This is the real legacy of the disastrous Celtic Tiger days, all of these particular youngsters have grown up in a world where money, celebrity and greed was the common backdrop. That backdrop has created a sub-section of young people who have no sense of manners, community, decency or empathy.

Add in the factor that now the money has gone, the new social currency or goal for this group is appearing rough tough and violent 24/7, it is the only currency left that they have been psychologically programmed to attain since they have been born.

i take our point. there are small pockets of respectable Northside areas, but they are surrounded by vast areas of skangerland.
the exact opposite applies Southside, small pockets of skangers surrounded by large areas of respectability.

Crumlin/Drimagh feuds. Gallanstown Riots. Multiple shootings in Tallaght. Ballyfermot and Clondalkin based gangs. Chronic heroin problems in Inchicore over the years. Oh and Dolphin's Barn is lovely for a stroll on a saturday night...

I know people like this, who think that crowds of teenagers hanging out in public and chatting is automatically "anti social behavior" even if they're not actually doing anything to hurt anyone.
Trust me, I'd be the first to roll my eyes at frightened oul' wans staring at teenagers like their presence alone is a threat. But the last week in Howth has been madness. Literally hundreds of teens, with mob mentality and the hot sun behind them, robbing, squaring up to gardaí, purposely distressing and offending other people, and causing havoc on a criminal scale.

I don't really see what fake tan has to do with the situation. I did see some girls getting off the dart in just bikinis, with nothing other than their phones, and I did see quite a few girls who were wearing very inappropriate stuff, so I can understand why their appearance might be relevant, in terms of 12 year olds out in thongs being quite disturbing. But I also heard quite a few of them talking in quite posh/not-rough accents, so I don't think the oompa loompa/anto comments are warranted. There are plenty of kids from rough backgrounds that don't cause this kind of trouble, and plenty of kids from well off backgrounds that took part in all this trouble.

AFAIK the party was meant to be on the beach, the entrance to which was in fact being checked by gardaí. It's just a pity that with facebook, they're able to congregate in numbers too big to control with a small garda force.

I just don't know why they'd all purposely plan a day with a few drinks in the sun in a lovely town, and go to the trouble of travelling to Howth, if they don't give a crap about preserving such a great opportunity. They left the place a kip and ruined the day for all the genuine sight-seers.

Saw something similar during the week. A load of dickheads getting on the train discussing where they'd get their drink for the beach. Had the misfortune of being on the same train back when the inevitable fight broke out resulting in gardai and an ambulance being called and a 20 minute delay on the train while some passengers were threatened. Not really sure what exactly can be done to stop it.

With the weather we have had it will bring all types of people out to the beach . To me the biggest problem is the fact that a select few will give everybody a bad name . I do think the gardai really need to clamp down with zero tolerance on street drinking with hefty fines .
