Money to invest

We've very lucky to be in the position to invest some money for our future recently. Our problem is we don't know where to start. Is there a stockbroker that anyone could recommend or is that even the way to go about it? We also would like to invest in property too. We're based in Galway so thinking that Galway city is our best bet in order to be able to manage the property. We're not sure if we should be buying a house that will see it's value increase in the long term (as in choose a good area) or to choose a house that will pay for itself in rent over the long term.
We also have the option of investing abroad but again we don't know a whole lot about it and was wondering if anyone has gone down this route and could advise us on where to get more information etc. Thanks in advance.

Commodities are very undervalued compared to other assets such as bonds and stocks at the moment. Worth a look.
