Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Hi folks,

I've just graduated from my hdip year and have been offered a part time post teaching 5th year geography and 5th year maths.

I'm unsure as to which topics of the leaving cert geography syllabus I must teach to 5th years. And the same goes for maths.

Is this something that will be given to me when I go back in August or should I already know?

Apologies if it's a silly question.

    Thanks guys!

You can start where you like in geography. Core unit 1 is physical geography, which is easy enough to teach and for the kids to understand. You could then skip on to look at geographical skills in unit 3 with an eye on the field study which will be sent out in November. Towards the end of the year come back to unit two and regions. If you have time have a go at the field study before the end of fifth year. It really takes the pressure off them in 6th year.

Algebra is a good place to start for 5th year Maths at either level.

Or coordinate geometry, since they should have a pretty good basis in it from the junior cert.

Absolutely. I like to do algebra first to make sure they can solve any quadratic or simultaneous equations we may come across!

The order is ok, but the length of time to be spent on certain things can be very short, you'll know your class so cater to their needs.

Before you make any decision on topics to start with you need to check in the school if the Maths and Geography departments have yearly schemes of work. In my school all teachers follow a common scheme of work for every year group. It wouldn't go down well if a teacher deviated from the schemes. Ours are in folders in the staffroom so you could give the Principal a call and ask about it.
