I just upgraded from an 8 mb/s unlimited usage package to a 12 mb/s package but have discovered that a 50 GB limit has appeared. Do Eircom charge if you go over this limit?

found this after a quick google:
At the moment eircom do not charge any excess download charges on the standard broadband packages. Although eircom do reserve the right to charge as per the broadband terms and conditions - "to charge for exceeding the download allowance on a customers package". Effectively what that means is that a customer is free to exceed the download allowance without penalty.

So they can, but they generally don't.

Not true, they do apply the fees. We had them in the past before we escaped to UPC and somebody I know was hit with them only yesterday.

It's usually determined by fair use. Most people won't have a problem but it's the small minority who tie up the bandwidth for other people that cause problems and ISPs tend to focus on that minority.

We generally download ~100GB on a 50GB package and have not yet been charged for exceeding this limit.
