Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Kung Fu school in China

    Hi all.

I'm travelling in China at the moment and i think i'll have two months at the end of the year free. I'm considering attending a Kung Fu school for the two months.

I've always been curious about learning some sort of martial arts. My main objectives would be fitness, lose weight, and self-defense. People say go to thailand and learn Mau thai, but that seems a bit extreme. I'm not looking to become a professional fighter, i'mm loking for good close-combat self defense. Probably something like wing tsun?

Here are a couple of schools I found through google:

    http://www.shaolinskungfu.com/
    http://www.kungfuschoolchina.com/
    http://shaolin-kungfu.com/

    But this post
    http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080406112434AAR5kGa

says that there are also alot of schools in the big cities. I would be looking for somewehere with training and accomodation (and wi-fi!!). I would put in 100% effort- and would be looking for somewhere that has rigerous exercise. Apparently some places also teach mandarin which would be cool.

Could anyone recommend a school? Or recommend a particular style?

    Thanks!

Going to china to train Kung Fu is no different to going to Thailand to train Muay Thai. The only difference would be your intent, if you go to a Muay Thai school to get fit then you can do that, if you go to give you something to do for 2 or 4 or 6 hours a day then you can do that. You could go to China to train Kung Fu to use it in MMA and train like a mother****er for 10 hours a day...

Just saying that not everyone who goes to Thailand to train Muay Thai would do it to be a pro fighter.

Complete speculation here but I'd imagine the people suggesting Muay Thai in Thailand over Kung Fu in China is more about a style recommendation than a recommendation on training locations.
If you are a complete beginner then it will make very little difference if you are training in Thailand, China or Ireland for that matter. As a beginner there will be people who will be better than you which will help you improve.

What I'm saying is there is nothing to stop you training Muay Thai in China. Maybe give both Thai and Kung fu a go and stick with the one you enjoy the most.

Martial arts Training camp is an ideal place where individuals can improve their physical fitness and martial arts skills.

I found two real Shaolin Temple websites

    Shaolin temple :www.learnshaolinkungfu.com

My Sifu's, Sifu (Who is also his brother) has been traveling since the 1980's to Hong Kong. The style is Lung Ying Shaolin Kung Fu. It is a fantastic self defense system and as such there is no competition element. I train in Dublin and the other location is Slane Co. Meath which is a full time training temple. The training is very authentic and has been handed down in a very exacting and detailed fashion. It requires a lot of mental determination and physical toughness. They may be able to connect you with the school in Hong Kong

I would add that 2 months is barely scratching the surface of any proper authentically trained style. I'm training about 10 years and I feel that there's still so much more to learn. The forms are hand to hand for quite a number of years and there are weapon forms later. When you get back you may choose to join assuming that its geographically convenient.
