    Haughey's house is now down to €3 million. There is supposed to be a few potential buyers from the US viewing it this weekend.
    I don't understand why the state don't hold on to it as it is in Nama. It would be such a shame for a house with so much history to end in the hands of an overseas owner;

    It's 3 million on 80 acres. Much higher for the full estate of 247 acres.
    Are you willing to pay an extra % of income tax in order to fund this? Nama owns it, but also owes money through the debt.

    Is it significantly historical? Not really.
    Yes it has a nice ballroom in Adams style and it was designed by gandon, but why is it necessary for the state to own?

    What's wrong with a family buying it, returning it to its former glory and enjoying it as it was originally designed for?
    It's not even the nicest gandon building. A bigger Shame is emo court in Laois. At least it's pleasing on the eye.

    The state can't afford to buy and run ever country pile that still stands today. The ones of significant importance such as Castletown House etc is fine, but when you have people waiting on trolleys in hospitals, is it wise to spend millions on a former Taoiseach's gaf?

    So the PPR says, if it went for €1.25m then my guess is that it didn't include the 80 acres that was listed for the asking €3m price. Maybe they paid €1.25m for the house with 5 or 10 acres with it.

    Folks, you're talking about a house of historical significance but keep referring to Charlie Haughey. It was of course designed by Gandon for John Beresford, the Revenue Commissioner. As such, it was a favour, as Emo was, to two of the leading lights on the Wide Streets Commission.

    Beresford drove the Georgian Dublin project, aided by people Like John Dawson, 1st Earl of Portarlington. The story of the Dublin we recognise today is the story of Gandon, Beresford and Luke Gardiner. Hence, abbeville is significant. along with Emo Court and Sandymount House, they are the few villas that Gandon saw into reality.

    I agree that not all large mansions can be saved. But the one that stands out like a sore thumb is Carton House. It is shameful that a house with its provenance is not a government-owned and protected house and grounds. Its too late now, the damage is done.
