Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

They are much better promoted domestically, I suppose.
That's true, but there needs to be an appetite there in the first place for a high standard of domestic football that is non existent in Ireland.

But then you might find players, who don't bother to play decent football in front of a few hundred souls...

Ah, thought you knew what you were talking about there for a second. Never mind.

I put it into different words then...

You were talking about an appetite for a high standard of domestic football. Did you not mean supporters with that, who want to see a decent match?

So are you saying that LOI fans don't know their football?

No, I'm only saying, that the attendances at the matches are a bit disappointing.

Which has a negative feedback effect. People see that the games are poorly attended in poor stadia, assume that this is a reflection of the standard, and then think "why would I want to pay money to see that?". Especially when the UK is used as a barometer - attendances and the standard of stadia are generally lower in Ireland than anything in the football league here in England.

And I think you're right that this undoubtedly influences players too. For example, playing here...

...in front of seven or eight thousand every week is going to be far more appealing than playing at Richmond or United Park, for example.

Zalgiris won again tonight against a Polish team.

I know people lose interest after they have played the Irish team but they have really done well so far in Europe and havent lost a game or even drawn a game (I think) this season. It puts Pats performance in perspective.

To be honest I think too much is talked about whether the league is stronger or weaker based on European results. LOI teams have beaten european teams in Europe before but the league itself at the time wouldn't have been all that great. I think it's just become a throwaway thing to say.

We drew 2-2 over there, in hindsight worst possible result considering we should have won but sat back.

Loads of teams we beat playing this week, Siroki beaten by Udinese, Elfsborg somehow beaten by Celtic, Shaktar on the way to final CL play off spot, Rijeka. beat someone

TBH Really I think you can speculate all you want about how strong the league is but the only way we have of gauging our teams capabilities is in Europe. Thats it. You obviously cant base it on one season. UEFA themselves do it on 5 seasons together which is fair enough I think.

TBH I think there has been a drop in standard of the league in the last few seasons. It might have something to do with the recession - I dont know.

The only way? Surely the actual draw might be a small factor too. I just think different seasons are relative. People who go to games a lot can make up their own minds about how strong the league is themselves.

Of course the draw is hugely relevant but over 5 years you are going to get an evening out of luck. I agree this year was very difficult. I mentioned it a few times previously in my posts.
