Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Hi guys..
Quick question about the GEDCOM files. I work away with my own on "Family Tree Builder" but so far that's all..

If I wanted to import someone elses file for printing, does the file bring in the pictures associated with the people as well ??

    Cheers
    bbam

Not in my experience. It's a very unsatisfactory generic file.

    Oh.
And is there an alternative format that does that?

No, I doubt that such a format exists.

    Thanks folks.
So importing a gedcom file brings the structure of the tree, names-dates-relationships etc. and then match photos after?

Basically yes. Any time I've imported, I've spent a lot of time tidying afterwards. It's one of the reasons I wouldn't migrate to a different piece of software now....my tree has 2000 people on it, would take forever.

I would agree with Ponster, I don't think you'll find such a thing exists. GEDCOMs are very simple files that consist solely of text. They are intentionally stripped down in order to be compatible with different programs.

Even if there were GEDCOM-type files that did keep information about photos, each photo is a separate file itself and they would all have to accompany the GEDCOM.

As has been mentioned, a GEDCOM file is just a text file using a specific format. As with any plain text program (like notepad), photos cannot be displayed. You can read your GEDCOM file with a text program.

However, what you need if the path for the photo, that you want to import. Usually, in my Brothers Keeper program, photos are kept in one folder. Thus, if you have a means of having the path in the GEDCOM, then you just transfer the required photos in a separate folder.

I have never tried to export a GEDCOM, but I have created one from an excel spreadsheet which has provision for the path for any kind of non text data. However, where this is placed in the gedcom files I don't know as I have never used the option.

    EDIT:
Just checked and there is a tag "FILE" which enables the path of any photo or multimedia file to be recorded. However, bearing in mind that each genealogy program handles things differently, it will probably import/export in some programs but not others.

    So..
As regards having family trees printed.. Is this something people pursue??
If I were to offer this service what would people recommend or advise.. It looks like I'd be importing the GEDCOM file, then matching pre id'd photos to the family tree manually..

I have the ability to print and stretch the trees onto canvas frames as I currently stretch pictures.. Or supply the trees printed onto 190g poster paper or 250g paper photo quality paper..

I'm not touting for business here folks.. Just sounding out the idea before I invest much time into it..
