Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    This was a great event.
For €100, I got to listen to some excellent coaches, rehab specialists, & a great nutritionist, got 6 coffees, 2 lunches, loads of freebies from ON and a ticket to the Leinster Connacht game.
Was in the RDS from 9am til 9pm.

    Great day out.

    Fair play to Leinster rugby.
    Really well ran event.

Some People in the fitness "industry" could learn a thing or two on pricing from them.

American games always seem so complicated though! There's always as many or more officials as participants.

    When to FTDP...

Absolutely pissing thru the Smolov base meso cycle. W3D3 with 185kg 7x5 today was the easiest day so far.

    REALLY tempted to add another 10kg and push into a 4th week and go 175 4x9, 185 5x7, 195 7x5 and 205 10x3...

    Thoughts?!

My thoughts stick to it as listed the whole Russian stuff relies on training most of you lifts around 75-85% of your max.

Do you think the added tonnage will elicit a greater adaptation response? Why? if you can answer those you have your answer

Agree+1...., you've answered the question while posting it. You'll know yourself what to do when you cross that bridge. Having being to your squat workshop, it's enjoyable to watch/read you go through what you put me through, albeit a hell of a lot lighter.

I'd say go for one more week. Especially while you're on an 'up' in your wave.

Then again, I'm probably not qualified to comment.

    Looking for a new programme.:

    Strength Focussed.
    4/5 days a week.
    Involving Barbells/Dumbells.
    Decent Workload.

Have done SS before. Liked it and Im leaning towards that again as its simple and effective but would like to hear thoughts from peeps here.

If one ankle is always cracking and the other isn't, is it possible that this is a sign of imbalance?

    (extremely vague question I know!)

can you still add 5kg to the bar each workout and recover within 24 hours ready to lift again with the same muscles?

If yes, do SS until this no longer applies,
if no then look at mad cow (more deets can be found on Strong lifts blog)

Whats your numbers on the big four?

Whats your numbers on the big four?

Been a while now since I tested but I reckon Id have:

    Bench- 85kg 5x5
    Deadlif-t 140kg 1x5
    Squat- 120kg 5x5
    OHP- 50kg 5x5

Thats a conservative guess based on my relevant final 10x6 numbers being:

    Bench (decline) 82.5kg 10x6
    Squat 110kg 10x6

    I really dont know though.

Why don't you do four days this week and test a max on each day then do some accessories

Had planned to take the week off. Have other stuff to get sorted re job and the likes and also have some niggly back and shoulder injuries I want to rest up.

I'll do that next week though and then come back here for advice? Along what lines are you thinking though by asking that question? Just gauging how much more could be gained from a standard 5x5 or 3x5 programme?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,057 ✭✭✭amazingemmet

I'm just trying to get an idea of your maxes as 3x5 and 5x5 are ok for beginners but you might be on the stage of looking at weekly or monthly progress rather then sessionly and in that case there's better ideas.

    Westside:

    Day1. Max effort squat
    Day2. Repeat effort bench

    Day3. Repeat effort squat
    Day4. Max effort bench

Swap bench and squat for OH press and deadlift every 6-8 weeks.

There's a decent thread on it around here somewhere.

Absolutely. I spent the next 9 months doing westside after that. Best training decision I ever made.

I haven't lifted properly since my knee surgery last year, but I'm going to test my 1rms this week and give westside another run.

Anyone else ever try a plank for max time?

I remember when I was about 15/16 being told that the NZ All Blacks squad had to be able to do it for 3mins. I gave it a go and just about managed it. Granted, I probably weighed about 60kg at the time.

I've no idea what I'd do now. Will give it a go this evening.

I think once you go over 60 seconds, you should drop down to 30s and add weight on your back
My most ever was 80kg plus BW (100kg) for 30s.
    Tough

How'd you manage to stack 80kg on your back?

I'd imagine it's a challenge worthy of The Krypton Factor.

I was just wondering, as a bit of fun. I rarely go over 60s.

Because I train alone most of the time, adding weight is not really an option for me unless I start hassling randomers. I do my core work as a circuit no breaks, and if i'm doing planks they go at the end.

30s with BW after doing 3 other ab exercises is tough going, believe me!

Gave it a go. Got 3 mins. Only got really difficult in the last 30s, and I trained core yesterday.

I reckon 5 minutes is very doable.

About 2 years ago I did planks a lot, pretty much every day or every second day, and after a few months I'd worked up to a 6+ minute hold, so it's definitely doable. Now 2-3 minutes kills me.

I got up to over a minute when I was doing them nearly every day, but now 10 slow breaths kills me
    Practice!

    Ahem.

Stuart McGill says planks should be held for 10 seconds tops, for multiple sets.

So my 13 second max planks are even a little bit risqué.

The rest of you guys are just doing it wrong. Do you guys even blah blah blah.

I can usually manage to get 20-40kg on my back by myself, after that, you need someone to stack the plates.

I get far too jealous reading threads here. Today I walked down the town twice(because I left the keys in the front door) and that was too much for my body to do. I've decided it best not to workout until my thyroid is better :(

On the plus side I've also decided not to count calories, or macros and to just eat food. I gets to stuff my face in my fat pants to get healthier!

    Daily lols, veracity doubtful
    reddit wrote:
I go out to lunch with co-workers daily. We're in our late twenties and early thirties. One day, halfway through our meal, a woman took her glass of water and nonchalantly poured it on top of her food, until all her food was sitting in a big puddle. Everyone stopped eating and was like, "What the **** was that?" She was like, "Oh. That? When I'm done eating I pour water on my plate so I won't be tempted to pick at my food." Immediately, all the other women at the table were like, "What a good idea! I'm going to start doing that too." Then within two minutes every other woman had poured their water onto their plates. The guys kept eating for half an hour more.

From then on, it was like an unspoken, passive-aggressive competition between the women: who will be the first to pour their water onto their food? It was ****ing absurd and became this huge joke around the office.

So one day we were at this really nice restaurant, it had won a James Beard award. That day a woman poured her water onto her food after five minutes. The waiter noticed and told the chef. The chef came out and said, "Ma'am, I apologize if there was something wrong with your food. Please allow me to prepare you another dish without charge: anything you like." The girl explained why she poured her water onto the plate and the chef politely nodded and walked away from the table. Later, on our way out, the owner approached us and politely but firmly told us not to return. He said it was an insult to his chef to flood half-eaten plates.

After that the men and women started eating separately. As far as I know the women still flood their plates.
