Anything marketed as healthy, even when it's junk usually gets swept up. People don't care what or how it got to that form but if it's marketed as the healthy version they'll snap that **** up.

Theres a lawsuit against quest bars in the US as they don't have proper nutritional information labelling on their bars. A lab tested their bars and found it to be wrong. Can't remember how far wrong they were though.

Think they are just too expensive myself, cheaper to make your own

Sucralose? I tend to avoid it. I'd be interested in trying to make my own variant of these without it.

Im planning to experiment with bounties for fun, you make oreos and we'll swap

    They're still processed packaged food.

Same, they are expensive protein also. 25 dollars for 12 biscuits, **** that.

The apple pie flavored ones are amazing. I wouldn't call it good quality food and I'm not surprised at all that they've been stung on the labelling.

Still though... apple pie, nom nom nom

Someone brought an actual apple pie into work today. One of those ones that's like an apple pie that mated with an apple crumble. NOM.

I'm sure if you tested a lot of foods you'd get those results.

Thery're by no means a decent way to hit daily protein. But they're better than the majority of protein bars imo. Nearly every other low carb bar gets by on a technicality by using sugar alcohols, when there are prob no different than sugar nutritionally.

Clarence Kennedy hasn't quit has he? Or been retired by injuries rather? Some chat online a few places that it is the case...so I should assume it's nonsense.

He was training away over Christmas anyway, working part time in Dunnes in Tralee.

I was only wondering about him earlier, hope his training is going well wherever he is but the fact he hasn't been active on youtube in ages makes me think all is not well, hope I'm wrong.

Interesting article on Jamie Heaslip the Leinster, Ireland and Lions no.8. For anyone that doesn't follows rugby, Jamie is wordlclass in his position and is very well known as a workhouse who is very rarely injured, despite his position. Seemingly he puts significant emphasis on nutrition, mobility and prehab. Fan of Kelly Starrett too.

I'm gonna give it a go on Monday, I'll let yis know how it goes.

I think 2 years ago the first round was 7min AMRAP burpees, now that was boring.

So I gave 14.1 a go, got 216 reps (4 rounds +30+6), first 6 minutes wasn't too bad, after that it got a bit messy, my grip started to go. think I could have paced it better at the start but happy with the score :)

    Well done! Very respectable.

I'd completed the judges course so judged a bunch of these over the weekend. With very rare exceptions most went out too fast.

Also of the few that went a second time to try and improve their score no one succeeded. Going flat out at will wipe you out for a couple of days.

Nice start though man, good luck with 14.2!!

Read in that Heaslip interview today that he's an investor in the Kitman Labs crowd. Looks like some impressive stuff.

How long until this type of daily monitoring is common practice for "prosumer" level athletes (or whatever word you wanna use)?

Was pitched a full hormonal spectrum analysis off a company recently.. nice in theory but think it was a bit ****e cos it didn't give the custom programs promised.

A good system can't be far off now tho.

I think it involves the too much for the average person to buy into doing myself. Even at the elite level very few teams would put as much into it as Ireland and the Irish provinces do. Its changing but very slowly.

    Huh? Go on...

A large number of teams will rely on something along the lines of a readiness questionnaire (appetite, sleep, how they are feeling, illness, injury etc) and some kind of power based test (countermovement jump, broad jump, something like that) and once they dont reveal anything negative they will plough on.

What that video shows and what the IRFU/kitman labs have been developing is a range of tests (mainly mobility based), which would be more sensitive to potential issues than the above, along with readiness questionnaires and constant monitoring through GPS and other bits of info

    This is very interesting.

I (in my admitted ignorance) always assumed that top level, elite level teams would have a fairly specialised and individual approach to training and its components.

Its kind of mad to think that its left up to players own judgement.

"Animal protein-rich diets could be as harmful to health as smoking."

"people should restrict themselves to no more than 0.8g of protein a day for every kilogram of body weight"

    Link on The Guardian.

It's still too early to draw conclusions from the study in question according to some nutritionists, but it's cause for some thought nonetheless.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,510 ✭✭✭runawaybishop

Well at least they did say this
The apparently harmful effects of a high-protein diet might be down to one or more other substances in meat, or driven by lifestyle factors that are more common in regular red meat eaters versus vegetarians.
Its mad the way some of these studies presume the people are identical in every other way other than the one difference they look into.

They bring up smoking, I would presume a smaller % of vegetarians would smoke, as on average I would expect they are more discerning about what goes into their body. A quick search finds this
    http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/261382.php
Vegetarian groups were inclined to be older, more highly educated, and more likely to be married. They also tended to drink less alcohol, smoke less, exercise more and be thinner.

When you see premierships football teams having an injury crisis or a player getting injured again and again are the backroom team even doing proper assessments or are some people just brittle?

They certainly do proper assessments and if anything better ones as there is more money available to help with it I'd imagine. Some players are brittle but any contact sport brings with it injuries.

This video gives a little insight and is a couple of years old as well

Made this doohickey yesterday (banana for scale) :pac:

    IMG_20140304_190950.jpg

In the gym I'm in atm most of the machines have what I think is a 7.5kg increment per pin hole, which for me is way to high for tricep pushdowns etc

So I can just stick this in one of the holes and hang a 2.5kg or 5kg plate from it and work up linearly for dat progressive overload

    Works pretty well

  • Registered Users Posts: 401 ✭✭irishbuzz

You hang a 5kg plate from it? That's one hell of a strong banana.

Extra sets on days where you feel like there is loads more in the tank. Rep range should follow original presecribed work set.

After you have pushed your last set aiming for a pr you keep adding weight 5-10% until you cannot get the required reps then you are free to keep adding weight for doubles and singles . Wendler also gives the option to cap your pr set to allow you focus more on the joker set if you wish. Im doing 531 at the moment . Made good gains on all three lifts.

    14.2 looks tough!!
    3 mins to complete:

    2 rounds of
    10 Overhead Squats @ 42.5 kgs (30kgs for ladies)
    10 Chest to Bar Pullups

    If all work is completed:

    further 3 mins (i.e. 3:00 - 6:00) to complete:

    2 rounds of
    12 Overhead Squats @ 42.5 kgs (30kgs for ladies)
    12 Chest to Bar Pullups

    If all work is completed:

    further 3 mins (i.e. 6:00 - 9:00) to complete:

    2 rounds of
    14 Overhead Squats @ 42.5 kgs (30kgs for ladies)
    14 Chest to Bar Pullups

    etc, etc

**Work cannot start early - i.e. if you finish the first two rounds at 90 seconds you must rest 90 seconds before starting the second round**

One of the female athletes doing the announcement run got the first round of 20 reps done which was absolutely incredible work imo!

Currently working on olympic lifting, starting with the power clean. I've had ongoing instruction from a trainer in my gym.

He mentioned that I should be squatting and front squatting a lot to help with the cleans (and to help develop strength for the clean and the snatch). He mentioned that he usually does a week of 8x3 then 8x2 and 8x1 over a period of three weeks.

Are there any reputable structures I could be adhering to to progress my strength in this area?

Yeah looks tough, my chest to bar pull-ups are pretty weak so don't think I'll do verry well but I'll give it a bash.
