I really enjoyed the series, Ok, it could have been a few episodes shorter. I think a lot of people are disappointed because it was so different from the first season. I enjoyed the bleakness of the characters and the storyline and I'm glad that they didn't cop out, no pun intended, with some happy ever after or redemptive ending.

it was watchable and it interested me enough to stick with it but I didn't really enjoy it.

rays end was fairly disappointing to be honest - he could have easily grabbed the second mans gun and along with his own shotgun he would've had enough firepower to take out at least a couple more.

personally for me Vince Vaughan just couldn't cut it as a gangster the fist fight with the man with the mouth full of gold teeth in episode 3 was a lowlight but he didn't seem that convincing in the firefight in the mountains either. he showed enough to suggest that he should be doing more serious stuff though.

    cracking cast that were wasted

Just watched the finale. It was very meh.

I don't buy this excuse that it's being compared to the first season. I think even when looked at by itself it's still quite poor.

Farrell was the only decent character but his character became very weak towards the end.

    Back then he was money....
And he didn't even know it..

Anyone watching the new series on sky atlantic called Show Me A Hero? It's about a housing issue and the politics surrounding it in Yonkers in New York in the 80s, created by david Simon of The Wire - only watched the pilot but already more compelling than anything season 2 of TD gave us. Really shows the gulf in talent between guys like Simon and the rest - and kind of makes me wish he would go for something more exciting like gangland LA noire...

i was reading an interview with damon lindeloff who made lost and makes the leftovers on HBO, and he was talking about the last season of game of thrones, and about people saying its the worst yet, not that it was bad but it wasnt as good as others, and he made a point about great shows, that even if they manage to get one great episode a season thatll be enough to justify the whole season, but that one episode needs to be backed up by a solid build-up to the big pay off, and i do agree with that completely,

like last seasons 6 minute tracking shot was probably a big highlight of season 1, but it only worked cause we believed that rust could pull it off, unlike this season say when woodrugh was killed, we didnt give a ****, it was meant to shock us, but it didnt, just like frank and rays deaths didnt matter either, none of them ever seemed like they knew what they were doing,

but like i was saying, even if one outta 8 can be great then enough has been done, or not been done in this case,

What a load of crap. "We" most certainly did give a **** and to be honest I wonder what planet some of you are on. It was crackin good television and for those who cannot seem to grasp that, well, better luck next Season ;)

Woodrugh's death shocked me. I was rooting for the guy to escape and thought he had managed it.

Ah but while it may have been cracking good television, we have come to expect so much more - What made the first season of True Detective the talked about show it became (and earning it all that critical acclaim) was that it was far more than cracking television - it created an iconic character in Rust, and a perfect offset to him in Marty, capturing beautifully the world the two cops operated in - the second season failed woefully at achieving this.

Yes but that was never going to happen in the second season.

Rust and Marty were partners, only recent partners I think. You had them trying to figure each other out, establishing a working relationship, visiting each other's homes.
Interspersed with that you had them in the present, recalling the case, remembering details about each other and the time they spent together.
Then you had them face to face again (12 years?), down the line. Working together again, trying to overcome awkwardness and different emotions to trust one another.

None of that could happen in season two. They were thrown together, a temporary task force with different agendas, essentially spying on each other.
Bezzerides went to Ray's house once and had a cup of coffee. I think that was the extent of any of the investigator's home visits. Any meetings they had in the original investigation was purely professional. At the warehouse place where they were running the investigation from, Velcoro and Woodrugh say they have to go, essentially just putting in the hours.

I think it was intentional not to have two partnering detectives with the expected dynamic in the second season so they couldn't be compared directly with Rust and Marty.

could you point me the direction of the outpouring of sympathy towards them,

hey if worked for you fair enough, I think the deaths were a joke,

woodrugh ran half a mile up an underground track, killed 5 people down there, then climbed a random ladder and the door he went through was jammed shut, he forced it open yet someone managed to be standing behind the door:rolleyes:,

ray took out 2 guys with a handgun not a bother, then just gave up even though he had a shotgun, and couldve grabbed one of their rifles, and that was after then planted the worst tracking device in history on his car that may aswell have been welded onto the car, even though they were just around the corner and were following him anyway,

frank for a guy looking over his shoulder and skipping town wasnt keeping a great eye out, but his death was probably the one i bought best, he was never gonna give up a suit with 3.5 million worth of diamonds in it,

i watch a **** ton of tv, so somethings like that really grate on me, like i said earlier even if one episode was great then the entire season would have been worth it, but none were, and ive said already out of all the shows i watched over the summer this was bar far the worst, probably cause i dropped about 5 shows i was watching last summer cause they were also bad, but looking now i would have better watching one of them, at least they had coherent writing,

A couple of times it felt like it was building to that great episode but never delivered, which probably made it worse.

Franks death scene was good but it was too late (obviously!) by then. The finale wasn't bad but as you noted, there's no stand out episode to remember it.

I know people are sick of the comparisons but I watched episode 5 of season one there last night. Head and shoulders above this nonsense.

I am really at the point now of pitying some of you :pac: I believe this is a case of "you simply don't get it". You found this show "by far the worst" of what you've watched this summer? i'd love to hear the list of outstanding shows you think topped TD.

I found it moving, brilliant, intense and a very different experience from season one, something I appreciate as it was a gutsy/risky move. The background of abuse and dysfunction that each character was trying so hard to leave behind, and yet each remained ensnared in, was almost a shadow character coloring every scene with tension and unpredictable darkness. I loved them, particularly Frank, and Vince Vaughn made him truly shine. a remarkable performance that I think will garner more accolades for him down the road.

That's very much a minority opinion though!

    Is that surprising though?

I think the second season was never going to be perceived as good as the first, even if it was better.

Look at Game of Thrones and Walking Dead, recent seasons have been slammed, "show is going downhill", etc.

i listed them a page or two back, your more than welcome to check, dont pity me at all, i dont need anyones pity, quite happy to have my own point of view,

like i already said if you liked it fair enough, i as i said i did not, and have expressed my opinion in more than necessary detail in this thread,

Just finished watching season 2 there now. I loved the first series but this was very underwhelming overall.

All of the main characters were appallingly clichéd, the dialogue was ridiculous/pretentious beyond belief, the big action sequences were so over the top they were just silly and over all the series was utterly lacking in tension throughout.

Colin Farrell and Rachel McAdams were both very good, I felt sorry for Vince Vaughan and Kelly Reilly - they both did their best with the awful dialogue they were given, Taylor Kitsch was as leaden as a lump of lead piping encased in a lead coffin.

True, it was a weak enough summer. Topping TD2 would be Tyrant (2nd season), Mr. Robot, Hell On Wheels (season 5), Humans. The Brink and Sex and Drugs and Rock 'n Roll are good for laughs and won't have you checking your watch thinking "is it nearly over already".
Mr. Robot, Humans are sci-fi / bladerunner dystopian fantasies. Hell On Wheels is still the best little horse opera since Deadwood left town and Clint hung up his hat.
    All six are not boring.
As for aired / airing this year in general - True Detective 2 doesn't belong in the same sentence as.
    The Americans
    Leftovers
    Manhattan
    The Good Wife

Leftovers and Manhattan have only had a season so far so lets leave them alone for future judgement. The Americans is the best show on TV at the moment and The Good Wife is proof positive that network TV can produce quality drama past the season 5 mark.

Closer to home, Ripper Street and Penny Dreadful both do mayhem, mischief and murder on a par with True Detective 1.

Anyone else got some shows to add that are better than TD2 and aired somewhere this year ?

Witnesses/Les Temoins seems fairly decent so far (but I have only watched two episodes)

Speaking as a man, I feel belittled and objectified. I'll need to watch some lesbian porn now to make up for this.;)

Actually, the porn industry are probably hard at work (pun intended) getting Rude Detective 2 ready as we speak.

Have the Vaughan doubters shared their opinions yet? Knew he wouldn't be bad. I won't say he was amazing, but he definitely did a brilliant job and showed that if he wants to he can do roles that have you take him seriously. If he goes from this back to another stupid, sh!t comedy then the guy's a fuking moron.

Didn't really like Kitch's or McAdam's characters, but Farrel's was good just because he was as close as we got to Rust Cohle in season 1.

Overall, it was a disappointing step back from season 1. I think that's probably because it was rushed in an attempt to get this season out a year after the first season like normal TV shows do. It's such a pity they didn't choose to make this show a mini series and take 2-3 years after season 1.

Its funny actually I never found myself thinking Vince Vaughan was handsome until I saw him in this role. Now ever time I see him I just think he's gorgeous. :):): Hes well able to play a serious role, should do more after this.
