Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

What would be the ideal attenuation for 100/20?

Attenuation is a function of distance (and frequency). The shorter the distance, the lower the attenuation and the higher the speed potential. So to answer your question - round about your attenuation (or less).

The ideal attenuation is as low as possible, in real life that is being right next to a cabinet with a clean line. You are syncing at a stable 100Mbit with no issues. You're line is as good as you need for the products that are available at the moment. You won't be seeing over 100Mbit for years I'd imagine.

Can't multi quote as I'm on mobile but thanks to the both of ye for that.

When I had Vodafone before I had an attenuation of 20.1 then when I got Sky it jumped to 35 and now it's 13.7 I think.

Suppose I was just wondering :P

Yeah I'd imagine Eircom will milk their VDSL for a good few years to come!

Although the ESB Fibre rollout might make them hurry up with an FTTH rollout.

    Just a question.

Can Eircom limit the speed of what their competitors sell ?

I think technically speaking they probably can with QoS or limiting their profile or whatever but obviously they can't and would get into serious trouble with ComReg if they done so.

    Just wondering. Thanks.

In 2 weeks time getting a SamKnows box. I'm getting nerdy before I may which ISP

Technically anything is possible - but they don't. They have an obligation of non discrimiation anyway.

With ADSL (VF, SKY) the attenuation measurement would have been based on the loop length from your house to the exchange. Not sure why it would have jumped unless you moved from ADSL (under 8Mb/s) to ADSL2+ (up to 24Mb/s) which would involve an increase in frequency (and thus attenuation, but not a 15dB rise!).

On VDSL the loop length is just from the cabinet to your house, so it is much shorter and the attenuation is less even though the frequency has risen. Make sense?

Your attenuation is quite high at 17dB so you must be a good distance from the cabinet. At 9dB your SNR is no great shakes either, which means there is not much room for bumping up your speed until vectoring is turned on.
Thanks for the info. Is there any easy way to know if and when vectoring is enabled, from the stats page for example?

You'll see your SNR jump up a chunk all of a sudden.

Curiosity getting the better of me I checked the F1000 webpage via both IE and Firefox. Sure enough in IE on the "Network Setting" > "Broadband" > "Advanced" page the only xDLS settings ticked are "ADSL over PTM" which is marked as Disabled.
Checking the same page using Firefox I see that "ADSL over PTM" remains Disabled but "Annex M" is enabled as are "PhyR DS," and "SRA." PhyR US" is marked disabled. If, as I suspect, G.inp and SRA are features required to enable vectoring would it suggest that the indicators above show the implementation of vectoring or at least that the features to enable vectoring are present?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,401 ✭✭✭Nonoperational

G.INP and SRA are separate to vectoring.

Not sure what is going on with this connection today......

It was stuck on the 25/7 profile because of a billing name problem (apparently Eircom couldnt change the profile because the company name had a "&" in the name)

I log on this morning and see that the speed had been upped to 30/10......

I do a speed test and cant get above 22/4

So I restart and I get the below.....

    Anyone have any idea?

I have had a hunch for a while that the line has a problem..... Its very stormy in that location today........

I know nothing about gaming. System Monitor then xDSL Statistics for attainable rate.

Set your MTU to 1492 and disable the firewall on your router.
also assign fastest DNS to your console.
Not to mention open your NAT.
(You will see an improvement gaming wise.)

Your attainables might drop a little, but vectoring helps keep noise's effect low. Your local loop is so short it has very little length to actually have noise induced, so the chances of it becoming an issue are very slim.

I plugged it in on Friday and all the widgets should be firing by tonight. Interesting so far. Hard to beat the e-fibre stats page all the same but this should give some real life results over time, i.e., a decent reflection of actual speed and quality of connection.

It uses the wireless on the router to "monitor" traffic so basically the WiFi is disabled.

I got my log in details today and it's interesting to see how my connection is doing.

Be nice to get that free router at the end though!

You'll probably get the same one I have alright.

You leave everything as normal except you connect the WhiteBox into an Ethernet port on your router and then you connect everything that was connected via ethernet on your router to the WhiteBox.

So if you had 2 DeskTops in ports 2 and 3 you just move them into the WhiteBox.

I'm probably over complicating it but hope it makes sense!

They've disabled the USB Ports sadly however, when I connect my USB Handdrive it lights up.

I suppose you could flash DDWrt when the testing period is over.

    Got this WR741ND.

However - I actually am not using ethernet for any devices (all in a other rooms to my router) and I have Eircom TV - would the TV work connected to the White device?

** actually, I have an old Eircom modem/router. I could theoretically use this as an AP to my PC only (via wireless) and connect the white device between this and my F1000 - would any of you network guru's think this might work?

If you're using eVision I dont know if theres much point. The TV is hard QoS'd as part of a second vlan, it'll totally distort any testing done by the "whitebox" and Im not sure it'd work through it. Try it and see sure.
