You're comparing club training sessions to inter county championship matches.....doesnt merit any more of a response...Munchkin.
all I was pointing out was that theres massive demands on players that intrude in their work and personal life through the entire year and that having a game on Friday is not the first demand being made on players, and the regular demands on them through the year are arguably more than trying to arrange one Friday around being available that evening for a Championship match

For a lad with a family or even just in a steady relationship, a Friday evening game would actually be infinitely preferable to a Sunday game as your football duties are over on the Friday evening and you have the weekend for the wife (/partner/ girlfriend) and kids should you have some.

its also less of an imposition than the "voluntary" all day Friday session that Donegal had a few weeks back, which again is a good example of the non-matchday time that county teams themselves are expecting from players (on top of club committments)

Why was the Carlow game deemed suitable for Friday night rather than any other match? Is there a reason that this specific game has been picked for Friday night?

I'm assuming that it came down to geography as Carlow and Laois are fairly close together and within striking distance of Dublin. They have been looking for a game for a while to trial on a Friday night and this seemed to fit the bill. They really didn't think it through though!! :o

Was it ever tried in the league though? Why go straight for Championship?

League fixtures planned well in advance??

Qualifiers - you have the element of surprise in that you only know a forthnight in advance the pairing and can do it under the radar??

Or is that way too cynical?

Little bit, I don't think they're out to get anyone - but certainly a possibility Tom.

It was tongue firmly in cheek but sometimes I wonder about the thinking that goes into these things. Surely someone in Croker thought that this might get a reaction from players. I imagine the conversation went something like this (in my head they all have accents out of the D'unbelievables -

Drone 1 "I know let's play a game on Friday night, shure the groundball and eggballers get great crowds on a Friday night"

Drone 2 "Jaysus I don't know, bit tough on lads doing a hard days work especially if they work in the big smoke"

Drone 3 " Fúck it lads, it's worth a try for the qualifiers, shure most of the smaller counties are more worried about lads heading to newmerica anyway, no-one will notice. Gimme that list of games there."

Drone 1 " There ya go - Carlow at home - nice and close to the big smoke - don't get much attention in the papers, good train service, what ya think?"

Drone 2 "Yep, that'll do - go for it - we could earn a fortune on this boys"

Looks like I am very much in the minority thinking this is worth a try :o Guess I can't be right all the time :p

Ah it's not that it's a terrible idea, in an ideal world it would be brilliant to have friday night games. It's just that this attempt is an inconsiderate, bumbling trainwreck!

Anyone think Tipp have a chance v Galway?

No, Michael Quinlivan gone to the states for the summer and Barry Grogan broke a finger playing hurling last weekend, that is Tipp's entire scoring threat gone.

That said interesting fact - Galway have never beaten Tipperary in Senior Championship Football ;) I expect that to change soon though.

Interestingly Liam O'Neill claims in the Examiner today that they consulted with the GPA on this and they had no major grievances with it. Of course this may be more of a reflection on the GPA than anything else.

He also made the point that the concept is nearly already a sucess as in the interest and debate it has ignited - he made the good point that if Carlow v Laois was on the Saturday evening no one outside either county would have taken any interest in it at all.

Any word on which game will be covered by RTE on the Saturday , if any ! .
Based over on the mainland and would love to see the blue and gold v Limerick Saturday week !

Tipp did win 3 games in the qualifiers last year, without Barry Grogan, who was in the States. However, Alan Moloney was injured against Kerry, so the Tipp forward line is seriously weakened.

There was none covered in this round at all last year, suspect it'll be the same this year.
But hey, we gets to see loads of provincial quarter finals instead, games were no-one gets knocked out.

Wonder will they at least have cameras at all the games. I know a few years back when Meath played Westmeath in a round 1 qualifier, RTE never bothered to send anyone to the game and they ended up missing one of the best points you're likely to see from Joe Sheridan.

Is the Cavan Monaghan game not being shown on TV the 29th?

Provincial quarter finals are over. It's semi final stage now and I wouldn't see any of the qualifiers as worth showing tbh.

RTE have confirmed they are showing it according to hoganstand - on an aside it is being billed as El Classico on Monaghan forum :D:D

At a guess I would say this is a case of taking the BBC NI pictures thereby saving money to pay Tubs, Joe and Marian's salary

If it is the BBC NI feed expect a lot of manager & crowd shots while you hear the sounds of play going on in the background.

So loads of games on and both television stations likely to broadcast the same game.

You need the games on both channels so we can watch the match on RTE and they flick over to BBC at half time and after the game for a proper analysis of what actually happened rather than listening to Spillane and whatever sock puppet he has with him going on an embarassing rant involving cones or fabric softener.

But yeah it is a bit daft if there is an alternative game on at the same time - afaik BBC have the rights for the Ulster Championship. Does that mean RTE pay the BBC to show Ulster championship games??

this is what was wanted by the other (non ulster) provinces so its ironic that it has led to more Ulster games being shown

It was the case that RTE rotated the coverage a little more in the past opting to ignore big games involving Armagh and Tyrone in order to be fair to the other provinces so BBC covered those games in parallel.
Seeing as the game on BBC was more attractive, the other provinces THEN threw a wobbler and said that there shouldnt be any parallel games

So now theres to be no parallel games which means that for BBC to show a game live RTE must also show it, so now theres a tick more Ulster games than previously it seems.
The online showing of games was often to get round the rule that RTE must "show" the Ulster game in order to allow BBC to show it, but that is also at an end it seems.

Tyrone cruising against Offaly 7 points up to nothing after 15 minutes.

Fermanagh 1-3 Westmeath 0-3 Sounds like a serious blunder from Connaughton for the Fermanagh goal - seriously misjudged the flight of a ball and ended up in the back of the net. Westmeath did get a point back pretty much straight away after.

Commentator going on about Tyrone having 7/8 goal chances but simply taking their points.

And to think some people were saying Offaly had a chance with all the Tyrone injuries.

    Offaly have a score !!!

Offaly have used either 4/5 subs already

Tyrone have hit the post and have had 4/5 wides and have had a policy of taking points over going for goals.

    15 points to 1.

    Massacre in Tullamore.

Division 1 versus Division 4 teams continue on as a joke.

The worst performance I have seen from an Offaly football team we may be missing a load of players but still it was absolutely dreadful from us, no organisation in attack or defence continually running the ball into tackles when we are obviously not strong enough to break through them.

ye're not the only ones dingus, this is the trend when div 1 meets div 4. my own county had high hopes of a big performance against Cork after winning div 4 but the game was over after 15 mins as well.

Galway got through against Tipp after, final score 1-12 to 0-11.

What way does round 2 of the qualifiers work? Does the team entering the qualifiers having lost a provincial semi final get home advantage? Or can it go either way?

Both teams will be drawn and then there will be another draw for home advantage.

Over the next two weekends I think but could be wrong. I don't think any provincial semi final loser from this weekend will be out next weekend but Down, Roscommon, Waterford and Clare will be.

teams who get further in the provincial championship should have home advantage, but this is the GAA, they dont do common sense.

Yeah the whole system could do with tweaking. Cavan won two games out of three and yet they will enter at the same stage as Roscommon who have played and lost only one game. Westmeath actually won a game in the championship and yet they are out in round 1.

And yet Offaly gave a better account of themselves against Kildare.

    Lemlin wrote: »

    4 games next weekend.

    Cavan
    Dublin/Kildare
    Wexford/Meath
    London/Leitrim

    Won't play until July 13,14th

It would hardly be common sense to have such a rule when some teams may have 'got to the semi-finals' without actually playing a game previously, and then lost that first game in the semis.

Even if the above anomaly doesn't occur your idea still seems to be very biased in favour of Connacht and Munster teams.
e.g, Team A wins one tie in Leinster and then loses in the quarters, Team B wins one game in Munster and then loses in the semis.
One provincial victory each so theres no logical reason why Team B should auto have home advantage if they meet in R2 of the quaifiers.
