Rosy for the back pain, if you can, pilates is helping me a lot. The exercises on the ball and the stretches are a God sent as the whole body feels better after it! Did you feel back pain for the other pregnancies as well? Did you have any massage? I was thinking to give it a try.

I had a horse riding accident a few years ago and broke my sacrum and had terrible problems both with my lower back and later on with pelvic girdle pain in my second pregnancy. I found this amazing cranial osteopath (I swear he is actually a magician) and saw him regularly throughout my last pregnancy which sorted me out. I managed to get an appointment with him next week so that should sort me out (so embarrassing though- I was really tired when I rang up to make the appointment and was leaving an answerphone message and had a complete mental block half way through leaving my phone number...cringe!!). I did some active birth classes which is based on the Janet Balaskas system that is kind of like yoga and pilates and they were brilliant. Its such an amazing book ('Active Birth' by Janet Balaskas) if anyone is interested and has really clear pictures of the exercises. I have to get one of those balls again too- they're great. I had one last pregnancy that I used as a seat a lot of the time (easier to get out of than the couch!) but the kids popped it playing with it in the garden . I would like a massage but I only want to go to someone who specialises in pregnancy massage- with my history I don't want some aesthetician crippling me- and that's pricey so I'm going to wait and treat myself further along in the pregnancy and really need it.

Today it is three years we are married and a movie and a take away will be the most romantic celebration I could dream of, with little baba on its way :)

I hear you! My OH asked me if I wanted to go out for dinner and I couldn't get enthusiastic about it...my brain sort of atrophies after 8pm! Congrats on the anniversary anyhow :)

We're not finding out the sex- I like the surprise, its a nice reward at the end of all that work. I can totally see the other side of it too though. I already have two boys and a girl so its not like we're holding out for one or the other, and I think its fun guessing. All our wee baby stuff is white or cream anyway.

Dori- I hope you're feeling better and taking it easy in the sun! We had our first really hot day today and I found I couldn't sit in the direct sun for any length of time- normally I love the heat... It must be so disorientating to faint when you're out and about. Is anyone else finding they're drinking loads of water? I think I must be retaining water somewhere (my ar$e? :D) because I'm drinking about twice as much as I normally do and putting on weight fairly quickly even though I'm not eating too much (the heartburn gets me if I eat too much at a time) and mostly healthy stuff.

:( it must have been very painful. I have been told about osteopathy even in relation to reflux and there is apparently a guru in Galway, but I am in Dublin and I do not have other trusted names, but I will keep looking, considering your experience too seems to suggest it works, if in good hands.

My brain too! At a certain time, I just become a zombie. Work is also very stressful at the moment and having to be on top of it all day long, I come home with no residual energy at all!

We are not finding the sex either. I am a bit OCD and I know, I would really plan the baby's life until his/her 30th at least ;) , so we decided that it is only fair to give this baba a chance to be what he/she wants to be, as once the baby is born I will be way too busy to be my usual OCD :)

And I like the idea of being surprised, this has been the best surprise all along, so we like the idea of keeping it that way :)

I am drinking more than usual too!

Silly news, bought first baby outfit! A Sesame Street Cookie monster pj 0-3 months that says Me want cookie. So cute! For the rest, we will do the bit of basic shopping with the December sales, we should be then ready by the end of the year, in case the baba changes any plan!

    Take care :)

My sister just bought our baby his first outfit too! Its a Tasmanian Devil baby grow from heatons :)

Same here on the shopping, planning everything we want, then hitting the sales! Also asking for vouchers for Xmas as pressies. I hope to be all set by the first week in Jan but that may be wishful thinking!

Those little outfits are so cute indeed :)
Ours is mainly blue, so everyone in the family is asking: are you having a boy?? No, but we liked the little pj and I did not think for a moment it would have been too blue for a girl :)

Hubby and I are trying to understand what are the essentials, and being at our first, we have absolutely nothing.

So far we have been looking for:
    - Carrycot;
    - Pushchair/buggy
    - car seat
    - crib (we will use my family's one)
    - Cot
    - We are not sure one needs a changing station
    - baby's clothes for the hospital

And in reality, we are not looking for anything else.
We need to do some work in the boxroom (changing floor and windows), some work in the house (painting the hall and all the doors) and in reality I am not sure about anything else.

In the box room (which will be baba's room) we have plain white furniture, solid and nice ones, so I see no reason to change them. Currently they represent my wardrobe, but we will fix the wardrobe situation in the guests' room.

So, I am not really sure we should look for anything more.
Only this is, we are finding difficult to make our mind up about the carrycot systems (the 3 pieces one) as there are gorgeous ones, but madly expensives, and I cannot really justify so much money for something like that.

We found this (and we looked at it), that seems solid, light enough and pleasant to the eye, in a good price range and from a good brand, so we might go for it.

It is a Chicco Today one, and the whole lot costs around 300 euro http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=chicco+today+travel+system&FORM=HDRSC2#view=detail&id=9DDF1700304EEDAEBB46C1415E1D345772B0EA12&selectedIndex=42

But we are not sure what we should look for in a set. Space and weight, ok, but what more? Rosy might help here as I am totally clueless :)

I'd love the Stokke one, but the price tag is simply insane.

We might cross each other in the sales :)
(I am also monitoring prices in the Mamas and papas Outlet in the North, Christmas sales should make it worth it to go there)

Have a nice sunday, I am off to get myself the pregnancy pillow, or hubby will divorce if I keep using him as resting point :)

I have started writing my master list! Im trying to be super organised but as its also our first baby, we really dont know what well find useful or not.... also trying not to over spend.

    THE LIST :)
    • Moses Basket with sheets ( had no intention of buying one but getting a loan from family friend)
    • Cot bed and sheets ( gift from my mum)
    • Cot bed bumpers
    • Baby monitor
    • Changing Unit ( probably a chest of drawers)
    • Changing Mat
    • 2 x Bowls for water / cotton balls etc
    • Reusable nappies (first month from the nappy library)
    • Nappy bin and net
    • wet bags
    • bamboo wipes
    • Changing bag
    • Travel system ( gift from my dad)
    • Steriliser
    • baby blankets
    • baby clothes, sleep suits, socks, mittens
    • burp cloths
    • baby bouncer ( 2nd hand gift from friend)
    • baby bath thing of some sort maybe
    • thermometer, nail clippers
    • play mat
    • sunshade for car
    • headrest mirror for car

I can see us getting a lot of the smaller things as gifts. Playmat wasnt on the list until a few days ago, when a friend had their 4 month old over and said it was a godsend when they were visiting people, as they could lie the baby on it on the floor/sofa etc, knowing that it was clean. Also I am planning on breast feeding so there is no bottle equipment on my list.

Please feel free to add anything! I have probably forgotten something really obvious :)

Enjoy your preggie pillow! I wont have mine for 2 weeks :( - jealous!

I'm not sure I can help you with the travel system thing- we never bothered with one. We had a capsule car seat lent to us from a friend who had it new so we know it had never been in a crash; an old fashioned lie down pram with a detachable carry cot, and a sling.

For me the sling was the single most indispensable piece of equipment that we had as two of my babies were crap sleepers that would only sleep on me. It meant I could get stuff done with a wee baby asleep on my front. They're also great for being out and about in busy places- no running over people's ankles with a bulky pram and its also more secure for the baby to be right on you as opposed to floating through a sea of people.

We never had a change table before but I've just bought one second hand off the internet since my OH has had an injury that prevents him from getting down on the floor. I've also heard from friends who have had Caesareans that they're pretty essential for the first six weeks. I just got a fold away one but my friend's husband was a carpenter and he made her an amazing one that fit over the top of the cot.

The other thing that I thought was brilliant was a baby hammock, again for the poor sleepers. The one we had clipped over a door frame so you could bring it to a friends house if you were over for dinner or something and put them down there. This is the one we had:
    6074674614_7547024cca.jpg

Just curious, dori, if you're not bottle feeding at all what's the sterliser for?

I don't feel like I have a whole lot to purchase, just a few things to recall from friends that I've lent stuff out to. People are already dropping loads of stuff off that they're done with! I will have to go through the cases of stuff (ours and other peoples) and give the appropriate things a wash.

For me the biggest thing is hoping/praying/begging/cadjoling that our house will be finished on time...we're living in a building site atm. The scaffolding is being used by my 6yo as a climbing frame which puts the heart across me. I'm dreaming about paint swatches and tiles and wallpaper samples. It should be finished by Christmas but you never know with these things.

Mary, I know what you mean about the blue thing. We had the most gorgeous pair of blue dungarees in about 3month size and I used them for my little girl and everyone thought she was a boy! I don't have a problem putting my wee boys in pink but my husband doesn't like it. My two year old has long hair but he's such a bruiser and wears jeans and the like but people still think he's a girl. I would so dress my girl a lot cuter than that!!
    Bottom line, people are lazy!!

I forgot about the sling/harness! My friend is taking me to a sling meetup thing when im home. 2 friends with recent babies say they are amazing - kids fall asleep 2 min after being put in.

Hubby put the steriliser on the list. I dont think we need one, but hes thinking soothers and plastic toy things should be sterilised. i mentioned soothers in the kettle, and fairy liquid for the rest, but we will see. We have cats so he thinks we should be a little more careful, but i dont want to go ott and our babs have a crappy immune system! Thoughts?

Speaking of cats we are getting some cat nets for the buggy and cot for when baby isnt in them, when he is cats wont be allowed in the room. Might not work as Ive heard mixed reviews about them on the internet but they are cheap and worth a try to reduce cat hair. Also on the plus side - when our friends were over, one of my fluffy babies didnt even notice the baby! and wasnt bothered by the crying either. All he wanted was to sleep in the basket under the pram! The other didnt make an appearance.

We also have to buy a car when we come home, so stressful - there are too many choices! Ive only ever bought one car before and that was 8 years ago! Didnt have to think about back seat space for the child seat to fit or anything. Hubbys very tall so seat has to go right back for him to drive.

I definitely need a changing table, Ive a weak back and could do with as little bending over as possible! I love the hammock!

Good luck with the reno! I cant imagine taking that on! My head is just swimming with baby, car, moving etc. Also yesterday I was 20 weeks! Half way!

great to hear all the above. in my 21st week now and hubby thinks its way too early to buy ANYTHING for baby that its tempting fate. me, however i like to be picking things up here and there... we were in Aldi yesterday and there was sterilisers, bottles, playmats, bath seats etc etc and he was like NO NO NO! so annoying. I just wanna get organised. I do plan on breastfeeding but it may not work out so I think best to have the steriliser and some bottles on standby just in case. There is alot of things that can be done without but its so hard to know. some people tell u one thing is a definite must and others say waste of money! What to do!!!

Just on a different note altogether.... how are ye all feeling 'down there' during sex? I was fine until a week or 2 ago and now its so uncomfortable, like there is something there obstructing him.... I hear of women having sex up to full term but i am only 5 months and already its not good. will it get worse... Help!!

I also plan on breast feeding have not bought any bottles or sterilisers yet but I do plan on doing so as of when the baby goes to grandparents house they won't be able to feed the baby so il just pump it out into the bottles so they can do I then :) I'm just gone into my 21st week also and only recently have I bought some stuff as I was told also it was way to early but I just can't help myself from picking up the cute clothes or the little tiny hats and mittens :)

On that note I'm the same I got kinda turned off doing it as I was feeling very uncomfertable down there I only thaught it was just me

I couldn't have done without mine. But do try to put baby down for as many naps as you can so they get used to sleeping alone. Biggest rookie error I made!

Never sterilised anything myself, and we have a cat. My mil's best mate is a paediatrician and she said that washing your hands/things well with soap and water and drying them is way more important than sterilising and that sterilising things sometimes makes people slack on the oldfashioned washing. My attitude was once they started putting everything into their mouths then there had to be some developmental reason for it and I relaxed about it. I am strict about no outside shoes in the house with a crawling baby. As with everything tho it's about finding your own comfort level and if it makes your oh more secure...

I haven't heard of these? Are they to keep the cat out of the pram/cot? Our cat used to love sneaking into the pram for a sleep but we made it clear it wasn't for him. Lots of training pre-baby. He is a very intelligent beast all the same. Are you moving your cats from Israel?! They're not going to be happy with the Irish winter!
Also yesterday I was 20 weeks! Half way!

    Me too- exciting times!

Down there is fine but my boobs are not comfortable to be touched either which is a shame since they're becoming more impressive by the day. Even the strap of the seatbelt irritates them. I'm not looking forward to the days/weeks/months of restricted sexual positions- I'm tired enough without having to make all the effort in the bedroom too!

Ya my boobs were really sore and very tender when you touch them especially the nipples.. Ya totally not able to do all different positions ... I'm only 21 weeks and 4 days and they only put me on iron tablets as I'm just so tired all the time ..

    !

yep they are, you just tie them on to the 4 corners i think. We actually brought our 2 from Ireland to America, and then America to Israel. I dont think theyll mind the cold but one loves to sleep in the bed with me at night, and thats not gonna be happening in Ireland !( we have the tiniest bed ever in Ireland, and also prep for baby arrival)

Our 2 of course have opposite personalities - one will only sleep in one spot in each room, no changing. The other picks the closest spot to me as possible. its like having a baby already! (yeah right!)

We have water pistols that were got in xmas crackers for backup. worked really well to keep mr. clingy off the kitchen counters.

On the sex note - I have totally not been in the mood at all! My boobs are so sore that any movement of them kills my mood instantly. all my bras are underwire and digging in too, so im pretty miserable ( and so is the hubby! :) )

Im hoping to get some better/different bras in M&S or somewhere when we are home.

    THE LIST :)

    Hi Dori, Brilliant list :)

I can see us getting a lot of the smaller things as gifts. Playmat wasnt on the list until a few days ago, when a friend had their 4 month old over and said it was a godsend when they were visiting people, as they could lie the baby on it on the floor/sofa etc, knowing that it was clean. For the playmat, I agree. My friend and sister use a portable changing mat and they have also a gym/playmat to keep at home. it has a square base and two archs above it with little toys pending from it (and sometimes toys also along the perimeter of the base). My nieces and nephew spent pleasant time kicking and trying to grasp the toys on tem :)

I plan on breastfeeding as well, but, since I al also doing a master (parallel to work) I will need to be able to go to classes and work experiences. For this reason, I would like for hubby to be able to feed the baby with my milk even if I am not there, so bottles will be essential to freeze and give the milk to the little one.
    [/QUOTE]

Enjoy your preggie pillow! I wont have mine for 2 weeks :( - jealous!

My pain got quite unbearable in the pelvic area and the lower back> I had a visit this morning in the hospital and the I have been told that I have a round ligament syndrome. Which explains why I was cringing in pain at every step.

I am in bed now, but every movement is really painful beyond expectations. I am lucky I can work from home for few days and see how it goes, but it is exhausting. The good thing is that: 1. now I know what it is; 2. it should be gone by week 24 and today we are 21W4D so we are nearly there :)

I still cannot feel the baby moving, but we had a scan today and the little cute was kicking and punching at the doctor pressing the belly to get good picture. Not feeling the baby, each scan is very emotional as it makes it more real. And all the pain become worth it :)

So, we are now just over 4 month away, yeppeeeeee :)
    Hope you all feel great!

Im hoping to get some better/different bras in M&S or somewhere when we are home.

M&S are the best one, in my opinion. That's the first thing I had to buy in the pregnancy as all my bras were underwired too, but I started to find marks on the flesh for the pressure of them (the boobs were betting bigger during the day).

I have bought initially one M&S and ones Dunnes to try, but the Dunnes was not great, to be honest. So, while I was up the North, I bought other 4 M&S total support ones and I have to admit that they are really comfy.

I miss my underwear that was quite pretty, but these are acceptable and some are even nice. The panties are all another story though. They are and look awful, but again, they are comfy and so I am going on with them.

One thing, I had to change all panties to cotton ones as my skin became too sensitive.

About the sex, I do not have any specific pain (now is off the table with this ligament thing, but until now it has been ok), except that we had to change routines already and I am getting tired pretty much soon

clareames, I am not incline to buy not for superstition r anything, but a experience as an aunt. For my brother I have planned plenty of things, but when the baby was born, he was tiny baby size, whilst all summer clother I bought for him were 0-3 months. By the time he grew enough to fill them, it was Christmas and it was too cold to even use them. So, this time, I am going to buy the very minimal to get by with at the hospital and then, as Dori and Rosy said, I am sure I will get so much from family and friends that it should be enough for the first few days until I can then go and buy more things myself.

On another note, it is true that there are pregnancies that do not end as hoped/expected and in those cases being surrounded by things one has prepared for the baby must be very hard. That is also the reason why I plan to do it as late as possible/acceptable/sensible (except the cookie monster outfit :)

We plan to do the shopping at the end of December, so by then we should also have a slight idea of the baby's size.

Rosy: good luck with the works in the house. I was going mad last year and we had only a puppy dog to manage, I cannot even begin to imagine the stress and concerns with you pregnant and the children around! We'll keep everything crossed from here :)

On the bras...if you really want to treat yourself there's an amazing Aussie brand called Cake. They're pricey but a) they're beautiful, b) they give a lovely shape, c) they're incredibly comfy and are lined with 100% cotton, and d) they last better than any other ones I've had- M&S or topshop didn't get through an entire pregnancy and a years breastfeeding, Elle McPhearson was knackered by the second baby, but these are going strong. They have halfway decent sales online and they sell them in Cupcake in Ranelagh.

Me too I couldn't even stick the smell of chocolate and it would just turn my stomach now I'm wanting it.. I was a mad chocoholic before pregnancy

I'm really into meat at the moment which is not normal for me- I was veggie for years and usually don't eat much meat. I'm also loving marmite and avocados, and peanut butter (not all together, the peanut butter is separate!). I've decided to quit sugar for this pregnancy as I have a strong family history of diabetes and my last baby was quite big so its a risk for me. It was really hard the first week but now its fine.

After the first four months of really bad nausea for anything but carbs, I am back to full appetite, with preference for carbs...which is no good :(

For the rest, I am completely off salmon (just seeing raw salmon turns my stomach) and I love watery fruit (but I always did, so it is not unusual).

Only thing, I am loving cotrtage pies and basic foods!

So, so far so good, kind of :)

Yes! I've been buying sneaky out of season melons, grapes, passion fruits, and kiwi fruits are a staple as always...ruinously expensive in NZ but I figure I'm saving the money on wine :D

Yes! I've been buying sneaky out of season melons, grapes, passion fruits, and kiwi fruits are a staple as always...ruinously expensive in NZ but I figure I'm saving the money on wine :D

I cant get enough apples or kiwis! Cant wait to have some satsumas when were home :)

We were out to dinner last night and I had a sneaky glass of wine  Part of me wishes it had been a terrible wine, but it was gorgeous and I could have drunk the whole bottle. Now all I want is wine again - dammit! back to cold turkey for me :)

I had about a five week window where I could enjoy the odd glass of wine- before that it made me want to vomit, now it gives me heartburn...it's probably a good thing...

We are heading out again tonight with friends for a farewell dinner. I know Ill want some wine again :( The last 2 weeks with all the stresses of moving, all Ive wanted is a vodka (or 5) :D

And it sucks for the hubby, cos usually we swap the drinking/driving responsibilities, but Im not safe to drive even sober at night cos Im so tired I could fall asleep at the wheel! So we are 2 sober people in a crowd of tipsy friends all the time :(

Nuts are really healthy to eat during pregnancy! I was told the same as you but after some research it seems that only if you or your OH have some kind of nut allergy that its a good idea to avoid but otherwise its fine, and any allergy they might have is pretty unforeseeable. There are loads of random things Irish people told me that after research are just ridiculous. I go by the 'avoid anything raw or unpasteurised' rule and thats it. and try and control my tuna intake.

    :)

Never heard not to eat nuts before- I thought they were a good healthy snack- great for energy and protein. I think if you followed all the recommended advice of different people you'd lie flat on your back and be fed through a tube for nine months! None of my kids have any allergies and I gorged on nuts in all of my pregnancies. I even used to make them almond milk to make their porridge when they were on solids but before they were ready for cows milk. I think dori's right, if you have a family history of something or other you should be careful but otherwise don't stress yourself...eat the snickers!!
