Picked up my 50mm lens this morning.. so will give that a test drive this evening.

Those prime lenses are great. You will probably have it left on the camera most of the time.

Guys dont forget to check out the photography forum on here and post some shots in the random photos thread.

Also, people asking about bags, I dont have this camera but probably a similar sized Nikon and I bought a Lowepro Slingshot 102aw for it and couldnt be happier with it. Its £50 sterling on amazon. Have a look at it on Youtube.:)

I`m still a beginner btw, only two months into owning a DSLR so my advice is coming from the perspective of a relative noob.:)

I got my shipped notification as well this morning, all excited now, going to have to start looking up all the photo stuff, this is my first time using Parcel Motel as well, very very handy.

basq. how long did the camera take to arrive in sligo from canon and pm.

mine shipped today but my pm in Dublin and I'm in achill. would it make it to castlebar by the weekend if I changed it now. it shipped thus morning.
    thx
Got notification of shipment from Canon at 8.30am last Wednesday morning (it'll have tracking info on it), signed for in PM in Antrim on Thursday afternoon, and delivered to my local ParcelMotel at 1am on Thursday night / Friday morning.

If it'd to hazard a guess from that, it'll probably in your local ParcelMotel late tomorrow night / early Thursday morning.

Give them a call (1890 24 17 17) and ask their advice maybe.

I'd say it shouldn't be a problem to change it now as it shouldn't be with them til tomorrow, and probably won't leave their depot til close of business tomorrow.

will stay in my box indefinitely with a 3.50 charge per 48 hours. no point changing it. thanks for your help....is there anything you can do about the weather? it's cloudy here in achil:(
you'll find some photos I took with my 1100d last year on dublinphotographyonline.com

True enough.. if it even arrives late tomorrow night / early Thursday morning, you'll be grand collecting it on Friday evening.

Worse happens, am sure a friend or family member could collect it for you in your PM in Dublin.

PS - Cloudy in Achill? Can't do miracles! :( To quote Crowded House, I tend to take the weather with me - typically miserable god-awful weather!

Got my dispatch notification this morning too. Luckily I'm living 5 mins walking distance from my Parcel Motel (Dublin 1). I'm hoping to have it by Friday. Any earlier will be great :)

When I tried to get this I added a UK address as requested (the parcel motel one) but it also requests a phone number & it won't accept my own ROI number?? Anyone else get this?

I got the notice as well this morning, I'm hoping to have it on Thursday along with all the stuff I bought on Amazon for it, then spend the evening & Friday setting it up and then go walking with the Clarebaby on Saturday to take loads of loads of pictures :D

6 left of this one. It's a seller referb and not a manufacturer one. Not sure what the difference is between those.

Found this bag on Amazon which is pretty highly rated for only £15. Gonna add a good quality SD card and maybe one or two lenses that were mentioned a while back. Should qualify for free delivery.

Broke out the 50mm lens this evening.. lovely lens, but definitely not ideal for indoor shots as it's far too "tight".

As you'll see, the 18mm - 55mm lens kit is very adjustable... that's pretty much in the name though (18mm - 55mm).

I'd say the 50mm has some truly superb range for outdoor shots but for close-up's, it's definitely too tight.

Will be keeping both in my case in the near future methinks... actually, still need to pick up a case!

Took about 5 - 12 indoor shots and this is the only one that's salvageable.. and even then, it's far from perfect.

Just checked the track and trace and my parcel was signed for at the Parcel Motel address at around 11.30am. So it's in their hands now. Hopefully be here in the next 48 hours.

You should have it tomorrow morning. Mine arrive at parcel motel yesterday and woke up to a text saying that I can pick it up.
It's my first time using parcel motel but it seems to be a great service (assuming everything is in order when I pick it up this evening)

First time using it myself, handy getting the two free deliverys too. Seems straightforward though. Very quick shipping if you got it within 24 hours.

It's a superb service.. have used it twice alone in the past fortnight.

Picked mine up this morning and am very impressed with it. It looks brand new, I'm not sure if it is "refurbished" at all. People were saying the same on HUKD.

Thanks again Basq, especially on the adding the parcel motel address to Paypal/ebay as that had flummoxed me in the past! Great bargain. Can't wait to use it this afternoon.

It's a bargain alert on Boards too. Check the second page of BA and it's still there.

Just noticed on HUKD that you can get it new for £230 + €3.50 from Dabs with code PAYPAL20 and it comes with a free 16GB SD card. Not a competing offer by any means but might be useful for anyone who was planning on getting it as a gift and didn't want to risk it not looking 100% (even though it seems to be every time!). Everywhere else seems to be about £250 without the SD card.

Was just checking out my Parcel Motel account. Nice little touch - they take a quick photo of your package and make it available on your account page. Great idea IMO.

Hadn't needed PM before this deal but it's a great service and hope it lasts.

Ordered this bag from Amazon. It is a compact bag which is what I wanted. Cheapest it has been according to camelcamelcamel. Very well reviewed on Amazon.com too. Worked out at £8.71 including the Irish vat.

Slightly off topic but they have the 550D up now for £300. Been sitting in my amazon wishlist for a long time. Would have been very tempted if I had not ordered the 1100D.

Got txt from PM an hour ago as I was driving by the pick up location so collected it - only ordered it Fri night. Superb service.

Beautiful looking camera and not a scratch on it to be seen. But it's going to take a serious amount of practice to master this- looks fierce complicated.

Now to get the essential accessories...thanks to all for the heads up on this

To get a basic start with it (til you read up on it) - put the mode to AV (aperture priority) and make sure lens-switch is in AF (auto-focus) and you just take 20 - 30 shots around the place. Then switch back to MF (manual-focus) on lens, and try some manual focusing on various items close-up.

When you're fully read up or feeling adventurous, you can put the mode to M (manual) playing around with ISO, aperture (f-stop) etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,060 ✭✭✭Kenny Logins

I wouldn't bother with manual focus. Single point (centre) auto will do you for almost everything.

How do the model numbers work on Canon cameras?

Is it anything logical like the higher/lower the number, the better the camera? Is the 500D better or worse than this 1100D?

the 1100d is entry level. everything else is better.

Seems pretty random to me. I think the only main indicator is the price range. That's the best way to differentiate between them. Canons site does a good job at separating them into sections. Made things easier seeing it laid out like that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,208 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

Thanks , but is there a series?

i.e. is the 500D better than the 600D, which is better than the 700D?

700 better than 600 better than 500,but then you have the 5d and 7d:).

its easier to look at the price range.

    No, it's not random. :D

    Starting with the entry level;

    XXXX
    XXX
    XX
    X

up to pro. Numbers in each band increase with every new model (450 > 500 > 550 > 600 and so on)

No idea about the 100D though... :pac:

That lens is currently £163 direct from Amazon so I would say you got the bargain of the thread Inquitus! No mention of it at all on the description either.

Edit - The kit that you got has come up for sale a couple of times at a whopping £330  http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Canon-EOS-1100D-Digital-SLR-Camera-18-55mm-and-75-300mm-DC-Lens-Refurbished-/290757662933?clk_rvr_id=494965004573

Indeed... I'd be half tempted to pick that up on Ebay, and sell on the second 1100D.

EDIT: Never mind.. listing appears to have ended.

It will be interesting to see if it was a fluke for Inquitus or if all those who ordered the more expensive one got the extra lens too! (Have to admit that I will be more than a little jealous if they do:o)
