Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Just throwing it out there. Relative looking for a new car.

    Post 08
    Small enough tax (sub 400)
Possibly diesel but an economical 110hp upwards petrol would do
Not a focus, 308,C4,i30, ceed or auris or octavia
Not a 1.6 HDI or 1.5 dCi engine
    Max €9000

    Focus size upwards.

    Ceed/i30

Thing is, removing the HDI and DCI really limits the choices.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,478 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

Yes, it's quite the head scratcher. There has to be an answer though.

Ceed and i30 out of the equation, mother has a top spec i30 already, so comparisons would be drawn.

Seat Leon in petrol or diesel.

I'd steer away from the Golf itself as it will carry a premium over the Leon.

Octavia is bland for what you'll afford.

Alfa 147 JTD or maybe even an Astra?

    What happened the Civic?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,865 ✭✭✭✭MuppetCheck

Leon 1.4tsi, Sport plus is the spec to go for. Make sure it has electric rear windows as if it doesn't it loses out on folding mirrors too. They tinkered with the spec slightly towards the end of the pre facelift model.

    What happened the Civic?

I still have it, new car isn't for me.

Have suggested the Leon earlier today alright, which went down ok.

Did they improve the interior at some stage?

Didn't read the relative bit. The car enthusiast in me skipped straight to the restrictions

The interior was a bit cheap away from the dash but the stuff you touch is good, nicest steering wheel I've ever had. And it's actually well screwed together and wears well. I'd have no issue with another one, just make sure they stick to 16 inch wheels. It gets a bit too crashy otherwise.

Yep, they aren't the usual 16s they came with but very similar. Original Seat wheels either way.

Keep an eye out for one with the larger display in the instrument cluster too, means factory bluetooth and more menu options.

    Any more ideas?

Left field but what about a Saab 93 saloon or estate. Value to be had

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,728 ✭✭✭George Dalton

1.8 Civic? €390 tax and good on fuel.

I already have one, so that kinda rules him out of buying one.

The interior rattles would drive you demented. This review is spot on. Only 12,000 km on the odometer and he was hearing them. Very common issue.

He also mentioned the hard sports suspension. Spot on again! Way too harsh. Only fix is the Hirsh upgrade, which is effectively the Eibach Prokit and Bilstein B8's. Just done this to my 9-3, and it lowers the car by another 10 mm (already lowered by 20 mm) and it's a great setup. Brilliant.

Must get to work on the rattles next - some members on the Saab forums have stripped nearly all interior panels and put foam in. It's nearly a project car at this stage.

A better option would be to get a non-sports suspension version like the Liner, but still I wouldn't bother. Better cars out there.

I'm not sure about the 122bhp but the twin-charged versions can make some pretty impressive numbers when mapped alright.

Unfortunately they can also make some pretty impressive repair bills :pac:

    Left field choice...

    View2-20547751.jpeg

    - 2009
    - Great diesel engine
    - Cheap tax and good MPG ( high forties)
    - Nice interior and lovely to look at
    - Rare and different from the mainstream yokes.

    Well under budget too.

By left field I meant a diesel Alfa as opposed to the proper petrol one....:D

In all seriousness it does fit the criteria and it's over €2k under budget before haggling, and it's so much nicer than a Kia C'eed IMO...

I was just talking to him and he wouldn't mind getting a civic like mine. Problem is all the nice ones are black. Same colour and same car def not a runner.

Can't find many 1.8 ES (has to be ES for emissions) models about. Few in the uk but most are black or massive mileage.

Still though, any suggestions really welcome.

The only thing I would say about that particular Alfa is it looks a bit rough, no mention of mileage. Is it possibly a trade sale?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,478 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

He likes Alfas, just not non-bangeromics ones

Random but a Fiat Bravo if you can find a non rental one?

    Mazda 3 1.6 petrol.

Wouldn't touch the Volvo. Cousin of mine and a friend both had them and they ran into expensive problems as the mileage got higher.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,617 ✭✭✭ba_barabus

    HDI aren't they?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,792 ✭✭✭Ded_Zebra

I know this particular one is over budget but a cheeper one will come up. IMO a very nice car. Mammy had a 2008 one from 2009 until this year, not one thing ever went wrong with is ever, averaged 5.2l/100km and good to drive. Not very refined though as modern diesels go though.

Yep, I don't think he's seen one in the flesh, so I think it'll be an issue

I reckon he'd get a Leon if not for that.

Not too many golf tsi's around in budget so golf is out too.

2.0 is a Ford engine I thought. Supposed to be far more reliable than the 1.6 and much punchier too.

LM which engines were in your cousins cars?

May as well say he doesn't like the mondeo either
