Nice race in Galway. more or less the same pace as the 4 Mile last month so that at least shows a little bit of progress.

Good week, first few days was about recovery from the race. Missed the club session on Thursday so did my own thing around UCD. it was incredibly difficult :)

Corkagh Parkrun #100 on Saturday, good effort but still running around 24-25 mins each week.

12 Miles on Sunday was a bit of a struggle even though I'd found it ok the previous week, doing the same distance!

Good week. Started with session on Tuesday evening. A bit faster than last time I did this session but still only did 6, instead of 8 which was on offer.

Thursday, wasn't going to do a session but did the fartlek, 1 min on/1 min off. Ended up being 11 reps.

Saturday I went to Bushy Park run. Good fun as usual. I ran 23.59 by my watch, but of course the official results have as 24:00.

Today I went from Thomastown to Inistioge, Co. Kilkenny. Nice part of the world but I found large sections to be not great for running on. Was also a bit further than I expected but was good fun nonetheless.

Haven't updated these since last April :(

Starting to see some more consistency in the runs which is good. The last year or so doesn't make for pretty reading though.

Club Session on Tuesday, 2K repeats. I managed 3, 7:14 m/m, 7:19 and 7:29. I ended up between groups a little bit and found it tough going particularly on the last one, but the pace is good given it is on grass and overall it was a good session.

Some easy runs the rest of the week until Saturday. parkrun started out slow, then steady and eventually picked it up to a decent effort, 8:28/7:40/7:57.

Sunday long run got postponed until near 7pm. i had planned between 1 and 15 miles depending on how my body was feeling. I like running at this time and felt pretty good up until mile 12 or 13 so pushed on through for the 15 Miles. It was pitch dark for the last 2 though.

Just updating for September, 2 races + 3 parkruns. Started off quite well but after 10K on Sept 7th and a long run the next day I had a bit of a flareup so dialed back the volume significantly and am now getting back up around 40MPW.

I also had a good run in the Rathfarnhma 5k, running 22.14 which was a pleasant surprise.

plugging away since then but no major races on the horizon for the next few weeks.

Your stringing some decent training in going by Strava A, great to see for you.

Fairly slow progress though. I'm still not close to the fitness I had 18 moths ago, but steadily making progress. Trying to keep consistent without doing too much, but of a balancing act i guess.

    Consistent being the important thing.

Happy Halloween, must get back to logging. Very consistent this month, solid 2 sessions a week and a 10 mile long run each week.

No races, but I've a few lined up for November.

    Week ending Sept 8th:

    IFsm39R.png

This week had a Tuesday session grass of 4 x 1 Mile. Easy Running the rest of the week and the The Lakes 10K on Saturday. I then had a long run of 10 Miles on the Sunday.

The session was fine, paces between 7:20 and 7:50, but good session. The race wasn't great, maybe I had unrealistic expectations but I was fairly disappointed in the result. The run on the Sunday was tough and I had a bit of an injury flare up with the hip and the back, I knew it was a bit of a setback so I was in for a few days off or lower volume for a while. (Also the end of any thoughts of running DCM)

    Week ending Sept 15th:

    IFsmoAc.png

Not much to report the following week apart from a decent effort at a parkrun on the Saturday and a short run on the Sunday.

    Week ending Sept 22nd:

    IFsmGs4.png

Back to a full week after that. Tuesday session of 3 x 2K and a parkrun on the Saturday. Pace on the session was 7:20-7:40 which i was happy with. The Parkrun was a little faster too.

I wasn't feeling the love for a long run so cut it short after 3 miles. Part Hangover, part niggle and part motivation related :)

    Week ending Sept 29th:

    IFsmR7L.png

The next week had 2 sessions and a race. Session 6 x 600m on Tuesday and a 40 min tempo on the Thursday. The 600's were good, in the range of 7:00 - 7:20 m/m. The tempo was more of a struggle on a very wet night and came out at around 8:44 which wasn't great to be fair!

The race went well (Rathfarnham 5k). Expecting around 24 mins and came in at 22:19 or so. Started out conservatively and picked it up as the race went on. Pleasantly surprised.

    Week ending Oct 6th:

    IFsn2Nn.png

The following week I did 2 sessions and a parkrun. The Tuesday was more of a steady run than a full session, Thursday I had 2 Terenure laps, so around 5 miles, paces were 7:50/8:23 so decent enough pace compared to the week before.

    Week ending Oct 13th:

    IFsneRt.png

The next week I had 2 sessions and a parkrun again. Session was 4 x 1 mile (or a little bit less). Pace around 7:30ish.

Second session was 1 min On/1 min off.

    Week ending Oct 20th:

    IFsnoDO.png

Hills & Sprints session, good blowout I guess. 5 Mile Tempo on Thursday (8:38/8:12/8:01/7:53/8:25) No looking at the watch!

    Week ending Oct 27th:

    IFsnAsL.png

Marathon week, so I got the longrun in on Saturday. Also manged another 2 club sessions. First was 600/400 x 4 (Pace around 6:30 on the 400 and 7:00 on the 600m). Second one was a short tempo (2.5 Miles @ 7:47) and some 200m sprints.

    Week ending Nov 3rd:

    IFsnKCe.png

4 x 1 Mile again on Tuesday, this time paces were around 7:15-7:25, so a bit quicker. The Thursday was 1 min on/1 min off again. On Saturday i had a parkrun that was a bit faster than usual (23:15) but still well short of what I would have been hoping for by now.

That's us caught up, hopefully keep it updated a bit better from here.

    Monday - Easy run @ 9:29

    Tuesday - Session - 4 x Mt. Carmel Lap

The Lap is around 0.8 miles. It starts with a stiff uphill then a gradual drop then a flat finish section. 90 seconds recovery, then go again. My paces were: 7:12/7:18/7:20/7:16. Happy enough with that.

    Wednesday - Easy Run @ 9:31

    Thursday Session - 15 x 1 min On/1 Min Off

Standard Thursday session, didn't go too hard on it but it was a good effort nonetheless!

    Friday - Off

    Saturday - Tymon Parkrun

Almost missed the start doing the warmup, technically I did miss the start but got going towrds the back of the pack. Tried to keep it steady/tempo sort of effort but was working fairly hard by the second lap. Finish time was 24.40. With W/U and C/D I had 6.4 miles.

    Sunday - Long Run.

12 Miles around the hills of the waterworks in preparation for the hills of Lanzarote in 2 weeks time. I found it hard but manageable!

Total for week of 41.9 Miles.

    Poor enough week this week.

Monday - Rest. I had intended on running but I got a work call when I wanted to run and then it was too late as I had to get to bed in order to get up at 1am to watch the 49ers lose to the Seahawks.

Tuesday - Session. Hills and Sprints, 8 hills and 8 sprints, of around 800m each. Good session, somewhat enjoyable.
Wednesday- Easy run. 6.1 miles at 9:02 m/m
Thursday - Session, Tempo run, 5.7 Miles @ 7:43. Pace on these tempo runs seem to be getting faster which is a good sign!
Friday - No run, I'd been feeling a bit sick so decided to give it a miss.
Saturday - Same, skipped the parkrun and just decided it would be better to rest up.
    Sunday - Same. No running.

17.7 Miles for the week. No harm in a week like this every so often I guess.

I'll be taking it easy this week again with 4 races  planned for next week in Lanzarote!

    Monday - 5.4 Miles @ 8:57
    Tuesday - Club Session - 4 x Bank Lap
    Wednesday - Off
    Thursday - Off
    Friday - Off
    Saturday - Off

Sickness flared up again after the session on Tuesday so took a few days off.

    Sunday - 10K Race @ 8:09
    Monday 13K Race @ 8:36
    Tuesday - 5K Beach Race @ 8:59
    Wednesday 21K Race @ 9:13

4 races back to back. Good fun as always and nice to complete all four this year. Times are nothing to write home about but I was fairly wiped out by the time the last race rolled around!

    Thursday - Off
    Friday - Off
    Saturday - Off
    Sunday - Off

    Recovery!

Not sure how to pick this up again but quick summary I guess is the best way..Doesn't make for great reading.

December - Not much. I had some things to work through after being sick and a few niggles. I was away on holidays for a few weeks where I ran once and then a few parkruns when I got back but very little in total - 26.6 Miles.

January - A little bit more training, entered Raheny and the Dublin masters XC. Neither went all that well but I thought they would help me regian my fitness, such as it is (or was). Back doing a few easy runs every week along with a club session and a few parkruns. Total - 105.9 Miles. 2 Races, 7 Sessions.

February - Started the month with the John Treacy 10 Mile, went about as well as could be expected. I thought I'd manage 90 mins comfotably enough but in the end I missed that target and couldn't manage to hold 9 min miles for the duration. The followng week I had some calf issues again, so backed off a bit. Scaled back to running 3-4 times per week. Total 82.6 Miles.

March - Continued to build through mainly easy runs and aiming for 5 runs per week. Things gradually getting easier and building up the long run from 7 miles up towards 10 miles. Got sick around St. Patricks day and had an enforced 8 day break. After that I felt like I was starting from zero again, runs were very slow and never felt easy, I was often unable to maintain even a jogging pace for more than a few miles without stopping. Total 84.3 Miles

April - Continued with just easy runs to try and regain fitness but it was a very slow process. 4 and 5 mile runs mainly and not really able for any more than that. Eventually started introducing sessions but found them very difficult. No long runs at all really. Managed the 5K time trial towards the end of the month. Total: 93.8 Miles.

May - Still running 5-6 times per week, trying to do a faster run 1-2 times per week but still keeping runs short, to around 5-ish miles for the most part. Tried a 7 miler on Sunday as a long run and felt like a proper long run and wiped me out for the most part. Hopefully maintain the consistency of regular running and hopefully some fitness will eventually follow.

Sounds like something definitely holding you back, A. Especially with the low mileage you should at least be feeling a bit fresher than that sounds.

+1 to this, was thinking the exact same myself.

I've had a blood test to check iron levels but not heard anything back yet, maybe that will show up something.

Yes, there are days when I go out and even to run 10 min miles is not manageable, possibly not being rested enough from the previous day or something but there definately seems to be something wrong alright.

    Monday - Rest

    Tuesday

    AM - Strength Session -
    https://www.runnersworld.com/training/a28439606/dumbbell-workout/

Open to suggestions on a better workout but the way I look at it doing something is better than doing nothing.

    PM - 5.5 Miles @ 9:35 m/m

Too fast, paid for it and needed to stop a couple of times, pretty hot too.

Definitely nothing wrong with that routine touches bases on most area's for a runners needs. Just remember to focus on contracting the muscles you are looking to use and engage them before you start each rep to get the most out of the exercises (rather than simply going through the motions and not getting the benefit your effort deserves)

Thanks, I found them all to be pretty good, I could probably use more weight on the deadlift. The renegade Row I found pretty difficult to be honest!

    Wednesday - 5 Miles @ 10:00 m/m

Still struggling with these runs, trying to keep it super slow but they all feel really hard. I'm not sure whats going on but nothing is feeling particularly easy at the moment.

    Thanks :)

I guess I should try to schedule more rest/recovery days as the usual strategy of running easy is not leaving me ready to run hard the next day

Why are you running hard at all if you’re not ready for it? Does all types of exercise have the same effect on you?

I don't know really. I'm not sure I'm not ready for it, at some point I'll have to do some faster running if I want to get fitter.

I spent long enough doing easy runs so I feel I should be able to do 1-2 sessions per week.

I don't really do much other exercise to be honest but I'd imagine it would be much the same.

    Thursday - Rest

    Friday - 5.38 Miles @ 10:10 m/m

This was better. Slowed it right down and was determined to keep the HR in the right sort of area. The days rest may have helped as well as the fact that it wasn't as hot. It was windy though!

    Saturday

    AM - Tempo - 1 Mile Easy/5Km Hard/1 Mile Easy

Windy as all hell and using the same route as the 5KM TT a few weeks back. Effort was hard but the time was 1 min slower than last time.(27:28)

    PM - Strength Session

    Sunday

    3 Miles @ 10:18 m/m

I had intended on doing around 7 miles but the body was in rag order to changed to a short recovery run before too long.

Just 24 Miles for the week.

    Monday - Rest

    Tuesday

    AM - Strength Session

Same session as last Tuesday but with heavier weights for the deadlift (which is 6KG per dumbbell) and 3.5KG per dumbbell for everything else.

    PM - 4 x 1,000m

This session was on the plan last week but never got around to it. It seems a bit counter intuitive going from 4 x 1500m the week before to 4 x 1000m this week, so I was thinking of adding a 5th KM to the session but thought better of it in the end.

Pace wise, every rep was slower than the one before, so probably not much sense in flogging myself for another one. Reps were (in m/m):

    7:55/7:56/8:10/8:18

All done on the grass at a very busy Bushy Park.
