The premier league are looking for ISP to block stream site in the UK like the have done with pirate bay

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-23004880

    I read this earlier today...

It's the start of censorship of the internet...

    Not good

Lets be honest here, we are just pissed off that free football might be under threat from the people who pay billions to own the rights.

    HOW DARE THEY!

If it's as easy to get around as the torrent site ban it won't be a problem. Of course I think you should be legal and above board and pay the very reasonable price for sky sports.

A new site will just start up somewhere. They can't stop the tide.

There's no going back. There'll always be streaming sites that you can pay your few quid to every month and view the games. First Row and other free streaming sites are shite anyway.

Football on TV and online? What is this barstoolery!?!? Why... I'm an LOI fan and everyone else should be too!!!*

Actually AM an LOI fan.... the 'everybody else should be' part is tongue in cheek.... kinda.

    Proxies are free.
    VPNs cost f*ck all.
Subscriptions to private streaming sites are the same.

You can't censor the internet. There will always be a way. They should realise that and instead of fighting online streaming, do it themselves, in HD, at a reasonable price and not be greedy c*nts.

So, let me get this right, they are definitely blocking the downloading of movies and music illegally, they are talking about blocking streaming of sports events .... So that must mean kiddie porn is a thing of the past right, cos surely thats the first thing you'd go to block?!?

They force a lot of people into it though. If liverpool are playing at 3pm on a Saturday then I can't watch it live anywhere, I'm forced to watch it illegally. It's a joke this day and age there is no option to buy a season ticket of some kind.

I'd say firstrow have changed their address about 3 or 4 times in the last year. Shutting them down has obviously been tried already and it has failed, and if it does succeed in shutting firstrow down, 10 new sites will spring up. It's not going to work so they may as well give up.

Also, I'm one of the users who actually does pay for Sky Sports (and I had ESPN with it in that deal they did last summer, and have Setanta which I tried to cancel but there was a year on it left). The only reason I use it is for a) 3pm games not on TV, b) Games not on UK TV at all or else if someone else wants to watch something. Not everyone who uses these sites is trying to "defraud the Premier League"

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 7,941 Mod ✭✭✭✭Yakult

Pay per game. I'm not gonna pay for Sky Sports, when I'll only watch my team play once a week. The rest does not interest me.

40 pounds? Should be at least 150 pounds. It's 38 games.

Aye, £150 is still only the price of 4 or 5 match tickets at ''reasonably'' priced clubs, or closer to 2 or 3 match tickets at the more expensive clubs.

The main reason the Premier League and teams in the league don't want to throw on a subscription service is because they fear it would affect attendances (hence why Americans and Australians for example get a brilliant TV service of Premier League), and in fairness they're right.

yup thats the death of the english premier league right there.

Its obviously the best league in the world when fans of it choose to only watch their team and noone else.

A few clicks and a bit of knowledge, that you will pick up, and you can continue to download music and watch streams for free.

I can't believe how slow companies are to respond to the internet. The amount of companies going down the tubes 'cause of their lack of initiative. Look at Netflix as a contrast. HD tv shows at a reasonable price and people have no problem paying for the service.

It costs nothing to reproduce movies, songs or streams yet social networks, like facebook ans twitter, social media, like youtube, and even the likes of pornography can be billion dollar industries while remaining "free" in monetary terms!

Im with eircom and I simply edited my hosts file the day they blocked thePirateBay and I'll do the same with plenty of other sites but that's not the issue. The issue is the high court here recenty is forcing ISPs to block websites (well just one so far!) that have never been found guilty of anything in this country and if they can do that with firstrow or tpb they can do it with ANY site they chose to. This is an issue of people being innocent until proven guilty.

The RoI is a separate country. Why can't we have what the Australians or Americans get, at least via the internet? Sky should have never been given the license to broadcast here. I could be wrong, but wasn't it the "Sky for floodlights" deal for the LoI grounds done with the FAI that allowed them in?

I know it would never have been practical to prevent people viewing Sky Sports here due the UK being next door, Ireland being able to get UK satellite transmissions etc, but I think we could have got a way better deal than we have now.

Im pretty sure the NHL does something similar.

My bro-in-law pays a couple of bucks a year and he gets access to loads of features

    https://gamecenter.nhl.com/nhlgc/secure/gclsignup

I think he paid $50 for the full 2012/2013 season. For that he gets live "out of market" games i.e. games that aren't on tv, he can watch all of this seasons games on reply, classic games and loads of other stuff. There's a video in the link.

Best thing is that you pay the fee once and you can watch it across any platform you want, Smartphone, Console, PC, Apple piece of sh*t, anything.

    Handy out

As others have said the problem for me isn't paying, I have a full sky sports pack and wouldn't be without it as I watch loads of soccer, golf etc. the problem is I cannot watch all the non-televised Liverpool games without a stream or going to a pub with one of the European satellite packages of which there are very few.

The best thing about the NFL service is the ability to watch games when you want to. I can pop onto gamepass whenever I want and watch any game from the past 4-5 years. Really makes the off season so much easier and then throw in the access to NFL network and for the price it really is a great service.

It's worth every penny and would be an amazing service if available for the premier league. Even if games were blacked out during the game that would avoid the problem of people not going to games. A similar system works in the NFL where games are blacked out if the stadium doesn't sell out. Of course there's ways around it for the broadcasters if games don't sell out - buy in bulk all the remaining tickets.

That way, games still sell out so lots of full stadiums and secondly the premier league are in control of their own revenue streams. And that's before you start looking at the benefits for the fans who can't otherwise see their team play.
I think the NFL service works out at around 8 quid a week so a price of around 250-300 would be a fair price for the product received and of course it could be cheaper if you only choose to follow your own team, say 150 quid.

At the end of the day some people are going to try to watch free streams and will find ways around it but offer the service where there clearly is a demand and people will use it. If people are willing to pay to join private streaming sites they'll be willing to pay for a superior streaming service if it is made available to them.

that kind of service is already available outside the UK, the PL sells the rights to all 380 games to other territories

e.g the US, Sweden/nordic countries to name some & across the middle east for $35 a season, not sure how much it costs in the others

all accessible enough, if you really want...

Not sure if this has been mentioned, but Sky TV in NZ have recently been outbid for their rights to the EPL to a start up sports TV outfit that will make every game available via streaming for $150 a year. Also with the availability to stream 4 matches at once and probably some more features that haven't been announced as yet.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,802 ✭✭✭✭kippy

Ultimately, the law is now strongly on the side of the rights holder. This has been facilitated largely in the past 12 months and is still moving towards them. This means that the rights holders will be able to shutdown existingband new services far faster. It is the end of illegal streaming for the masses to an extent. Sky and others seem intent on paying more and more for the pl product and this investment will be protected. The pl or sky have no interest in a pay per club scenario for numerous reasons.

Streaming site FirstRow Sports has been handed a High Court injunction to stop it providing web access to live streams of football matches for free.
According to a judge, the orders were justified as the operators of the "very popular" website were making millions of pounds from copyright infringement.

I pay for sky sports, but I probably won't pay extra for the new BT channel (are details even available for that here yet?). I also subscribe to the Egyptian site that has all PL games live and legal and watch via VPN, and have also in the past used other things live LOF and general streams. It is ridiculous in this day and age that there is no legal sanctioned streaming service I can use from Ireland to watch the games I want to watch that are not carried on the main TV broadcasts. I also attend quite a few matches as life allows (7-10 the last few seasons) but if I have to pirate something I cannot legally get in Ireland then I will. The exception to the legal thing being the fragmentation of the televised market forced by the EU which they say is a good thing for the consumer, but only costs more as existing subs don't come down.

I'd imagine in the next 10 years that individual country streaming services will be available, as they already are in some countries, but being part of the sky sports market means that we get the worst of both really.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,379 ✭✭✭✭Oat23

Failed miserably, hasn't it? First Row has multiple new addresses that work in the UK and even have one with 'uk' in it :pac:.
