Mario Golf (GC & GBA) characters import question

So I've been playing and loving Mario Golf on the GBA. Last night I played a few hours of Mario Golf on the Game Cube and the manual mentions you can import your GBA characters !? eh...how ? Would love to do this.

Probably with the GBA/GC cable, same one as you use for four swords and crystal chronicles.

Would the Gameboy Player for the Gamecube work you think ? Was thinking of getting one.

I'd doubt it as the gameboy player needs a boot disc to run.
