boat trips to/around any of the islands will be longer than 'short', depending on how patient the 3 yr old is :P you might get lucky and find someone to bring you out for a bit of fishing though. if you're staying in the broadhaven they have a pool and leisure centre - and they also have their own charter boat.

Elly and Mullagh Rua beaches are nice. they're on opposite sides of the mullet so you can choose which one to go to depending on how windy it is!

the play centre in the gateway is quite good, they do food too and while it may not be gourmet it's good value.

or you could take a spin out to the ballycroy national park - lots of displays about nature and life in the area around the park and a nice walk too - plus a tearoom.

you can hire canoes and bikes from this place in belmullet - there's a few other ideas here - errisbeo.ie

bring yer camera, it's beautiful back here. and waterproof jackets for when it inevitably rains ;)

You could take the road from Ballycroy up to Mulranny/Achill...Gorgeous scenery...

There is a great playground in the centre of town, it is lovely and will kill an afternoon for all involved without having to travel. There are lots of nice places to eat and if its too wet to do anything else one of the hotels has a swimming pool, I cant remember which one but I am sure someone else will be able to advise.
