My daughter is on the 48 network and needs a new phone which will have to be SIM-free and she is looking at getting one of the Nokia X3-02.5 phones with both the keypad and the touch screen.

It's going to cost her about €130 or more and since that is a lot of her pocket money I've got the job of seeing what I can find out about them.

She only wants it for calls and texts so the lack of apps, etc isn't an issue.

Anyone got experience of this phone?

It's a bit outdated and has been known to be a bit buggy.

    What's the max budget?
    Anything she wants in it?

Avoid! That phone is ancient and is way too expensive.

If your daughter just wants a phone for calls and texts, then she can just get a Nokia 100 for €20 or so. It has a FM radio, a few pre-installed games and comes in pink. Build quality will be top notch because it's a Nokia and the battery life will be great as well - http://www.handtec.co.uk/nokia-100-pink.html

Of course, that phone doesn't have an internet browser, Facebook, Whatsapp, can't connect to wi-fi, etc. You did just ask for a phone that did talk and texts though :)

The budget is basically a "pocket money" budget as she has to pay for it herself so it's hard to say but as little as she can get away with and still get a phone she likes.

She says she just needs calls and texts but I'm sure she'll want something that doesn't look like a sod of turf :)

The Asha 300 would be a modern incarnation of the phone in the OP, I think the networks are still offering it. If not, look at the usual places for SIM free phones.

The Asha 311 may be another option, it's a bargain basement touchscreen S40 phone. Once again, check the networks and the SIM free sites.

If your daughter sends a lot of texts, then I wouldn't recommend the Asha 311. The touchscreen is very small and it can be fiddly calling and typing messages even for small fingered folks.

For about €70 delivered (have a look on ebay) you can get either a Samsung Ch@t or a Nokia Asha 201 with a full QWERTY keyboard. These will have a browser and will do Facebook/Twitter perfectly well, although the user experience won't be great. If your daughter sends a lot of texts though, she will love the full keyboard though.

If you're willing to stretch the budget, €150 gets you a Lumia 520 sim-free for €150 on Amazon - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Nokia-Lumia-Free-Windows-Smartphone/dp/B00BM24PMY

It might also be worth looking at this Huawei Y300 if you're in the North. It's new with a pretty recent version of Android and it only costs €70 and it's sim-free.

Android would like 1gig of RAM ideally, but €70 you just could not go wrong with this.
