Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

:p thought someone might comment on that. I'm amazed by the amount of times I see people on this forum comment on making out discs so I though I ought to.

That and I was embarrassed by the fact that I realised this week while taxing my car I ha incidentally forgot to put my instance disk in the car in September so could have been done for failing to display for the last 6 months. All sorted now though

Its a Dublin reg golf, bought from western motors in Galway. We have em!! (if it's not western, it's very similar to their surround)

Close very close but not 100%. Didn't realise me covering the details would cause as much controversy as this.

Not quite a 151 BMW, but I made a start on the 'ould Focus today. Unfortunately I forgot my SD card for the camera i had, so only had the phone. So I didn't really bother taking many photos. I did grab an 'iron cleanse wheel' photo and a poorly lit interior photo (that shows nothing really).

Today I did some... Snow foaming, rinsing, 2BM'ing (With AutoGlym Shampoo), De-Ironing wheels (OAC Iron Cleanse), wheel cleaning (AutoGlym wheel clean) and claying. Then I went inside with the hoover and the steam cleaner and went at the seats and the ceiling mostly, and to a lesser extent the floor carpets.

Still not entirely happy with my seat efforts. The seat in the photo below looks patchy, but that was just after having been getting messed with. Hopefully tomorrow it'll look better (the car is staying in the shed overnight, and probably overnight tomorrow night, too).

Strangely enough, I never really looked at them in person, but just from looking at the photos there, I reckon those tyres are on their last treads...

But anyway, other than that when I go back at it tomorrow morning the aim is to get the DAS6 out and start machining from the front, and spend more time inside with the hoover and steam cleaner. Depending on how I'm fixed for time, and my enthusiasm levels, I'll start taking the wheels off then, I think.

(I might actually polish a panel or two, do the interior, polish a panel or two, take a wheel off, etc. just to keep a bit of variety in it, rather than one thing at a time and machine polishing for hours on end).

There was dirt on the outside of the car (mostly at the front of the doors, where it would have been slung up by the wheels), that I tried to get off with a sponge, a wash mitt, an MF towel, boiling water, steam cleaner, etc. and it wouldn't budge. Ended up having to take it off by picking it at it for ages with the nails on my thumbs. I wonder how long that dirt is there.

Also, the clay I used was literally black when it was going over some of the 'trouble' areas on the lower of the car. Raging I didn't have a better camera, but for a car that didn't really look too dirty in the first place - fcuk me! It was filthy.

Is it one of those endangered species of snail? Better relocate it fast before you are forced to build a tunnel under your garage for it.

Yeah i have a fair bit of tar cleanse there, but for some reason I intentionally skipped it. I can't recall exactly what I was thinking but I remember specifically putting it to one side and making a note to use it on the wheels when they come off the car.

Today I did some... Machine polishing... and more machine polishing... and more machine polishing... It just felt like it was never going to end..

Went mad with AutoSol Steel polish for about 2-3 minutes. Will resume where I left off, tomorrow. As an aside, Autosol is something special. Just tears through the dirt and grime on an exhaust in seconds. Can you imagine how long that craps been building up on the exhaust? And 2 minutes with Autosol and it's actually looking chrome-y again. There's no messin' with Autosol!

Machine polish... and... It went better than expected!

I then spent a bit of time in the boot with the hoover and steam cleaner. I also learned, the hard way, that this car has been broken into before. The window at the back, on the left, was broken before.

I know this because, on the estate car you can remove the 'luggage cover'. It sits into two indents on the plastic trim inside. It kinda 'drops' to allow the luggage cover to fall into place.. you can see it here behind the rear seats on both sides (not my pic, obviously)

    6.jpg

Went at the plastic with the steam cleaner and, as you can imagine, the steam comes out at quite a lot of pressure. On those little indents for the luggage cover to clip in, there is a little hole at the bottom. When i ran the steam cleaner over this, shards of broken glass flew everywhere and one hit my eye.

Just my luck. Goes to show though, poor form on whoever changed the glass - never even cleaned it up properly. Bad enough me getting hit, but imagine a child eating it or something (sorry.. always have to throw a young innocent baby into a story to make it all seem worse than it really is)

But anyway.. Wheels off tomorrow, another 2BM to get rid of leftover polish residue, bit o' wax, treat the trim, clean the glass inside and out, some interior detailer around the inside, put the new car mats in, scrub the tyres, dress them and call it a day (if I can get all that done tomorrow, that is.. I'm doubtful

    A final side profile.

Those upgraded internals are hugely expensive for what you get from what I remember.

I had the AccessPort on my RX8 and Versatune gave a lot more usability on the mps so I went for that.

Do you have a Mk1 Focus estate?

If so, do you have 2 or 3 headrests at the back? Looking at the picture I posted of the other one (to show the cargo area), it has 3, but my car only has two (and there are no holes for the centre headrest).

I noticed it earlier today and found it a bit odd (there are three seat belts, though..!?)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,720 ✭✭✭Hal1

I've a hatchback and there are 3 headrests for the rear seats. I can't understand how it wasn't included. It's a small headrest that goes in the middle section, so it doesn't obscure the drivers rear view.

I had a look on donedeal and all the mk1's are the same: http://cars.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/ford-focus-2001/8315320?offset=19
but the facelift models all have it fitted. http://cars.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/ford-focus-1-4-estate-nctd-2016-only-91-k-miles/8691611?offset=5

    Ford logic .

Yeah, that is a bit strange alright, I have to say.

It doesn't really bother me, as I rarely have anyone sitting in the back seats anyway, but I did kinda pause for a moment today when I just seen two headrests. Never registered with me when I was buying the car or such, for some reason.

(first thing I thought was actually "bollocks.. I need a new head rest for the NCT" :( ) But then I checked out of curiousity and no holes to be found for a third headrest, anyway. I won't complain, but it's a strange one alright.

I also find it odd that there's a light in the ceiling over the front seats, and one at the back of the car for the boot (so the boot is illuminated) but there's not one in the middle of the car for the back seats. (so if you turn on both ceiling lights, the front and back of the car are lit up, but the centre, where the back seats are, is in darkness).

I'd say that 2003 one you linked to, the blue one, would have been enjoyable to clean up (more so than the silver). I'd say that blue comes up really well after a good polish.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,720 ✭✭✭Hal1

Well the seats are easily changed on the focus. I removed the rear bench before to deep clean with a wet vac.

So you could find that section with the middle headrest from a facelift focus (mk1.5, 02-04).

The courtesy light in the rear was fitted to ghia models, but can be easily fitted in if you really wanted.

So; for the first time in 8 months, I got out and gave the car a much needed clean!

And before I got to go at my own, I did my Dads car - I had borrowed it last weekend for a trip and returned it filthy, but with a bit more diesel in it :P So only fair, I gave it a tidy up!!

The dirty was fairly caked onto the auld girl!!

    20150217_131741_zpsl6ccwj7s.jpg

    20150217_132206_zps9emawm0p.jpg

    20150217_131753_zps83sv3vbl.jpg

    So the routine was....

Snowfoamed with 50Cal Combat, which did a very good job of lifting the heavy caked on dirt
While the snowfoam was dwelling, went at two wheels with the Woolies and Wheel Cleanse
    Rinsed off the foam
    Cleaned the remaining two wheels
Washed using the Two Bucket Method and tried out 50Cal's Tracer Shampoo ...new favourite, smells great, suds well and is really slick
    Rinse
Coat in a fallout remover - no names, as was testing and didnt find it great
    Rinsed
No need to dry as CarPro HydrO2 is applied to wet panels. It is diluted down to 1 part product and 3 parts water (ideally deionised, but I used cooled boiled water), and did both my Dad's car and my own with 500ml of the mix!

This is the bonnet after the car had been washed down - safe to say that there is absolutely no protection on the car...so no trickery here!

Click to view the video...(may not work on mobile devices)
    th_20150217_140429_zpsgg7335hw.mp4

Here's it being applied...(sorry holding phone in one hand and product or power washer gun in the other doesnt lend itself to stable recording! :) )

Apply HydrO2 to a wet surface, one large panel or a wing and a door at a time is about the ideal area.
    Rinse off
    Do the whole car
Quick rinse to ensure the product is washed off all panels as some gets washed onto the adjoining panel when rinsing off.
    Dry the car
    Stand back and admire!

    th_20150217_142501_zpssqm1vgzz.mp4

Not bad for just over an hours work....though, had all the gear ready, buckets filled, lance solution mixed and on the washer, wheel woolies and wheel cleaner, were at the ready!!
1hr 10mins to wash, and apply the coating - should be good for about 3 months.
I think you'll agree that, it is pretty handy product for someone who hasnt got much time. And if you havent got access to a hose, it could in fact be all done at a jet wash, if you could get a quiet period there.....no need for applicators, or microfiber cloths. Spray on, rinse off, drive away and the water would bead off the car, probably to bone dry!

Tasty enough at 60 quid though! Whats the finish like? good shine?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,377 ✭✭✭Curran

Yes, it does seem a bit steep! Well when you consider you get 4 times the volume of useable versus what you paid for.
500ml's did two cars for me today
    You'd make 2ltrs of product - 8 coatings
    Quick and easy to use

Smaller sizes available, but people say that they're OK for trying out the product, but when used once, they'd buy larger sizes next time to make the savings.

I'm very impressed with the shine, but as with any other product, if your paintwork is prep'd well, anything will look good (for a while), even Turtle Wax! :D

Ah, to be honest, I wouldn't be bothered getting a third headrest. It wouldn't benefit me, to be honest. It'd just get in the way. I just found it a bit weird, though.

There's actually no wax on it in that photo. That was taken during it being powerwashed/2BMed to get rid of the polish residue.

It had just been machine polished, but not sure what polish I used on it, to be honest. Hmm.. Curran might know? I remember wanting the most aggressive polish I could get off his site, and it comes in a black bottle.. possibly with a green lid and white squirt top.. :o

I know the name of it I just can't think of it. Drawing a blank. :o I just searched detailingshed again and can't see it there though anymore.

    Lengthy post number 3...

Today I did some... Wax-on, wax-off, trim treating and glass cleaning, along with a little more messing about inside, and cleaning up the wheels a little. I was a fair bit lazier today than the other days.

I realised that the car has a jack, but no brace, so I took the wheel brace from my dads car (also a mk1 focus) but the brace was too big for my wheel nuts  So I just gave the face of the wheels a going over and will give them a proper looking at when I get a decent brace. Also means the wheel wells aren't as clean as I'd have liked (though I did make an effort with some APC and an MF towel or two).

I gave it two goats of AutoGlym EGP (let each coat sit for about 30-40 minutes before buffing off). I also did the wheels, too, but they didn't look as good as I'd hoped (everytime id rub them, break dust from the backside of the spokes would catch on the cloth and smear.. became tedious..). I'll wash polish and seal the wheels properly when they're off the car. Desperately needs some wheel centre caps, too.

Then some Autoglym Bumper and trim gel went onto the trim, including the logo at both ends:

Finished what I started with the AutoSol.. although, this did require a bit of sanding too, as the Autosol only seemed to go so far on it's own, and the exhaust still needed some cleaning. So I sanded it with some 150 grit sandpaper, which tore lumps out of it. Then went at it with some 1500 grit which smoothened it out a fair bit, and then went at it with Autosol on steel wool to finish it off. It's not perfect, but it's a massive improvement.

Treat the glass with Turtle Wax ClearVue (also had to use some APC here as the two back windows had some weird fuzziness to them that wouldnt come off with just the window cleaner.

Hoovered out the boot again and steam cleaned the carpet

Went at the plastics with Meguiars interior quik detailer:

And then took a photo of myself to celebrate.

Today I Gave My Son a Few Karate Lessons.

At the end of the day he was wrecked, so he has now decided to give up the karate. What can you do. Disappointing. But at least I got the car waxed and the fence painted.

Ok, ok, enough wax on wax off jokes. I'll get my coat.
