Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

There is still a long way to go until the start of the season but I have a question for all fans as of now.
What position in the league (whatever league your team may be) would you consider

    a) Successful
    b) Acceptable
    c) Poor

As and Arsenal fan I will say

    a) 2nd
    b) 4th
    c) 5th

4th is kind of a mixed one; still means Champions League football, but it also means that it was a dis-improvement on last season.

Seems bizarre considering I would think my expectation were reasonable. Ask Any united fan, player and coach and they'll say anything outside of 4th would be disappointing.

I was rolling my eyes at my post. Surely the expectations are identical for the top 4 teams, are as the expectations the same for Spurs, Liverpool & Everton?

The thread would be of more worth possibly if it was in terms of the clubs expectations for the manager this year, ie. league performance, european and cup performances. What would be deemed as the minimum expectations and what would be considered exceptional.

Well the OP was addressing the fans and specifically about the league they are in. Not the clubs expectations or expectations of the manager.
    Thanks.
I am finding the answers interesting in general but would love to hear from more fans.

    Liverpool

    1. 4th
    2. 5th
    3. 6th & below

6th and below would represent very limited progress and most fans would be disappointed with it. I wouldn't be calling for the managers head but it would be unsatisfactory.

    River Plate
    1. Win opening or closing tournament.
    2. 2nd or 3rd in both or progress well enough in copa sudamericana to get into Libertadores the season after

It's no ordinary change of management. I'll give Moyes a season without scrutiny until he puts his mark on the team.
Chelsea have arguably the best manager in the game back and City have a very good manager now and are still buying whoever takes their fancy.

United have downgraded in the managerial position. Chelsea have massively upgraded and City have upgraded a fair bit too. 3rd is a very real possibility.

Could they not have just got a top-level manager instead? Maybe this is for another discussion.

What's done is done. 3rd wouldn't be catastrophic in the current situation.
I would expect things to improve the following season though, when things are more settled.

It depends how far behind United are in 3rd too.(if happens)

I mean only few points of top, would be ok. 15 points or something would not be acceptable.

So can you point out what the difference is? As I said any Top 4 team will have the exact same answers:

    a) 1st
    b) inside top 4
    c) outside top 4

Taking a quick look at Liverpool and Spurs replies suggest the same trend.

I'm not questioning the validity of the OP's question, but was the answer to this question not as obvious as it could be? Hence why I said you might get a better view of supporters expectations if you asked to consider the impact of performance in Europe & Cup competitions.

As an example, a City supporter might consider last 8 in the CL, League Cup & 2nd/3rd in League as a successful season. Whereas in just the league it is a simple 1st.

The difference is, with Fergie in charge a 3rd place finish would not really be acceptable. With Moyes it is for me.

I'm pretty sure most Chelsea fans will be expecting to be in the top 2 this season whether they want to be brave enough to say it here or not.

So is that saying a 3rd for Fergie was poor or acceptable? Even though you are saying there is a difference it still falls into the

    a) 1st
    b) inside top 4
    c) outside top 4

For the Top 4, if they don't win it, they have to qualify for the CL, which would then be acceptable. A poor season would be not to qualify. So even though you are saying there is a difference, the expectations haven't changed.
