Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Kaka to milan for 8.5 mill from sao paulo anyone?

The steady European interest in Kaká culminated in his signing with Italian club AC Milan in 2003 for a fee of €8.5 million, described in retrospect as "peanuts" by club owner Silvio Berlusconi

    Victor Wanyama for £900k
    Fraser Forster for £2m

Tim Cahill to Everton for £1.5 million.
    Darron Gibson for £1 million.

What value do you think Gibson has now, how is that bargain?

I have no idea what his value would be now but his contribution to the team has been worth the 1 million.

At least double or triple I'd imagine.

Hardly represents one of the biggest bargains of previous season.

Still a decent bargain in a recession though.

The criteria for what constitutes a bargain from the OP is a bit restrictive!

    I try my best :pac:

Didn't want to leave it open to everything because anything could be considered a bargain

Chicarito, Suarez, Veira, Bergkamp, Anelka (to arsenal), seedorf, pirlo to milan, kaka to milan, el shaarawy to milan

these are all players who have been bought and then developed into much better players and greatly increased their value.

What I was trying to think of were players that were already established and worth say €20m but sold for €10-12m.

Transfers like that where a club gets a great deal on a good player because maybe his current club wanted rid of him (ala Balotelli who left City for €20m but you could argue he's worth twice that now after a few months)

Keane - Notts Forrest to Man Utd
Ba - W Ham to Newcastle
Cole - Newcastle to Man Utd
Cantona - Leeds to Man Utd
    Bergkamp - Inter to Arsenal
Makelele - Real Madrid to Chelsea
Nesta - Lazio to AC Milan
    Dante - Mochengladbach to Bayern
    Seedorf - Inter to AC

Plenty more I can't think of right now.

Lucas Leiva for approx €7 mil especially when you compare it to Anderson who cost €30 mil at the time

You wouldn't get 7 for him now though.

If United bag Thiago for 18m, that will be an outstanding investment imo

I might be wrong but wasn't that a British transfer record at the time? A bargain in todays money I suppose!

Really you wouldn't get €7 mill euro for Lucas? That's like £5 million. Some posts just leave me dumbfounded.

Think you meant Anderson, one of united worst ever buys. Fat, lazy, just no good enough.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,128 ✭✭✭✭Oranage2

Robbie Keane Liverpool to spurs - 12 million or something like that

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,377 ✭✭✭Smithwicks Man

You'd get a lot more than €7m for Lucas Leiva now. Twice that in fact.

United paid €30m for Anderson? I'm sorry.. What?! Awful, awful transfer.

United signing Thiago would be a tremendous signing. He wants Bayern as his first choice but they don't want/need him. A must buy.

    .

Both were british record transfers. You pay the most, you should get the best, that's value IMO, not a bargain

Henry to Barcelona for 16 million was an absolute steal. Arguably, the best player in the world at the time.

In the same transfer window Darren Bent was signed for 16.5m by Tottenham :pac:

I was thinking this when I saw it as well :pac:

I think Xavi6 may have been saying that anything over €10m wouldn't be a bargain for Thiago but maybe I'm wrong in saying that's what he meant ?

Who'd want to waste €11m on Messi anyway... :pac:

I could've swore I read a few weeks ago that talks had broken down with Tito and if he was going to leave, joining up with Guardiola was his 1st choice but I could very well be mistaken and can't find a link

Tbh I'm annoyed I said that now because it annoys me when people randomly say stuff like that without being able to source it/back it up. Realistically there is no way I could know what his preference would be. Although I do think he will leave for Munich or United and if he's serious about wanting all the playing time, United makes more sense

:pac: .. It's more that there's that much rubbish online about it I couldn't be bothered weaving through it all. I'd imagine if it was true, it would have came up though :p

    Falcao to Porto 3.5 million

Have to mention Porto when you see the margin they make on transfers.

If you look how much they pay for players and then move them on it is incredible business.
And they are bloody successful to boot.
Hell they even make money on managers.

I am not allowed discuss …

Edwin Van Der Sar (Fulham to Manchester United) - £2m

Established goalkeeper, great leader and organiser of the defensive line. Key part of United going on a serious winning streak from the time he joined.

It was £60,000 was it not?

Benteke has to be worth a shout. Cost about £7m, but single handedly kept Villa up last season and has to be worth at least double what he was bought for.

How far back is recent. I saw someone mention Bergkamp.

If we're going back that far.

Vieira and Overmars to Arsenal gotta be included

Even if he only had one year left on his contract, Juventus have got Tevez for a great price.

I don't think Veira had proven himself to be worth much more than the peanuts he left Milan for but I suppose it does count as Arsenal surely wouldn't have expected to get him that cheap, even though Milan didn't want him. What a player he went on to become

Tevez to Juve has to be included for me. Worth a lot more than €12m as a player (although he is in his last year of contract)

Llorente, Tevez, Pirlo and Pogba for a combined total of €12m.

Think it was more like 60 thousand Euros for Coleman. We all knew he was going to be worth a lot more someday, pretty depressing how rode we got on the transfer fee.

    Ashley Cole to Chelsea.

    £5million plus Gallas.

    Cech £7m

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,781 ✭✭✭SureYWouldntYa

    Lampard to Chelsea.

£11 million at the time, but it proved to be a bargain over time

so 11m for messi or ronaldo wouldn't be a bargain!? lol :p

You would never get them for that price though so it's not a realistic example.

A "bargain" to me is someone who was undervalued by their club at the time of sale, and a player sold at 10 million doesn't really fit that as it's a hefty price.

As for Thiago, calling him a bargain before he kicks a ball in the league is a tad premature. If he turns out to be a disaster, fails to settle etc, what will he be then? Hold fire on that one til next summer at least.
