I actually foresee how it could be worth something to someone to say they 'played in the English league' (even for 10 minutes). However to claim you played in the conference for 10 minutes doesn't really have the same ring to it.

A load of Premiership fans of clubs who will never have to operate under the same financial constraints as Macclesfield having a go is ridiculous.

Macclesfield will do what they gotta do to keep themselves in business. Think the embarrassment of this is nothing compared to that of administration.

Pay to Play offer withdrawn

Macclesfield Town acted quickly this evening to withdraw its offer to give someone a chance to appear for the club in a competitive game in return for payment.

Following widespread coverage of the offer in the national media the club has issued the following statement:

The "pay to play" proposal was one of many innovative ideas that have been considered in the last few weeks to raise both funds and interest in the club. It was intended to be a light-hearted idea that would be of interest only to our local media.

We now recognise that, whatever controls are put in place, it creates a possibility of altering the outcome of a competitive fixture and as such, clearly crosses an important line with respect to the integrity of the game. We are therefore withdrawing the offer and would like to apologise unreservedly to the football authorities and to the Football Conference for our error of judgement in this matter.

I'd love to do it, provided 20k was pocket money to me. I'd probably try a bigger club and more money tho, for a years training with the team + travelling to games and a cup appearance. Would be a cool experience.
