The longstanding Bus Éireann route from Cork and Kinsale to Ballinspittal, Ringrone, Barrels Cross, Garretstown, The Speckled Door Bar and Kilcoleman Cross will operate for the last time this Friday evening, 28th June 2013.

Should we be happy or sad?

I find it very sad that a lifeline route has been cut. Clearly it doesn't pay and Bus Eireann already operates at a loss. What are people's other options now for getting to Kinsale/Cork?

Strange they pulled the route at the beginning of summer, just as they might have expected some seaside custom from the city.

Per the Southern Star, Bus Éireann have applied to the NTA for a license to re-introduce the Kinsale-Ballinspittle-Garrettstown service, the catch being that it's a weekend service only operational in summer time.

FYI, there is a rural transport programme connecting Ballinspittle with Kinsale & Bandon during the week.

Thanks Tina. That's interesting about West Cork Rural Transport - I'd not heard of it (but not being local there's no reason why I should). It's good that these lifeline services continue to be funded in these hard times.

The timetable for the Summer Sunday only Bus Éireann route 226 Kinsale - Ballinspittal - Garretstown - Kinsale is now available here (bottom of 2nd page):
    http://buseireann.ie/pdf/1371825540-226.pdf
and the accompanying press release here:
    http://buseireann.ie/news_timetable.php?id=1330&month=Jul

Interesting regarding the rural transport services though the downside is that an integrated ticket is not available i.e. Ballinspittle to Cork would entail buying two separate tickets.

The majority of Bus Éireann routes around county Cork and the country in general are subsidised. So, for instance all of the following routes are subsidised:
    http://www.buseireann.ie/inner.php?id=247#Cork
That said certain subsidised routes are (much) better used than others.

The only ones not subsidised are the Expressway ones (e.g. Route 40 Cork - Tralee/Waterford; Route X8 to Dublin via Cashel etc...).
