Looks like a love letter from Slaanesh to be honest.

Well that looked ... unique. I mean it could be interesting and artistic, but I could also see how easily it'd be crass and vulgar.

To be honest, it just looks like another Agony.

Yes! I was watching it thinking I'd see this kind of sub-giger body horror in a game before...

At least they got enough self awareness to make fun of themselves and other games/issues.

Release trailer popped up for 198X, a mix of character drama told through recreations of old arcade games. The pixel art looks particularly smart, while the games within very authentic.

Bumping this thread as came across a tasty-looking Kickstarter that with heavy inspirations from stuff like Hyper Light Drifter, Superbrothers: Sword and Sworcery, not to mention classics like Out of This World.

The 80s / pixel-art aesthetic may be a bit ubiquitous at this stage in indie projects, but when it's executed as smartly and as arresting as this trailer suggests, it was hard not to take notice. The screen distortions are very jarring mind you, but hopefully that's just the trailer.

Still waiting for this to be released, will be waiting a while it seems.

They last updated in March over some new hires so they still seem to be active enough

Yes, there all working together in an office now instead of being spread all over which is good.

Good to hear: I suspect with these pixel art games with such rich, HD era artwork is that it probably requires a huge amount of art assets, which kinda runs contrary to the thinking that pixel art is lower budget.

Glad they're still working, TBH I've only been stung once on a KS project, and that was Project Phoenix, which back in 2015 was flagged here as a bit of a scam.

Does Mighty number 9 counts as being stung? Because it sure felt like it... Also never got That Which Sleeps or The Mandate. The first game I backed (Malevolence) however went live in April 2019 instead of 2012 as originally planned which I thought was well done by the developer.

yeah I backed The Mandate as well which fell through and I also backed the Grifta morphing Gamepad which was a no show

... and it's apparently quite short, only being Part 1 of a story, the next out in 2020; caveat emptor n' all that ...

Some impressive sprite work in this one.

Kinda felt like that first Prince of Persia in the movement; it'll all be how it controls. Looks slick and acrobatic, so depends on how fluid the player can pull it off, and the devs make it click.

I also see Blasphemous came out the other week; the pixel art still looks rich and creative, but by God it looks like a morbid, macabre slog. Not sure I could play something that's basically Catholicism on some heavy / tainted drugs.

Holy necro-post Batman! It has been a while…

With the way the industry is at the moment, it's hardly surprising that crowd funding still has an important role to play in getting games from smaller studios made. This one in particular has caught my eye, and it might interest some of you too.

OnceLost Games are a new start-up founded by veterans from the early Elder Scrolls games. Their goal is to give the RPG genre a kick up the hole (my words, not theirs) by applying modern development standards and quality-of-life advancements to the design philosophy of classic role-playing games.

Lofty ambitions then, but if The Wayward Realms is going to use modern game tech to give me an experience more akin to Morrowind than Skyrim, then I'm interested in reading your pamphlet, OnceLost.

The Kickstarter begins on May 30th.

I would be careful of kickstarter, read back over the first couple of pages and a lot of the games never got released/ the devs took the money and ran.

I know the risks, and would hope everyone else does too. Thankfully any video game project I've backed thus far has come to fruition (Kingdom Come, Divinity, Pillars of Eternity), but there's always the first time of course.
