Garden Maintenance

    I have a quick question.

I live in a house share which is pretty nice with reasonable rent. Our front and back garden need some serious maintenance and while there are tools (electric mower with blunt blade, grass trimmer/edger without wire and electr. hedge trimmer) I wonder if the landlord is responsible for keeping these in good shape and whether he can expect us to maintain the garden. I actually do not mind doing that but would expect him to replace broken/used parts of the tools. I would also need a ladder to do the maintenance..

    Any ideas/tips on this?

    What does your lease say?

Are the tools broken? I would consider the wire for the trimmer to be like a lightbulb ie replace as used.

If you need a ladder then ask him for it.

Discuss the with the landlord and come to an agreement on it.

I rent, and we maintain our own. We have our own lawnmower, just like we have our own hoover. I plant a few things and eat the apples off the tree in the garden. I use the garden like I use the kitchen. It's just another room to us.

When I was a student, the landlord came around every few weeks and cut the grass and hedges. Mainly because he was aimed at the student market and assumed we wouldn't bother.

Check your lease, contrary to most renters' understanding, leases usually require them to maintain the garden.

Your lease probably has something that says you have to maintain the garden however if there are trees/bushes that are badly overgrown, you may be able to agree with the landlord to get someone in to sort these as it's a more dangerous thing than cutting grass & could require specialists.
