I know it's slightly selfish but one of the reasons I'm considering volunteering is just to get out of the house and meet some people my own age. Now, I'm just not sure where that age group (early 20s) would volunteer. What organisations would attract more young people volunteering (if any)?

I was involved in societies in college, film making, mental health (albeit can't really do anything related to that atm). I'm into computers, building them, software development etc.

Your skills may be of interest to community groups helping people trying to get back to work, community development or organising local newsletters, websites promoting the area etc. While not specifically all your age group there will be a mix of male/female etc. and you will be meeting away from the false atmosphere of pubs and clubs

You could try Coder dojo maybe? It's working with kids but most of the other volunteers will be your ages.

Maybe a chat with the guys in Camara - http://camara.org/volunteer/ireland/

I always admired what these guys are at.

+1 I've been mentoring with CoderDojo for almost a year now and love it. So rewarding and i've made some great friends locally and further a field.
