Parking for Staff+Safety in Carlow

    Hi All
I was just wondering how did everyone feel about the current parking situation in town? Personally, I don't think it's great, especially if you work some where like Tullow street. You can only park at Dinn Ri for max 4 hours and any where with all day parking is a bit of a trek depending on where you work.
Now don't get me wrong, I have no problem with walking my issue is safety. I am a female and I work in a bar and 1 day a week I finish early ish, but still in the evening and every other day it is late. I find that parking areas are very poorly lit and you feel on edge and unsafe even if there is more than one walking.
For example, I usually have to park where Super Valu used to be as 1.It offers all day parking and 2.You can usually get a spot.
But it tends to be full of drunks and very dark especially if you can't get anywhere near the entrance. I just think a few street lights and maybe an anti loitering campaign could make things much safer. Also, I think staff in town should get a permit-not to park for free- but to at least get a discount and to at least be able to park places like Dinn Ri, Super quinn etc without fear of being clamped. I just think the options are very slim for people.
I mean, rather than build another damn roundabout or mess with road markings why not invest in safety??!!!

I'm not sure what can be done regarding your personal safety, but realise that every parking space occupied by staff is denying spaces all day to customers.

Look, staff in town already take up specific parking spaces regardless so if a discount was given to staff it'd wouldn't make blind bit of difference to customers, there would still be the same amount of spaces.
And the biggest issue is safety, could there not be even better lighting in areas at night? I mean week after week I hear stories of people-men or women- walking back to their car or even home and being followed or attacked. It may not always make the news or be front page stuff but it happens. I'm not solely concerned with my own safety, as I feel I can look after myself but you never know. I always try make sure no staff ever walk home or to their car alone, male or female, are you saying that safety doesn't matter? I'm talking safety for consumers too, attacks etc happen a lot. And please don't say 'they happen in every town' because to me that is a futile argument. This is the town/county we are based in and we should be concerned with protecting people here. I know that times are tough and there can't be someone out there like security to make sure areas are safe but at the very least a bit of decent lighting, especially in dark parking lots and alleys. There will always be scumbags who don't care and will attack but if at the very least a majority could be deterred that'd be something.

What does your employer say? If it is such a problem then it may be in their inerest to have some parking in place or at least an agreement with a local car park.

I think Superquinn have rates for all-day/multiday parking. I think they just insist you go up a floor to leave spaces.

If you park on the ground level of superquinn you'll get out for free when it's closed as the barriers all go up.

I do what SV said. I've gotten so used to getting out for free at night, that I have gotten caught out on numerous occasions by parking there during the day, going to leave and then realising I actually have to pay.

Also, I'm a guy, and I've been attacked twice walking back to my car from work in a bar on Tullow St. Nothing particularly serious, just frightening at the time.

I think if you have fears about returning to your car at night ring the Guards and ask for an escort . Tell them you are returning to your car at 10PM in L and N car park. They are around the town anyway and will probably oblige .
PS make sure all the paperwork is correct on the car .:D

I really cannot see the Gardaí being 'booked' to be your personal bodyguards.

They are very obliging even though they are very busy . They will make a show of force if requested .

They certainly won't, hard pressed to get out to actual crimes that have been committed! No chance of seeing them for potential crimes!! :-)
