    Large cache.
    Adblock plus.
    Ghostery.
For absolute balls to the wall minimal data usage you could use compression over a proxy (or even VPN). Text compresses very well.

On linux the SSH client supports this behaviour with ssh -C -D <port> <server>.

edit: Or you could try using a text only browser like links.

Depends on your browser. You'll have to google for yours.

Also look at NoScript for Firefox. Should help you control various scripts from running in the background.

Yeah, remove all plugins, Java, Flash, etc.

You can also get an extension for most browsers that lets you change the User Agent of the browser. So you can tell all sites that you're browsing on a mobile device and you'll be given the mobile version of many sites, which is much more lightweight.

This is the answer to the question in the OP tbh. Lynx is most definitely the least amount of data you can possibly use.

Of course, it's not that user-friendly. Without knowing more of your requirements OP, it's hard to help. Why are you minimising data usage? Do you have a monthly data limit? Or is it specific sessions over a mobile-tethered session that you want to minimise?

Boardsie Enhancement Suite - a browser extension to make using Boards on desktop a better experience (includes full-width display, keyboard shortcuts, dark mode, and more). Now available through your browser's extension store.

1G is probably enough for quite a bit if you're not streaming video. A very large cache and looking at compressed transfer would be where I would focus my efforts there.

Have you any linux knowledge at all?
