Now to cut long story short ive been working in retail well over 6 yrs with same company,The work i do is easy enough but sometimes it can get stressful with managers or staff workers trying to pick on me.That said my main problem is for the last couple years ive only been getting 2-3 days of work at most, now im down to two days most of the time, have spoken with manager about it,and he understands the problem but basically theres couple more workers who he has to split hours between them. Now to be fair i get easiest days of the week to work, but when it comes to payday i get around 200e per week if lucky,on top of that i have to commute to work, pay bills and my rent,im living at home the only reason im still able to survive, but im at the point where i dont see any future for myself anymore,as i dont have any other qualifications and approaching my 30s fast, and coming in to work twice a week, doesn't motivate me anymore, basically i became sloppy,no motivation what so ever,as i know by the end of week ill be bringing back home 100e after my expenses for that week (food, fuel),and even that 100e is gone by the end of month everything i manage to put aside, goes towards covering monthly bills.
My personal life became non existent as i cut all my going out and everything that isn't needed out,so to speak i end up at home most of the week doing nothing.
Had few suggestions like to sign up on work allowance for the days i dont work,or find same job in another place, but neither of them really sticks to me as i dont want end up in another retail place, nor scrounge couple extra euros from welfare.I do have some hobbies and skills but to be true i exhausted myself where i dont bother pursuing any of it.Basically im looking if anyone is/or had been in similar position and how did you overcame it.Seems i made long story after all  thx.

Firstly I think the part about scrounging a few extra euro from welfare is wrong. This is the situation welfare is for. There are pleny of people scrounging, but you would not be one of them!!! That would be an extra 100 ish a week to help you get yourself back together, even if that is by improving your social life.

Secondly, I am no jobs expert but I am in IT and I can tell you there is work, contract work mainly, in even basic IT support. If you have an aptitude for computers at all then you could do an A+ cert course and be in a contract role earning €110 -140 a day in an industry where there is still work.

If not, get doing another course, even business sales might be an option although call centre work seems to be all there is lately.

Most importantly, get yourself out of your funk. Get socialising again and with happiness will come motivation and maybe you'll figure it out yourself.

    +1

Also agree you should sign on, it gives some extra money to do things or get training in another industry. Also there are schemes such as job bridge open to you when getting social welfare which could help you.

Also have you considered what area you want to work in which would make you happy? If so, consider seeking some volunteer work in the area if possible. This will get you experience which may help you get a job as well as good interaction and socialising with people. For instance if you are into IT you could do a course as mentioned and maybe volunteer at a local community centre showing elderly people how to use computers. I am sure you get the idea I am getting at anyways.

I was working a few years ago in an industry I hated, I was working full time and half ok money but hated the job. I didnt like it and put on weight and all that. Left two years ago and done masters in college and got a good job in good company and I like the job. I am much happier and lost lots of weight since as much more active on my downtime as I feel better. It really makes a huge difference.

thanks for honest replies, yeah i think im missing a lot in field of motivation,im a lot into IT but only basic stuff, for ex i can setup simple websites, put together pc,install and use most software, but imo every second person with ability to use google can do such stuff nowadays. That said it slim market for such jobs nowadays, and as someone suggested might do some courses in near future to get some higher qualifications and skills.thx all

    Hi Scamalert,
I would sign on for the days you are not working. If you look up welfare.ie and put in the search section part time work you can find what you may be entitled to.
I would advise you to work x number of days a week rather than 3 hours today and 4 hours tomorrow. If you work an hour a day you can't claim for that day.

I think the reason you feel fed up is that you are working and having no life due to the expenses you have. Also in your 20's you should be having some type of social life/going on holidays ect.
If you claim for the days your not working you will have money to have a bit of a social life.
Also you can use the extra money towards some course which will improve your career and earnings long term.

I would save up and go to a career consultant who can get you to do test ect and they would be in a position to advise you what course ect you could consider doing.
Also if a course is approved by revenue you may be able to claim 20% back of the cost of it. I would advise you to pay half of the cost in ie Sep and half in Jan.

Those are not skills the majority possess !! I think you under estimate your abilities. You write well and are coherent and verbose, signs of an intelligent person imo.

Given your age why not contact FAS and try the CompTIA certification or Web Design? A gateway to a new more rewarding career and some self appreciation and respect. Plus you'll be paid for your training and travel expenses, feel better about yourself and meet some like minded people.

As said above, you're exactly the kind of person Social Welfare is meant for. You want to work and want to feel included.

I hope you manage to sort things out for yourself and find your path.

    Ken
