Anyone done one recently? After years of crappy damp summers I thought the soil was never going to become at all firm ever again. I went out and forked several spots around the back garden and its now pretty hard - about 2 inches depth except for an area at the bottom in the shadow of the shed which remains easy enough to push the fork into with damp on the prongs when pulled.

How else does one test the ground? Its a sure fire way of knowing if your water table is lurking or finally falling away and the soil drying out decently. Helps with the weeds and such.
