African history books

Looking for some recommendations on books about African history. I know its a really broad topic but I would be intrested to read about all historic events etc. Thanks in advance for any recommendations:)

Edit: something general along the lines of "Bury my heart at wounded knee" or even something like "Rabbit proof fence"

A fairly good and brief book: A short introduction to African History by John Parker and Richard Rathbone . This will be a starting point and gives an overview of the continent.

Tom Joad

JD Fage - A history of Africa is probably the definitive history of Africa from prehistory to now. Think of Fage to African history as Moody or FX Martin to Irish history.

A history of Africa can be tough going in places but well worth sticking with if you want a definitive history.

The Scramble for Africa by Thomas Pakenham is the definitive book that covers the period of colonisation.

Maybe, not exactly what you are looking for, but The Zanzibar Chest by Aidan Hartley is a fantastic book. It deals with more recent African history and is told through the authors personal experiences as a freelance journalist.
