That was a nasty fall. Didn't look like an accident to me, Cav took a right swing into him and didn't try to avoid him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,316 ✭✭✭Reginald P. DuM

That kittel is some kid.. Cav walloped into Argos man Veelers.. Was a seriously busy finish tho he can't really be blamed.. Left kinda isolated, the winner had the best train simple as that.

Looks like Cav shouldered him to me as well

just talked about it their, for me cavendish was intent to not give an inch their pretty dangerous for someone who makes remarks about other sprinters.

Did they just say Veelers swerved into Cav?

In the stage Greipel won last week, his last lead out man pulled out sharply to the left making Cav go the long way round. I wonder is Cav delivering a message now.

Ah to be fair he did start to move across a few inches... but it was a strong shoulder from Cav...

    Eurosport claiming Cav was "hampered".

Looks to me like Cav went for him, looks worse from the front view

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,606 ✭✭✭MPFG

Cavandish did that deliberately ....could have brought down alot more riders....

Looks bad from the front on view.

So what punishment is Cav likely to get? He was certainly hampered but that was a blatant 'foul'.

They initially weren't saying anything. Now they're trying to blame the injured party!
They also claimed it wasn't a 'real' sprint because the main contenders weren't there even though the main contenders for the green jersey finished 1, 2, 3 and 4!

Watching the replay (again and again ...) , Veelers is cleary holding to the white line in the centre of the road, Cav moves out to the right and then cuts back across into Veelers. Not sure how Veelers could be blamed on this.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,316 ✭✭✭Reginald P. DuM

They are reviewing the images and a decision is due shortly.. I must say my initial reaction has been tempered a little in the close up cav grit his teeth on impact. Seems to indicate he knew what he was doing.. The pictures won't do him any favours..there's no question he knew he was beaten before the impact, no catching those Germans with the lead they had... We'll know soon enough.

Anyone see the Cav interview just now? When asked about the crash he took the journo's tape recorder!

    Tweet from Cav -

    Mark Cavendish ‏@MarkCavendish 36s

Not seen a replay of the final yet, but was involved in an incident with Tom Veelers. Whatever has happened, if I'm at fault, I'm sorry.

Hmmm, he said "incident" not "accident"... ;)

The BBC is the worst so far..
It's shoulder to shoulder and elbow to elbow. Cav is almost elbowed off by an Argos rider.
Right, I've seen that finish again. Tom Veelers took a look right and then left before veering into the path of Mark Cavendish, who had tried to go round him to chase Marcel Kittel and Andre Greipel. Cav's elbows were flying but he did not ride into Veelers as it appeared at first glance. I don't think he can be blamed for that crash.

After review the jury has spoken.. No punishments served.

it was the right decision. It was clearly Cavendish's fault but not intentional. Reckless at worst

but he should keep this in mind next time he tries to diss someone like Roberto Ferrari about how they sprint.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 570 ✭✭✭Oldlegs

@MarkCavendish Just seen the sprint. I believe I didn't move line. I'm actually coming past Veelers & we touch elbows when he moves. Anyway, hope he's ok.

Not sure what replay he was looking at ....
His line was clearly angled back in towards Veeler

No question. Think he might be best advised to stay off the iphone until the dust settles a little. At least if ya can admit your error you hang onto some degree of credibility over the incident. No one saying it was a hanging offence, just a little crazy, but thats high speed sprinting for ya, a man only gets a split second to make decisions.

Maybe I am missing something. But is there a way to watch the full stage from eurosport player on demand after its finished?

Have been looking for that clip.. Not impressed was he! Almost another semi lunge at the reporter, akin to his one at Veelers.. Wonder did he give it back? Without an apology I would suspect.. The reporter should nick his bike just before the TT tomorrow, see how Manx likes that!!

Anyone know why Contador is 200/1 on PaddyPower for the time trial tomorrow??

He's won them in the past and surely will be there or there abouts. Worth the e/w

Your essentially getting 50/1 on him finishing exactly 3rd spot in a flattish run where others are stronger.. Martin and Froome will go faster, as i suspect will a few more.. Think back to the Dauphine while back, Richie Porte went out after him on the ITT, think was 2 mins behind and caught him on the road.. Don't wanna put ya off backing it if ya really fancy but I wouldn't touch it...

kittels lead out man clearly deviates from the nicely placed white line in the middle of the road [placed for this exact purpose, always wondered what they were for, turns out its for the off chance a bike race finishes on the road]

The finish line is a diagonal line, the further to the right cav goes the further he has to go to win it, and given that everything is decided on tyre widths usually in sprints with these lately, cav is basically standing his ground to the idiot leadout man of kittels, by recognising what he is doing [trying to force him into the barriers on the right] and bracing for it, so that when the lead out guy runs into him its the leadout guy thats going to hit the deck, well played cav he's been in enough stupid crashes the last couple of years caused by others. unfortunately though theres collateral damage when you do it with 180+ riders behind you :o

well the leadout guy dug his own grave, if he didnt want to impede cav and die with consequences he should have gone left, his fault really he decided to go right into cav instead

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,570 ✭✭✭at1withmyself

Crash has happened, he's been excused of any fault by the people that matter a.k.a the organisers....might as well deal with it. They have access to the riders and better technology then any of us and regardless of the his or his fault argument those in power have spoken so can't we just look to the next stage.

surely the problem with the argos guy (who cav rode into) is he was a lead out guy and then gets in the way of the sprinters. on the overhead the argos guy kicks out right just before cav hits him and cav been cav makes sure he stays upright.

defo looks a lot worse from the front shot

I love how animated his eyebrows are at around 1:00 in this interview, where he's not making any eye contact with the camera or the guy he's talking to.

Definitely one of my favourite commentators in any sport.

This, he might not have meant to knock veelers or cause a pile up but definite red mist there from a guy who clearly hates losing more than he loves winning.

From the eurosport view it looks like Cavendish leans into it, but it is slowed down a lot and at the speed they were at it could be misleading, wish I could get a video from the front. At the slow speed, it looks like Cavendish leans in but if it was faster, it could be that Veelers merged right.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 178 ✭✭doozer16

Cavendish should be reprimanded for what he did today REGARDLESS of what happened before, he clearly intentionally elbowed/shouldered the other rider. Despicable act.

Veeler is slowly drifiting left, looks behind, sees Cavendish is also drifting left (he is just until veelers head spins back). Veeler then starts to drift right to let the sprinters through (possibly, who knows) but Cavendish has just changed his mind at this point, then he shoulders him, there is no denying that, he purposely digs out his elbow, how it was missed by those in charge is beyond me.

Veeler was possibly stupid not to hold the line, but I can see why he started to change direction slightly. Cavendish had every right to be annoyed but he had no right to do what he done. That was assault, plain and simple, he even kicks out his ass slightly to balance while he tries to knock him.

Nothing will happen though, shameful behaviour.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,320 ✭✭✭MrCreosote

I'd have a different take on it seeing the front on shot- seems to me the "shoulder push" happens after the initial contact. Veeler is drifting into Cav, is about to hit/touches him, so Cav shrugs him off- more a self-preservation thing than anything. The ass-kick was to stay up himself

Veeler didn't hold his line- I don't think he was maliciously blocking, just looked exhausted.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,817 ✭✭✭corny

An unfortunate coming together but i fail to see what Cav did wrong.

Initially Veelers goes left, so Cav goes right into the space. Veelers then drifts back to the right, his own stupidity, naive to just accept he was making room for anyone, drifts into Cav, Cav braces himself for the contact and Veelers goes over.

If you look afterwards the Lotto rider (think its Roelandts) does the same thing. Looks over his shoulder and veers innocently to the left straight into Cav's line.

Can't figure out if Veelers was looking for Cav or it was his own stupidity from the camera shots but sprinters do come together. Nothing out of the ordinary on Cav's part as far as i'm concerned.

hmm thought that myself, noticed a few lead out guys coming back down the line rather than swinging off out of the way (wasnt it cavs leadout guy bouhani hit when he went down). maybe this is the new way for breaking up/blocking the guys like cav who even if they are behind you will come past you.

also cavs leadout train is nothing like it used to be (and most of the guys are his ex leadout guys)
