Hi. My sister is employed as a babysitter, she babysits 5 different places during a week on 5-6 days. She is earns around 150-200 a week from this job, can anyone guide us how can she register her employment as a self employed person with revenue? Please brief me on that and how to manage her accounts like her payments on a book, can it be a simple book where she can record her payments every day on daily basis plus list her expenses from house to work like travel cost and etc. Your advise will be much appreciated. Thanks a lot.

    Just register using Form TR1
    http://www.revenue.ie/en/tax/vat/forms/formtr1.pdf

When she goes into Revenue, they can give her a few handbooks and guides to managing her accounts.

Her accounts should be pretty straightforward, no need to register for Vat or anything like that.

On the Form TR1 complete parts A & B, sign it, send it to your local Tax Office. Tip - starting your financial year on 1st January makes life easier, as it corresponds to the Revenue year.

Compile a simple hand written ledger showing say days vertically down the left side, with relevant headings across the top - eg: travel cost, phone and further columns for any other allowable expense incurred. Note: she is effectively "working from home" and can therefore claim reasonable expenses for heat, light and power.

An A4 book with one month per page works well. Keep all receipts and bundle them chronologically by month.

The Revenue year end is December 31st 2013. You have until October 2014 to submit your return for 2013 - this is done on a Form11 either manually or via the Revenue on-line service (ROS).

At first sight Form11 is very daunting, but remember that the vast majority (maybe 95%) of it will not apply to you.

As a sole trader you do not need your accounts verified by an Accountant.

Your Income Tax/USC/PRSI are calculated on your trading Profit not income.

    Good luck!
