What car to get for €22k?

Currently on the market for a used car with a Budget of €22k.

Currently have a 03 Passat Auto Highline TDI with 104k miles on it.
Can't fault the car, have 3 people in the queue to take it off my hands.

I've been mainly looking at A6s Saloon or Estate. Ideally S-Line/Le Mans with reasonable mileage.

Don't want to pay over €750 tax.

Have two young kids and will be looking to keep the car for at least 5 years.

What else should I be looking at?

What do you want to get from the change?

Bought an audi from Cargiant in the past - no problems with it in 4years of ownership.

Something like this is in your budget allowing for VRT -http://www.cargiant.co.uk/Audi/A6/details-600247-Audi-A6.asp?viewtype=0

If you have two young ones wouldn't an hatch or estate suit best ?

    Volvo V70 etc ?

    Audi Estate ?

    Passat estate ?

Youve got €22k grand to spend and youre worried about tax? I would not let tax be a limiting factor in what Im looking for; the right car might cost you a couple of hundred quid a year more to tax but possibly a couple of grand less to buy. Swings and roundabouts.

I really like the Accord, great engines, the Audi's are prone to DMF failure can cost 1500 Euro's to replace. It's a common problem now.

What's your annual mileage OP ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 120 ✭✭Attreu

    Thanks for the replies guys.

Annual Mileage is about 25k miles. I do a good bit of UK driving to see Family.

Frank Black - been looking at that very car on Car Giant. There is also an estate with slightly higher mileage.

bob1977 - Jag XF is nice, are these reliable?

Anan1 - Just really looking for a step up in Vehicle. and ISOFIX.

Re Tax: I want a car with at least a decent chance of resale, which I can't see being good with €1500 + Tax (e.g Merc CLS) so I've set the limit on €750.

If your in the uk a lot I'd be looking there. Audi vrt is generally undervalued slightly but am open to correction on this, just heard it from a couple of wheeler dealers I know

How about a '79 Ferrari and an old clapped out Audi 80?

    Only one option for me...

Skoda Superb Estate with loads of spec.

Pick up a 2010/11 one for that money.

    That's mad.
I've bought from Cargiant twice in the last 4 years.
Feel free to PM if you've any specific questions if you decide to buy from them.

If motor tax and resale is a concern then the early Jag XF would probably be ruled out as the motor tax on the 2.7 diesel is €1000-€1200 per year which is too much for most people. 3.0 diesel is a more respectable €750 per year and a better engine but I'd say they are out of budget.

You could try importing an Accord estate from the UK. Cheaper to buy second hand than over here and they have a decent loading area in the boot.

    Am I mad, I really don't like Jags ?

I'd much prefer the Accord ?

I like the Accord, a good mate has a great example of one. However from what I've seen of the XF the interior is a step above the Honda.

Think it might be the A6 in Frank Black's link. Frank I'll be in touch with a few questions, thanks for the offer.

Going to test drive a few cars in Dublin tomorrow to check the for size. I'll update as I go.

Skoda Superb's have been on the radar. Are the much bigger than the A6?

    Where are you based?
Check out the superb on commonsroadcars.ie

Little bit more than your budget but shows the kinda car you can get for that kinda money.

Heated leather seats, panaoramic roof, nav, elec. bootlid etc. it's the 1.6 tdi engine but they're available in 2.0 tdi too.

I have a strange fetish for them! Lot of car for the money.

Totally agree. I think the XF is a pisspoor attempt from Jaguar, but the UK media don't agree, wonder why....

hi i have just read this forum. i have been at car sales for 22 years now and i can tell a good one from bad. a jag is not a great idea as they are very unreliable and have a really bad residual value. an audi or vw diesel is a very good choice once it is serviced with a decent brand of oil and filters. also the jag is based on a ford mondeo chassis and other than the interior comfort, its nothing special

The XF is a brilliant car.

Can't believe people are comparing a Jag XF and an accord, the accord isn't even close to the same class as an XF.

It doesn't even make the autocar top five family saloons list

Never got the accord boards love in.

I bet you'd find a strong correlation between rankings and advertising revenue there!

But I agree, XF or Accord there's no comparison. XF all day long.

Both The XF and the Accord are both far superior to a Passat or Superb. The XF is a segment above the Accord but I'd rather the Accord all the same.

They aren't comparable imo. An accord is a rival for a passat etc while an XF is a rival for an BMW 5 series, Audi A6 etc. just look at the size of an XF, the engines and especially the quality if the interior.

Yes that is why I said that the XF is a segment above the Accord. Personally if I was spending €22k on a car I'd still rather an Accord for a variety of reasons.

Last 10 years and beyond if cared for and you will have change in your pocket to tax it for 5 years.

an avensis is built in england. im connected to an engine rebuilding company and the most common engine rebuilt is a toyota vvti petrol and d4d diesel ! buy an audi or wv. they are reliable, economical, spacious, comfortable, they look good and you will for sure get an excellent trade in price or used car value. jaguars cost a fortune on reliability issues and in ireland they are not popular so resale value will be very low

    What's good about it?

IMO -much like many jags of this era I think inside and outside its dated very badly, pre 08 cars had the 2.7TDV6 which wasn't particularly quick, not economical either, was quite a smooth engine though. It's not big inside the rear is very cramped and while the interior was nice originally now it looks incredibly dated, IMO of course.

i agree 166. if you want a car that feels like your sitting in your armchair while being careful going through tight bends then the jag xf is your man!

Definitely not correct; the XF chassis was carried on from S Type and is based on Lincoln LS/Ford Thunderbird chassis - it is not shared with MOndeo. The XF is after all a rear wheel drive car unlike the Mondeo and its relation the X Type.

Firstly I'm as big a fan of VW and Audi I was just asking the question as cars are meant to be driven not mollycoddled.

To answer your question every make of car has realisable cars and unrealiable cars nowadays its not as clear cut to say car make is overall is realisable or unrealiable.

They are an absolutely beautiful looking car on the outside and are luxury on the inside. You are off your head saying its dated. The 3.0 litre diesel is very good and the one to go for.

I was over taken by a 131 reg XF yesterday and it reminded me of what a lovely car thy are.
