I don't know who broke you but I'm glad they did. :D

Should be good or Pheonic Park meet then? :)

Yeah it would be nice, I don't mind making Dublin-based meets really.

Just wait and see what date is decided.

Started working on the brushed metal look centre console.

While taking the pieces off I discovered good and bad news about my car.
Good news - I have a cup holder (unlike Bora #1)
Bad news - It doesn't work

Anyway, getting this look is more time consuming than you might think.
    Here's what I started with:

And here's what it looks like now...

So some of ye may know that I have resprayed the front panel from the Peugeot 206 - which was all chipped, was in a bad way if I'm honest. Brace yourselves for lots of pics (sorry for those of ye on phones :P)

Here are a few pics of beforehand.

Sprayed (4 coats in total - ran the first time so had to sand back and give lighter coats)

Lacquer on (needed a good few coats to get it shiny - again it ran once so had to sand back some spots)

Ya was very rough before hand, would look crap if it wasn't all sanded back and level.

    Yep rattle can job indeed!

You should sprayed the surround of that cubby hole too when you were doing the grille :)

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,845 ✭✭✭Noccy_Mondy

Would you do the bit around the vents and hazards?

WOuld ruin it imo, the look he is going for is the .:R32 brushed alu look, those are the only pieces that are brushed aluminium in the .:R

Cubby hole? Is that the thing above the head unit?

Not sure about that yet. Depends where the flow takes me. :)

a little sooner than i had hoped to be dropping so much money on the corolla. €185 for a new rad, thermostat and coolant. that's my Friday morning sorted.

was kind of a vicious circle. needed a new rad and i didn't want to put old coolant into the new rad so i got new coolant. then it seemed a shame to use the old thermostat with a new rad and new coolant so i got a new thermostat. suppose i'm just lucky i didn't buy a water pump too.

Maybe it's the pics, but it doesn't look very... brushed alu.

No because it's not lol. The R32 came with brushed alloy pieces, years ago after a tip off from a friend with a passat with similar trims pieces i discovered if you sanded and polished them you were left with a very similar effect to that of the R pieces, the look can vary depending on the sanding job.

I went with a progressively finer grit and then lacquered and sanded one last time..

When you put it side by side with the genuine R pieces then there is no compare but as a cheap DIY mod its cool and looks a lot better than the standard net optic trim in the Bora.

Couldn't you spray the pieces with aluminium plasti dip?

Alternatively if you use emery paper - with time and perseverance you will get the brushed and shiny look, takes a lot of sanding though.

There wasn't much brushed alu plastidip available in 2007 :D

Well maybe not the brushed bit :P

What material is that surround made out of anyway? Just realised what use is emery paper going to be if the surface isn't aluminium already, doh. I wonder at myself sometimes

It's just metal with a plastic backing. I can't even remember what type.

Those look great, but look nothing like what Gvidor has done.... like I said, may be the quality of the pics, but by comparison his looks shít.

I think Sh!t might be a bit harsh now, i think a little more sanding with a finer grit paper and the will look fine.
