car was over heating earlier after the car wash, had to pull in about 4/5 times before eventuallt making it home, tried it again just now and the fan isn't kixking in,waterpump was changed 7k ago, could it be the switch?all fuses are ok.

You checked that there is no oil in coolant and no white stuff on the oil cap. Although if the fan isn't kicking in then check fuse wiring to the fan.

Plenty of coolant in it,no stuff around the oil cap,i'll leave it settle overnight and try it again tomorrow, maybe the power hose has dampened the wiring around the fan,i didn't wash the engine bay, however upon trying it again in the last hour it took about 15-20 minutes before the needle went over the half way point,no leaks from it either, earlier on though one pipe was cold the other hot, thermostat?

I'd say it's a thermostat, my car had the exact same problem

I'd hazard a guess to say water ingressed into the fuse box area. Did they power wash the engine bay by any chance?

I done it myself, didnt wash the engine bay but put the hose up close to the bottom of the bumper where the fan is housed behind it :(

Whatever you do don't drive it and let it boil ie hit 100 degrees c or you'll be in trouble.

MK4 1.4 engines are 16 valve and ignition leads don't look like that. :P

I don't recommend getting a MK4 with a 1.4 engine though. Underpowered and almost all of them have emission problems.

I'd honestly just get a haynes manual and a thermostat and away you go, it wont hurt to change it anyways :)

I HATE that underpowered argument. I had one for 2 years and clocked 30k miles on it and it was never "underpowed". My mother had one for 5 years and my brother has been through too. They are a small family hatch, not a race car.

I don't know if there are any polo fans on here but for those of you who don't know, there was never a GTi version of the 9n polo (just the 9n3). I really like the look of the GTi grilles and wanted to know what it would look like on a 9n. I found it impossible to find an after market honeycombe grille online that would fit (9n3 ones are the same shape but the 9n one goes up around the slam panel/bonnet catch so arent interchangeable) so I decided to try out a red stripe on my standard grille. I know you can get trim tape/pinstriping that can be used but I cheaped out and used a bit of insulating tape. The idea was just to see how the grille looks with the stripe and if its worth doing properly. What do you guys think?

    Z7QXkVf.jpg

Its not durable and looks silly up close but I like the look even without the honeycombe. I have only been able to see 6mm pinstriping on amazon/halfords - has anybody got any other ideas that would give a good finish up close?

Also, I'm thinking of a set of these, any opinions? I love the audi s3 in the same colour as my car and think I could pull off chrome mirrors :P

Despite being in NI I'm not mad for the super felt (german plates, chicken wire grills, rs8s and badging up) look and I dont really go in for the euro look either (stanced, lower than a snakes bollix, debadged and flushed). Not really interested in making a GTi rep either - my plan is for just a few OEM inspired touches, maybe back 3 tints, shark fin aerial and getting rid of the lexus lights that came on the rear (possibly go for 9n3 lights). So go on ahead and diss my plans or at least take some of the heat of GvidoR now that theres another youngfella badly modding a VW on the scene - what can I say, I'm a lurker :P

whatever is causing the problem I cannot be certain now,my understanding is if the thermostat is gone then the heat in the car will be poor or non existant, there is plenty of heat there, hopefully its only wet wiring

    Pic doesn't work :)

    fixed now

The other thing I was planning is cooler bulbs for sidelights/headlights and to put LEDs in the map light and rear number plate light etc...
Do nightbreakers the phillips xtremevision and similar give as white a light as factory xenons/HIDs? The car looks fresh enough for a 2002 and I really think that whiter lights would make it look younger again

Funny, I was in Ratoath on Sunday and saw a 9n with a GTI grille and thought that was odd....

  • Registered Users Posts: 609 ✭✭✭jumbone

What did they do about the semi circle in the bonnet?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,985 ✭✭✭✭dgt

VW badge was still there, with a small GTI badge to the left

Hmm cant have been a 9n3 one bodged in then. Was it honeycombe or just a red stripe and the standard slats?

I know its all banter but sometimes when I read car forums its as if there is a consensus on what is the only right way to mod your car which is a bit ridiculous considering its modding we're talking about!

I'll be honest, as it was coming the other way while I was going the other way it's a miracle I copped it! Having said that, it didn't look like slats. Chances are it was honeycomb.

You could base it off a Lupo GTI grille....?
