In my situation regular oil changes gave nothing.

Given that the bearing fails I dont think oil changes would make a difference.

Given that the bearing fails I dont think oil changes would make a difference.

Most plastic housed bearings only fail if the oil goes low. Trafic/primastar is a classic example

The oil was never low in the gearbox.
It happens in a lot of toyotas that this goes.
The replacement bearings are modified so obviously toyota saw an issue and redesigned them.

Maybe at higher speeds etc it's overheating. Plastic housed are a bollix

Honestly I just think that plastic just wears out eventually. It is not that big of a deal. It makes a noise and gives plenty warning so tis alright.

Those bearings going bad is a well know issue on mk2 avensis.

Got around to tidying up the engine bay today , still a few more bits im waiting on , new aluminium rad , hoses , ngk leads etc

yeah nothing wrong with it !! iv a cold air feed going to the engine so temp never gets high enough to activate the fan :eek: was just weird as iv never seen the fan to come on once in the last year haha

Not only avensis, I'd say all FWD toyotas can be affected - most of them share gearboxes.

To be honest I thought the price was fair enough. Two other gearbox specialists wanted 550 and 600 for the same job. Parts are guaranteed for 100000 miles

I really doubt those bearings would survive 100000 miles of my style driving BTW.

The lad who put them in guaranteed them for 100000 miles. It is a modified bearing.

Box replacement in indy garage nearby (decent lads) is 100 more. And that reconditioned one still waits until I kill the one I've in now.

Bought Guide spray for 6 euro in Halfords - fantastic stuff!

Tidied up my exhaust pipes, painted the spare tub/exhaust and paint all the grills black again, really freshen up the car. I had a spare grill so I painted it all black, I think it looks pretty dam good. Need to get some pressed plates.

got a new air and oil filter and a chain tensioner from micksgarage

old spring is much shorter than the new tensioner, was definitely causing the noise.


new air filter in


dropped the sump, only a bit of solidified oil, luckily no tensioner guide pieces.



all cleaned up and new sump gasket and bolts installed.

then some nice new oil and filter , no more chain rattle and the engine is smooth as silk even on a cold start.

got some car stuff

TTE front strut brace. it appears not to be rigid but to have a piston in it, which i assume defeats the purpose of the item somewhat, not that it probably does much bar looks anyway.




also a TTE front splitter. it was killing me that toyota gave the T3 cars the rear spats and side skirts but left the front end bare. this is a pre-facelift splitter which takes a bit of fitting but should look good.


this is the splitter style.


also got an arm rest from a Japanese run-x model. it is velour (or something :P) covered and splits into two compartments. the original one doesn't split and is just hard plastic.




needless to say that at this stage i needed to get a few TTE badges one of my first ever ebay purchases :pac:



have a few more bits sorted and one or two more i'm still looking for. want to have her looking well for her 150th

well i can't compress it with my two hands.

it's more the fact that a piston implicates the potential for movement, whereas a rigid bar pretty much guarantees none, which is what you would want in a strut brace i'd assume. they just made it more complicated and less functional. but it looks cool so i don't care :pac:

On looking up it does the same thing but with less harshness

Got the damage to the boot door fixed over the weekend.

Before taken when the boot was damaged.


A few after shots taken today




A front one too while I'm at it.


Delighted with the job overall. Basically just a complete respray of the boot. All the dents were hammered out no fillers used. A good match with the existing paint too I think.

Next on the list a few new tyres and it probably needs a pollen / cabin filter too which I will get next time I'm off work.

Looks a good job how much did it cost you? Had a similar job prices at 150 the other day

Cost 200 which I though was very good. Kind of a friend of a friend did it. By the time you strip/ prepare the old paint off the boot. Sort out all the dents hammer them out the respray it and lacquer it put back all the badges. I don't think they were making too much out of the 200. 150 seem really cheap are you sure they are actually respraying the whole panel for that and not just using a bit off filler and touching up the paint. I'd imagine if I walked into a a repair shop where I didn't know the person is be paying a good bit more than 200 for that repair but then I don't really know either. Maybe prices are just good at the minute.

Na it's a friend of the family kind of thing aswell, just wondering if it was a good price. He made a fine job of yours for 200
