If it is just a coil sitting in there on its own, remove the shock and the anti roll bar and lever down on the wishbone, that should give it enough room to come out

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,001 ✭✭✭LawlessBoy

Or depending on the set up. If you put a jack under the rear arm. Unbolt it from the hub and then release the jack slowly theyre easy to take out. Thats usually how i do the rears.

Those old discs looked perfect from what I could see FN. Nice to have all new all the same. :)

Dont forget to do the fluid while you're at it! :D

There was actually a big lip on the discs, pads weren't the worst though to be fair! Fluid will be done a too alright!

The lip looks tiny in the pictures! Pity that doesn't equate to good brake performance :pac:

It was very noticeable anyway, but I'd also much rather be on new brakes than 6 year old rusted crap :pac:

I was saying recently that I was going to do a couple of jobs to the little 156. I did do it! just never got around to posting it here :D:o

    Engine without cover:

    Engine Cover:

    Engine with cover:

    IMG_4779_zpswqcehiqa.jpg

    :D

As I said weeks ago when I actually did it, the cover was missing the clips it was supposed to have so I made up some washers out of some old plastic I had and cut a few bolts to size. They were also painted black :)

I prefer it without the cover TBH. :o:o Then again I lament the loss of the sight of an actual engine under the bonnet so common these days.

I agree in some ways but IMO being able to see engines should only be for engines that are made to be seen! Like the V6 in the 166 for example.

The Diesel lump in the 156 looks like the back of a washing machine without the cover:D

This time I was arsed to take photos :)

I serviced the car last night. Air filter was fine so I've left it for now. So all that was changed was the diesel filter and oil

Such a handy car to service :)

Diesel filter: remove the silver CDI cover (2x4 hex bolts)
    28891080034_c277bff3ef_b.jpg

Pop off the 2 pipes, twist off the ring and pop the whole lot out
    28891079044_f333d3d789_b.jpg

Daz really does make those whites bright again One new filter later
    29407176442_d3bb4f8b2d_b.jpg

These cars have no self primer, brim the housing or crank it for ages (not recommended)

I pissed around taking pics and priming the housing, the entire timeframe to change that filter was about 10 minutes

Oil + filter: it was dark, bear with me.
    Filter
    28891077454_99ec0afa28_b.jpg

You have the room to use a breaker bar, or a long spanner
    29515918775_8be20cc25c_b.jpg

No need to jack it up. All accessible from the top :)
    29435703231_85a8d94353_b.jpg

No pics of the filter but it has 3 o rings, a pic will take them off without breaking the plastic housing.

Finally, 6.5 litres of oil (yes, I only have 5 in this pic)
    29407173442_f856ca79f0_b.jpg

All good for another few weeks/months :)

Sorted the ABS lights in the 525i:

    IMG_20160907_203448_zpsipqil9ct.jpg

Replaced the lower intake boot and the rear discs and pads on the 528i and what a pain in the ass those brakes were! Self levelling suspension eats up any room to play!

Fitted some eBay led panels in place of the interior lights in the cruiser.. bit of light for the loadspace for the winter. Being a part-time village idiot I forgot to take a before for comparison, but it's a massive difference

I had replaced my ABS sensor in the rear drivers side wheel about 6 months ago, and started to have intermittent warning lights about it in the last month. I thought maybe the new sensor was just crap and wasn't reading correctly. Went to take a look and found the sensor to not be fully connected :o. I was a dope putting it in, and didn't clip it all together securely enough. Glad it's fixed now though!

Oil/Filter/Air Filter/Plugs change using Petronas 5W-30 and Bosch Plugs, badly needed as you can tell by the hot chocolate oil:

    New on top
    IMG_20160909_180040_zpsxo7zj3dg.jpg

Coolant change next, fix the bust door and must replace the gas struts in the boot. New intake upper boot ordered too as that's knackered.

Looking good Foxhole, great to see the old girl brought back to life. You going to polish those headlights or replace with Angel Eyes?

Cheers! I'll be doing both, I have a set of angel eyes that came with it but one needs rebuilding/replacing but I'll also be polishing those ones in the meantime :)

Got a small bit of time today to change the balljoint on my C220.

The symptoms: slight sway on canted roads and a nasty thumping over rugged terrain. Considering the front was overhauled not too long ago (new drag link, race bearings, suspension and springs) this was the last part in the puzzle. Real world has taught me a lot.

    The part
    29548737572_6e46ac7c54_b.jpg

It's an unusual looking joint with a locating nub trying to big itself up beside the bigger bottom of the joint (which as you'll see in a bit, is rather irritating for such a small nub)

Tools needed include a 22mm spanner, 22mm socket, 2 jacks and a hammer. That's all. Not a huge amount of toolery but the right tools for the job at hand are better than some small makey uppy crappy set got at the local market for a fiver and think they're the bees knees because they think its sooo expensive even though they asked for... Whoops, rambled on a bit :P

Moving on! 2 minutes after that photo was taken
    29659924325_5ed7b2bc18_b.jpg

The joint is ready to come out. You jiggle the hub a bit and it manouvers out :)

But! The locating nub likes to stick in the hub.... It took about 5 minutes to remove, which from the other side of the car looked like I was doing something obscene as I wrangled furiously, only to pull it out eventually with a twisted tip (could you imagine the shame of telling someone you.... Um.... And twisted it into an eejit in the process :D:D:D) Why must such a small nub create such a big pain for all involved...

The nub with the twisted tip
    29548732282_9eb6cbce15_b.jpg

I greased up the joint with copper grease, for the next time it has to come out it should be that bit easier. Clean up the surfaces well, jobs a good one :)
    29659906125_4c08ccbf68_b.jpg

Wheel on, quick test drive. Problem gone

Decided to also check my oil before I set off, I hadn't checked it since the morning after I changed it
    29548708032_038f9e0d8b_b.jpg

    Never disappoints :)

I was once told of an absolute eejit whom after about 2 modules of a mechanics course dropped out and knew it all... This special fella checked his oil by repeatedly dipping the stick about 20 times until he got "an average"

What kind of muppets are out there...

Changed a gearbox in my wifes Corolla. Not bad just time consuming.
Diff blew up and locked up totally, had to pull the drives to tow it back to repair it.

Had my Style 149s for the 740 refurbed over 2 years ago, but due to a combination of kerbing on my part and botched tyre fitting jobs, I decided to have them done again.

Got in touch with TJ in Donegal Powdercoating Services, who offered great service and communication throughout.
I sent the wheels up to him with DPD, along with a set of Continental Sport Contact 5s, which he agreed to swap the Vreds for.
Car up on stands for the week:

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,660 ✭✭✭Voodoomelon

Thanks, €380 inc VAT for 20s which is a great price. I paid for shipping, have an account.

Thats extremely good value, thats more of less what I paid for the 15s on the MR2 4 years ago. (think it was €320 at the time)

Mine are all good bar one which * ahem * I put a small (barely noticable) nick on a kerb :( ...light scratching a black board

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,660 ✭✭✭Voodoomelon

Bummer, not looking forward to the first mark myself!

With the sterling the way it was, think I paid close to €650 for x4 20s and x1 19 last time up north with Lester Engineering, some difference.

The plastic panel below my windscreen has irritated me too long. They go grey and scabby as a given with this model. So out with the pliers and swear jar…

The plastic clips that secure it are a thundering whoer to get out without breaking. They're very tight and after 18 years… So they all broke. I have put off doing this job as Honda want over six Euro per plastic clip and there are seven of them. Click here and go to No 25 if ye don't believe me. To be fair it's pretty bloody unbelievable. Oh and that's just the top clips, the bottom ones are over four quid each and can only be had in packets of 23. Sod that for a game of soldiers.

Many hours of digging through the interwebs and ebay I find third party ones that are identical(if anything superior plastic). Top and bottom types. Price? A tenner for the lot, including postage. And I have spares.

Then I tackled the panel itself. Carefully teased off the various attached rubber bits and bobs. After a cleaning, I left them soaking in some Autoglym rubber stuff. The panel was cleaned off with acetone and lightly etched for painting. A going over with some black semi gloss spray paint dried very quickly in our glorious indian summer. :)

All back together with new rubber seal(crazy money from Honda, 3 quid weatherstrip for the win) new windscreen sprayers from the Honda Jazz(misty baby!) and back on the car(after the area underneath was coated in anti corrosion wax).

    397008.jpg

    Result! :)

Bought this shock top for the civic as a reward for hitting 200k. It also might help it get through its last 2 year NCT. Hopefully.

    That's the easy part.

  • Registered Users Posts: 73,454 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

Just replaced shock top, hardest part was getting the trim off from under the windscreen.

Also got an aircon clutch relay for feck all from the scrappies, nicer than paying the €25+VAT Honda wanted. For a relay. Bandits.

Now have lovely freezing air and the car is NCT ready :)

Replaced my knackered Drop Links with new OE Lemforder units and new OE Lemforder Top Mounts on the 525, fixed my knocking issue :p will do the control arms and tie rods in the future.

    Connected to nothing:

    New:IMG_20160917_141043_zpswmmrumrz.jpg

Also replaced the MAF in the 525 and the 528 along with a new upper intake boot in the 528. Flushed the coolant, bled the coolant system and replaced the expansion tank cap in the 528 too so there's now plenty of pressure and heat.
