There was an interesting discussion on the Waterford City forum recently about Waterford's favourite radio station...

I'm happy to let you know that you've got another option for the next few months! We at TCR FM Tramore Community Radio have just begun our 4th temporary FM broadcasting license, operating from our studios at Queen Street, Tramore. We broadcast Thursday to Sunday 9am to midnight on 92.3 FM, http://tcrfm.ie and the TuneIn Radio app. Our brief is to provide a mixture of talk and music content of interest to our community, on an inclusive, voluntary and non-profit basis. The sporadic nature of our broadcasting is due to the fact that the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland allows us to broadcast for 100 days out of 365. We split those up as we see fit, subject to their approval. To be around for as long as possible, we broadcast only late in the week when there's more going on. We are hopeful of applying for a full time license in the near future.

Most of our presenters have no previous broadcasting experience, but are trained to FETAC Level 5 standard by former ABC presenter and South East Radio manager Clive Derek. We have a number of former pirate and/or semi-professional DJs who didn't take up full time broadcasting jobs when licensing was introduced in 1989. They include Paul Dower, Damian Egan, Colin Kennedy and Wiggy O'Conor. We also have a number of popular live venue DJs and sound engineers such as Paul Sheridan, Brian Gribben, Paul Flynn (formerly of FloMotion), Tom Dunne (Sons Phonetic), Shauna O'Brien, Bernie Cahill and Thor Zeller (Alpha Sounds). Many presenters are well known in the community such as our Manager Garrett Wyse, Librarian Tracy Dunne, Tramore Credit Union's Joe Mernagh, Revival Tramore Musical Society's Martha Mernagh, Klub Muzik's Mark Waters, Youth Reach's David Wade, Photographer Ciarán Conneely, Environmentalist Alan Walshe, Singer/Actors Dónal O'Flynn and Conor Clancy, Musician Fran Sarsfield (from rockabilly outfit The Nervous Breakdowns), former Town Councillor and Head of Rinnashark Sea Angling Club James McCartan, "The Tenor from Fenor" John Hayes (brother to Richie and son of Dick), Charity Shop Manager Carmel Hogan, Driving Instructor and Tramore Toastmasters' Norman Graham and Tramore GAA PRO Michael Crowley.

We have a range of talk programmes covering local affairs, culture, sport, the environment, lifestyle, long form interviews, stories/poetry, a what's on guide, topical issues, entertainment, local history and the Irish language.

The variety of our music is not dictated from management, any show submission gets a shot and the successful ones remain. We play Reggae, Metal, Showtunes, Alternative/Indie, 40s, 50s ("Hop Music"), 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s, Rockabilly, Traditional, World, Funk, Soul, Local Music, Classical, Jazz, just a little current chart music and have 3 different types of Country! Two of those country shows are presented by well known performers Richie Halpin and Gabriel Murtagh, the third by popular former ABC DJ Billy Power.

See our schedule on http://tcrfm.ie and please connect with us on Facebook (http://facebook.com/tcrfm) and Twitter (@tcrfm).

New volunteers are always welcome and members of the public can drop in to see us at any time. We're collecting a few bob outside Supervalu all day today Saturday July 13th, so please give what you can :)

Is there a reason why TCR does not operate for the seven days and all year round. The reason I ask is other stations do. Youghal for example broadcast seven days a week but are not 24 hours. Some of their programmes are all-right but the majority of their music to put it mildly is crap and I am sure that it is turning people off. Another station is to be found in Cashel and can be picked up in parts of West Waterford. Their music choice is a little better than Youghal's but they don't cater for Waterford (I am sure they don't have to) something Youghal does. They have items that interest people in the Tallow, Knockanore, Clashmore, Ardmore and even into Old Parish and Ring areas and often mention what is happening in these areas. I have at times tried to tune into your station but I keep forgetting you are not on for the first half of the week or else the station seems to have gone off the air altogether, meaning I tend to stick to WLR the whole time.
