Late licence at Christ Church Cathedaral! 01:30 on Sunday morning, 14th July: gang of around 30 people sitting around a couple of tables on Christ Church Cathedral grounds, being served pints at half-past-one in the morning!

Really? I couldn't even get a pint at half-past-twelve! I'm the wrong flippin' religion - Catholic obviously isn't righteous enough!:-( (Actually, I'm no longer Catholic. I had the sense to "defect" (that's what the Catholic church calls it) a long time ago.)

I'd hardly call a skanger passing around cans to a bunch of drunks as "Being served"

These people didn't look like the kind that would appreciate being called scangers. This was proper black-shirted waiters, trays held at shoulder height, beer mats and all - and it wasn't pints of holy water either (unless holy water has a head on it).

Was there an event on there? They may have gotten a late licence for the night.

You know Christchurch isn't Catholic, right?

    Read the post again.

Ah, you're right, sorry. The schizophrenic Catholic/not Catholic bit confused me.

The Synod Hall to the west connected by the bridge the main building, where the Dublinia is located was an occasional nightclub with late licence venue during the early 90's.

There's a strange mix of religion and commerce at Christ Church Cathedral. I fully appreciate the need for fundraising and know that they take full advantage of the flow of tourists through the Cathedral by having a gift shop and cafe in the crypt and by charging for tours, but until I checked their website I didn't know that they also hire out the crypt for "events such as wedding receptions, launches, dinners, Christmas parties and lectures", some of which would normally involve alcohol consumption (unless they stipulate abstainers-only - which, given the events on Saturday night/Sunday morning, they clearly don't).

This throws up some very interesting moral questions. Isn't the crypt, as an integral part of the Cathedral, consecrated ground and, therefor, wholly unsuitable for the selling of alcohol? (The former Synod Hall is, at least, somewhat removed from the Cathedral. Was it ever consecrated ground anyway?) How does this blatant commercialism sit with the teachings of the Christian faith? I seem to remember from my forced indoctrination during my formative years that Jesus expelled the money changers from the Temple in Jerusalem, accusing them of turning the Temple into a den of thieves through their commercial activities. (Thank you, Wikipedia, for filling in the gaps.) Is the congregation fully aware of what goes on inside the Cathedral and how, in particular, do they feel about alcohol being served? I'd be very interested to hear from members of the Cathedral's congregation. And, finally, is this also happening in Catholic cathedrals in this country.

Without wanting to drag this thread off-topic even further... Have you ever been to Rome, Jerusalem, Lourdes, Knock? Selling pints in a hall adjacent to a cathedral is nothing compared to the blatant commercialism in those 'holy sites'.

Seriously though - if you wish to discuss the rights/wrongs of this - take it up in the Christianity forum.

I am shocked that you are complaining about Christchurch again.

It seemingly costs €4,000 a week for the upkeep of the cathedral. Afaik, they get no funding from the state due to it being a functional church and the separation of church and state.

Other than through 'blatant commercialism', how exactly do you feel they should raise the money necessary to keep the building functional?

Aha! Now the name rings a bell (pun intended).
So this is another bit of anti-Christchurch soapboxing.
Take your issues with the Cathedral elsewhere.
This forum will not be a vehicle for you to further your agenda.

    Closed.
