Are road races faster this year?

I keep an eye on the local road racing scene and times that would have got placed last year wouldn't see you in the top ten this year.
Is it just me or is the standard of road racing rising? and if so what is going on?
How would Irish road racing compare to other European countries?

I'm not up with what times are being run in the local races in Ireland anymore, but from switching to running in UK races a few years ago it was noticeable that I'd more often be getting much higher finishing positions. Just due to population size though there must be more people in the UK local road racing scene who are capable of running a sub XX in event YY, but people don't travel from one side of the country to the other as much just to win a bottle of wine and a pair of socks so often. I got the impression that the same people would travel about a lot more in Ireland to go to race and so you'd have the decent people always racing each other wherever you went and that probably goes some way to keeping the competition higher.
