    I'll just leave this here:

    Ha, that is brilliant!

I was looking for a job and then i found a job...and heaven knows I'm miserable now.

anyone who can write the above lyrics is alright by me.

added to that the sublime guitar of johnny marr, the vastly underrated bass of andy rourke and the unpretentious drums of mike joyce and you've got yourself some high grade tunes.

Andy Rourke is one of the best bass players of all time, hands down. Him and Marr were a magical combination.

Possibly my favourite song of all time.

there is only one question that needs answering. who has the most annoying way they move their lips to the noise playing in the background. morrisey or dylan?

Some young people are so conservative and looking a "bit of a joke" isn't limited to eighties casualties.

Yes, but the fans of 80s Indie Rock bands like The Smiths seem to have suffered the heaviest casualties. Awful, awful dress sense, terrible haircuts and a very maudlin outlook on life from years of listening to whining by Morrissey.

How do you know that they have a very maudlin outlook on life?

    The Smiths rule :)
Morrissey is a miserable git but he has a wonderful voice so we can forgive him for that

arguably the most influential band since the Beatles (at that time)
Didn't like them in their heyday but have a lot of time for them now.
Possibly the best Irish band of all time.
Morrissey has completely lost his way though.

    Personal experience.
How is it any different to a person listening to Tiesto and having a very maudlin outlook on life? It would depend on the person and their situation rather than what they listen to wouldn't you think?

Both Morrissey's parents are Irish. If he was a footballer, he would certainly be an Irish footballer ;)

Just because the lead singer's parents are Irish doesn't make it an Irish band, nor does it make Morrissey Irish.

Yeah, but Morrissey is a príck so we're not accepting him.

    Shyness can stop you
From doing all the things in life

I blame my 2 older brothers getting into the Smiths when growing up

I'm not so sure that Morrissey would choose to be one of us. Remember that controversy early in his solo career where he was pictured waving a Union Jack and singing some borderline racist lyrics.

    I love the Smiths BTW.

    Isn't he Robbie Keanes cousin.

    he is indeed

they are related through Robbie’s grandfather Thomas Nolan who was Morrissey’s father’s cousin

And Robbies family did not think this was important info to share with him! He only found out when Morrissey told him a few months ago.

I doubt Robbie Keane was ever big into The Smiths.

Look After Hours, The Smiths/ Morrissey are the best thing ever, Everyday going home I listen to the new tripe that's played on the radio and gladly switch over to the Smiths.

Is more of an elton John man.

Maybe a coming together off the back of morrissey's Keane song. But then Morrissey's parents are from round here, and Robbie was plucked from Crumlin utd across the road so it may be a Crumlin thing

I don't think this thread turned out the way OP planned. This should be the official Boards thread of The Smiths now.

Smiths lovers of the boards, unite and take over.

I had like a year of Smiths phase. are an important part of ones musical education

suck it up, then spit it out and move on... do not attempt to relate to a new generation of hipsters and their electronic smiths reworkings

I think they're great but it's dangerous to get overly obsessed with them. A friend of mine is also into those old 80s rockbands, like The Jam and The Smiths. It's a bit sad really. He's got two kids but he still acts and dresses like a teenager even though he's well into his 40s and grey as a mule. White Adidas Superstar trainers or Doc Martens, Beatle haircut with that weird thing where you grow it down on the sides to look like you have sideburns, mouldy green parka jacket, affected Manchester accent...

It's a bit of a joke when he meets up with his friends at the Free State Soccer League matches and they're all dressed the same, like none of them have moved on since their version of the 80s. Honestly, it looks like a Hallowe'en party.

I don't mind lads doing this.

It makes a change from lads going straight to cords and a blazer via the school gates.

    Yes.
    Morrissey, Maher, Rourke and Joyce.
They all had Irish mothers and fathers.

There is no Maher in The Smiths.

EDIT: Actually, it seems Johnny Marr was born as John Martin Maher. Regardless, calling them an Irish band and then trying to further that point is a bit weird, considering they clearly aren't. Unless you're being facetious.

I love The Smiths, and Morrissey is the most consistently good performer I've ever seen. Most people I know (friends, family, partner) scoff at my love of them and him, but I don't care.

    One of my favourites:

I love the production values of that whole album! I can't wait to see Johnny Marr at Electric Picnic.

They toured the old showband circuit here so respect due. Oases claimed to be manc irish but never went out on a limb like that, whilst draped in u know what.

Johnny Marr (born John Martin Maher)

I don't see the confusion with considering them an Irish band at all
As I said, all born to Irish parents.
    Why not?

Because none of them are actually Irish? The band was not started in Ireland? They all identify as English? I've never even seen it purported until now, honestly, and it's extremely strange.

They are a Manchester band through and through. Trying to label them as Irish is very, very odd.

Yes. Strange and annoying. Completely unfounded and makes no sense.

They're 100% English, with 7 of their 8 parents happening to be of Irish origin.

Ah the old Irish habit of claiming everything that has any sort of Irish connection. Of course this means that Oasis are Irish and Aphex Twin is Irish as well
