Im a fifth year student and Im thinking about courses to do in college but cant make up my mind.I am big into biology but I am not doing chemistry for my leaving and maths isn't my greatest subject although I will definitely be doing honours for the leaving. Im asking anyone who is doing any of these courses to just give me some info like how much physics would be involved in the courses and if my lack of chemistry knowledge will be a problem going into these courses. Thanks in advance!
    DN200 BBB- biological,biomedical and biomolecular
    DN440-Biomedical Health and life science

I've just finished my first year in science in UCD, and you'll be glad to hear you can avoid physics completely - that's what I did anyway! I went in through the BBB stream with a view to studying zoology, but ended up taking a few chemistry modules along the way to keep my options open. At the minute, all 1st year science students must do a maths subject in each of their first two semesters - linear algebra in term 1 and calculus in term 2. There is one mandatory chemistry module for BBB students which you'll take in term 2. If you haven't done chemistry before you can do an introductory module in 1st year. Best thing about the chemistry modules is that there is a huge amount of continuous assessment, so as long as you work hard in labs you'll be flying!

You don't have to do physics in 1st year if you don't want to, but if you want to study neuroscience or physiology in 2nd year you must have either done physics for the LC or taken introductory physics in 1st year.

If you're interested in Biomedical science but don't want to specialise in 1st year then BBB is the way to go. There is a mandatory BioMed module for all BBB students in 1st year, which made me choose it as one of my options for next year!

I'd definitely recommend UCD science, though. We've a fancy new building and everything! :P

Although you can specialise in biomed , do you know if it qualifies you to be a medical scientist? I have heard that you must do a specialised biomed degree from year 1 to be qualified.

I'm not 100% sure about the medical scientist thing, but you will have a specialised degree by the time you finish. You do a bit of most things in 1st year, then choose specific subjects in 2nd year. At the end of the 4 years you can either have a degree in one subject or a joint-major degree in 2 subjects, depending on what you want.

do you have to do a " bit of most things" in 1st year? if you already know the exact stream you want to go down, can you start from day one on that? Also is there limited places on some modules, do you have to get your choices in early to get what you want?

From what I experienced anyway, most people end up doing a bit of everything. I went in through BBB but still ended up going maths and chemistry. The only people who don't seem to do everything are the MPS students, but they can obviously do some biology modules etc. if they want.

There are really only limited places on some of the modules you choose for electives - languages in particular seem to be very competitive. Most science modules seem grand, though, and the vast majority of them could probably take half the class year if the demand was there!

Thats great to hear :), Physics would be the route I want to go. Cant wait to start :) Can you literally do any module in the university as electives as long as there is no timetable clashes?

Some have pre-requisites, basic requirements or rules such as, if you did modules x you can't do module y (these are usually because the content is too similar). Other that that, you can pick what you want. Doesn't mean you'll get a place though - some are in high demand and get randomly allocated.
