There's not rating them highly and then not rating them at all. Any reasoning behind your opinion to share?

To be honest I hope that Galway do give them a good game- went to college and worked in Galway so have always had a soft spot for them- but they have been awful for a while now and I'm sure there is pride there but pride is useless without the right temperament.

Pride is also not much good when you are extremely lacking in talent!

Not lacking in talent. Have won 4 u-21 all Ireland's since 2004 so talent is not an issue. Bad management seems to have been an issue but people from Galway would know best.

I think it is a mixture of both to be honest. Some of our current players really are not that good at all. While I am unsure that the management team are picking our best players.....

They have had a lot of feted players who I don't think are much good consistently. Armstrong, Bradshaw, Bane, Bergin (retired) all had big reputations but never took hold of many games. Seems like a team lacking "men". Paul Conroy is one to keep an eye on though.

Conroy is our only player who can honestly claim to be having a good year this year. But he is being played at midfield and is probably better as a forward.

I seriously doubt Galway will beat Armagh.

Should Tyrone and Cavan win, will Seanie be having regrets? Tyrone should win, but you'd have to tip Derry in the other one. As to Mayo, they definitely do have an issue with finals. On their day Mayo can be great. Other days they can be woeful.

It was always said about the two great powers of Connacht that Galway perform in Croke Park and Mayo don't. Mayo have just 3 All-Irelands, the last in 1951, and since then they have appeared in 7 finals, losing 6 and drawing one. After their 1951 win, they didn't appear in the final again until 1989, so those 7 finals are in the modern era. Obviously they were comfortably beaten by Kerry in 1997, 2004 and 2006. They did beat Kerry in the 1996 semi-final and should have won the All-Ireland that year against Meath. The 1996 team was better than the 1997 team. Going back to 1989, that was a final they could have won. After scoring a great goal in that game they went quite a while without scoring and so failed to build on the momentum and it was Cork that won Sam.

In fairness Mayo have had some great performances in Croke Park, like their two semi-finals against Dublin and their quarter final against Cork in recent years. In parts of the noughties a friend of mine talks of the triangle of Mayo could not beat Kerry, Kerry could not beat Tyrone and Tyrone could not beat Mayo. When they play well, they play really well and when they don't, they do that in style too. At times there seems to be a "kick the ball badly wide" gene in Mayo players. Consistency seems to be their problem. Back to back wins over big opponents seems to be a problem. Even within matches they sometimes have a problem maintaining good periods. They started badly in last year's final as they did in 2006, but fought back by half time in both cases, though they could not maintain it.

I would love to see Mayo win an All-Ireland. If they could perform to their potential in a run of matches, they could achieve that. There is no one to fear for them. They could have Donegal in a semi-final, which would be interesting, and could then face Kerry or Dublin in the final should other results go in that manner. They won't fear Dublin and if they can get over their issue with seeing a Kerry jersey, who knows what could happen. They have the potential to beat anyone, though the same can be said of a number of teams that are still left, so Mayo are not the favourites. No matter who they play, there is always that niggle of doubt as to whether they will perform. If their own county is not to win it, more than any other county I don't think anyone would begrudge them finally winning an All-Ireland again. We shall see what happens. Chances are they won't make it, but our own counties aside, we can live in hope.

Finally a chance to see where Galway really are at, although I think we all know the answer. On current form, I'd expect them to be absolutely bet out the Pearse Stadium gate by half time. Hopefully the lads pull together and for once in their lives pull a half decent performance out of the fire. Expecting the worst though. Could be over after 20 minutes.

Would love to see Galway competitive again. Good honest football folk who are generally more gracious in victory and defeat than one of their provincial neighbours that shares a name with a condiment.

What ever happened with the idea of getting rid of 6 day turn around for losing provincial finalist

Every year it's brought up as a disadvantage on the team that looses a provincial final, every year we hear something is being done about it and then they just go and schedule it in.

Ulster and Connaught losers will play again the following weekend, while Cork have 3 weeks between games.

Surely it cannot be that hard to schedule so that this does not happen.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,001 ✭✭✭✭Flukey

The 6 day turnaround is a bit of an old chestnut and more made of it than there should be. The Dublin hurlers played 5 weekends on the trot recently. Because they won Leinster it was said it was due to match practice. Had they lost, it would have been blamed on them being too tired. Teams that lose after a long gap have it put down to lack of match practice and if they win it is because they are fresh. So it is turned to suit the scenario. The 6 day turnaround is a red herring and only an issue when the team loses. 6 days is plenty of time. They may be professionals, but other sports can turn around in much shorter times. 6 days should be enough for any GAA player, and quite often it is. Add 24 hours on, which shouldn't make much difference at all, and there are no complaints.

But it's in relation to the losers of the provincial final that it is a problem, it's not a problem as such to a team that is in the qualifiers already.

Regardless of what some will tell you the provincial championship is a big deal with most if not all teams

To loose it and then be expected to get back on track within 6 days has proven to be a big ask for most teams.

Spot on - there is a world of a difference between playing on consecutive weekends when you are winning and picking yourself up from losing a provinicial final - that generally means a lot to the team involved and going out and playing the next weekend in a qualifier is a big ask.

Have to say I am very surprised - not to say nervous - at how many people appear to be very confident about an Armagh victory. We've been very pleased as to how things have gone in our last two games, but the reality is that the opposition did not offer much resistance. That has left many up here asking the question as to how good we really are - Saturday will give a greater understanding of the answer, and while many are hopeful of victory, everyone feels that we will be up against it.

Its very hard to know the true Armagh - poor against Cavan but Cavan were better than a lot give credit for. Demolish two of the bottom teams in Ireland but never tested defensively. Armagh were ok in the league and beat Galway well - Armagh lost a few but they were usually tight enough games.

Galway - humiliated by Mayo, poor league - some awful performances. Traditionally poor in the qualifiers - one of the worst records.

All this points to an Armagh win and even if Armagh win well the pundits (esp Sunday game) will point to all this about Galway and still question Armagh - which btw is not a bad thing for Armagh at all - the longer ye stay in it and under the radar the better for ye..

Ironically Galway seemed to raise it for the bigger teams in the league, apart from against Armagh when they had very little to play for, and thus got a bad beating. The goal threat ye possess is worrying, although Finian Hanley is a fine full back. If Armagh nullify Paul Conroy, wherever he's playing, ye win, simple as. If we are still in it at half time we may have a chance as, for once, we've finally came out the right side of two tight games. It all points to an Armagh win however. Tradition counts for nothing when it's one of the worst Galway teams in living memory.

James Morgan coming back in improves the Armagh defence significantly, although the defence hasn't been put under pressure. Same time and same temperature as last week, let's hope for some of the same performance.

Mini shock on the cards in Salthill. Galway 1-4 to 3 points up after 25 minutes. 4 points apiece in the Derry - Cavan game.

Long way to go yet. I remember thinking the same when they read out that Louth were beating Kildare at half time in Breffni last week too and look how that ended.
