Can't wait. Wonder how many 300+ yard irons we will see with the fairways being so burnt up.

Tee times for rounds 1 and 2 are here http://scores.theopen.com/TeeTimes.aspx

The Group for 300+ yard irons is out at 8:44 (Watson, Colsaerts & Johnson).

I think Shane Lowry is out at a nice time and with good players (Cabrera Bello and Curtis). Could it be his year?

Hoping Phil can make it 2 wins in a row.

Hope Woods or Mickleson win it.

Hope the place is burnt brown and plays tougher than the US Open did. Watched the Scottish Open yesterday and flicked over to the John Deere Classic afterwards, was like watching paint dry in comparison to links golf.

Cant wait, my favourite major by a mile. Going over for first 2 rounds, really like the look of the draw for opening 2 days :)

Heading along to the Saturday for this, tell me, would getting the train or driving be better? Thinking of going from 8am until 3pm or so and beating the rush.

Has anyone much experience of the Open travel (not just Muirfield), I'm living in Edinburgh so traffic notwithstanding it should be 30 mins travel either way.

Not too worried about drinking so will happily avoid and drive.

Faldo, Watson and Couples will be able to tee off while Watson, Colsaerts & Johnson are waiting to hit their 2nd shots

Train surely better, traffic will be murder. Car parks 15 quid so you might as well spend it on the train (14.40 return). Trains are going to Drem with shuttle then to the course. Train journey is only 15/20 mins from Waverley station.

Over in Florida at the minute and the golf channel are already all over The Open, live feeds of the caddies out marking the course etc. In other news saw a lad shoot a 59 in the web.com tour yesterday and the LPGA was low scores too.
Ha, just seen a golf Ireland advert, can't beat all the skiddely iddely music in the background

Not sure about that, Freddy would bash one onto Bubba's head, he can match the young lads still.

If they were playing fourballs they could have thrown Quiros in there as well and it would have been really fun.

Train every day of the week.

I've been to three before and we've taken the train each time. Don't expect to get a seat though.

You won't have a hope of getting a car near, finding a spot and getting out in time.

There will be a shuttle bus from the train station to the course. They run it to perfection over there.

Oh and you won't avoid the rush. There will always be people on the go. There are going to be 50/60,000 people there after all.

I'm really jealous of you. I'm hoping to get to the weekend golf next year. I'm actually going over to England tomorrow night but won't be able to get up to Edinburgh in time. I'll be all right for the Royal Liverpool next year. Definitely going to have to take a visit back up to St. Andrews in '15. There's nothing better than an Open in St. Andrews.

Thanks for the replies guys, had the car park booked for a tenner, but I'll happily forego if the train is easier.

Looking forward to it, first live tournament I've been to!

Make sure to buy the hand-held radio just inside the front gate. It's about £10 but it's the best money you'll spend all weekend, and that includes the train ticket.

Tune it in to BBC Radio 5 and you'll get a brilliant discussion about the tournament and the day's play. You'll be listening to experts discussing the difficulty of a putt that you are standing beside. It's a surreal experience.

The radios themselves are very good. My dad bought one about four years ago and he used it at the recent Kilkenny/Tipperary match.

Wear golf shoes if you have them. It'll help you to get a good grip when climbing up the side of a bank.

Also, dress for every kind of weather. It is highly likely that in the space of an hour you may go from wearing a t-shirt to having waterproofs on before going back to your t-shirt. As such, make sure that the waterproofs are light and can be taken off easily and quickly. It is links golf and it is on in Scotland after all.

Interesting to see how Muirfield will play, seen some pics of the rough and it looks brutal, course isn't extremely long....all depends on the wind or lack thereof.

I recall the scoring being pretty good for 3 days in 2002, except for the Saturday when a storm blew in and Tiger shot 81 and Monty 84!

Great advice. I am going over Wednesday night for the Golf on Thursday and have hired a car as I need somewhere to keep the suitcase Thursday but I think that I will park in the train station and travel in and out that way as I don't want to get stuck in traffic for 2hrs.

if its the same type of radio as the match referee radio you get at rugby internationals you should be able to tune in on Fm on your phone.
Dont know if they allow phones though, and dont know if it will be on MW or if 5live or 5 live extra. that might be on the bbc website - Im sure somebody can advise.

It keeps displaying message on each page of app "a network problem occurred. Please check your connection or try again later"

Can't understand it as Internet on phone is working perfectly well

The pocket radio is an AM/FM one. The Ashes will be on as well so I'm not really sure how that's going to work. That might actually lessen the crowds to the course which is both a good thing and a bad thing.

Phones are allowed. Obviously must be on silent and calls can only be made in designated areas.

Fair enough. I haven't been there in three years. A lot has changed since then. Phones aren't blocks anymore for one thing.

Not sure if I think that's a great idea.

Things much have changed, I was there in Turnberry for the open and they were extremely strict on phones. They had to be handed in at the turnstiles and saw them being confiscated out on the course...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,704 ✭✭✭Speak Now

With social media things have changed, of course you must have their app downloaded or phone will be confiscated. If phone is not on silent and you're caught then you will be ejected.

I made up the bit about the app ;-)

One for those of you experienced on getting there.

Driving over so had planned to take the car all the way to Muirfield and park and ride. But reading the thread on the benefit of the train, would you say its still worthwhile leaving the car somewhere else and getting the train ? Even if its slow to get in an out would it really save any time (not to mention the extra few quid for 4 of us in train tickets versus parking fee). Thanks.
