    Hi folks,

I'll be in Galway for the weekend and was wondering if ye have any gift ideas that I can bring back to the country of Cork?:pac:

Not a claddagh ring! Something cheaper, and Galway-ee. Chocolates would be nice but I'm afraid they'll melt on the way back.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks.

Something made with connemara marble? You can get jewellery, keyrings, bookmarks, etc all made from it.

Haven't they opened the new brewery in Oranmore yet? :)

How about taking a hippie home, there's plenty spare in Galway in the summer! ;)

How about some of the paintings or photos of city scenes available in the market? Many of the smaller ones are pretty reasonable...

Nautical (admiralty) chart of Galway bay. Approx 30euro, and you can probably get them in Galway Maritime down the docks.

I will be footing the turf at the weekend.

For a genuine Galway experience, why don't you give me a hand - I'll even throw in a free bag of genuine Galway turf which is very sought after. The EU is after our bogs - getting you hands on some Galway turf is a bit like having a bit of the Berlin Wall in your posession.

You work for the little people, so you do.

Hows about a Seavite gift pack? Probably a bit out of budget if a ring is though. Or is it the symbolism you're trying to avoid there? :P

    Stop! They'll beat me.

I think the photo/painting from the market is a good idea too.

OP have a look at this site: http://www.madeingalway.ie/ you can find plenty of ideas there.

Judy Greene in Kirwan's Lane is also worth a look.
The Bone Carving Studio (2 Victoria Place) sells some stunning and unusual pieces. You can even book a class to carve your own piece.

You should also have a look here: https://www.facebook.com/MyShopGrannyLikesIt?ref=ts&fref=ts This shop sells stuff from Irish crafters, many of them local.

Hope you'll enjoy your stay in Galway

Agreed. I got a copy of a painting last year from the market featuring the Cathedral and canal w/ fishermen all done in this Van Gogh Starry Night style. Love it!

Always great quintessential Galway photos there too.

I remember buying a few wood carved painted frames of Galway's Pubs.

Some guy down the market used to do this by hand. Excellent quality.

Family in the US and Oz loved them, remember sending: The Dew Drop Inn, The Quays and Taaffes (iirc) and they sit proudly on their walls now.

I haven't seen him in a while though, but maybe another Boardsie may know where he is?

There are some terrible girlfriend present ideas here.
They are great ideas for a dad or a relative abroad, but not for a gf. :)

Get the Judy Greens or the jewelry if it's nice. Otherwise get her a stick of rock and something complete un-Galway related.
Be sure to send her a pic of somewhere lovely you visit and say "wish you were here". If you find nothing nice to buy then just buy the chocs on the way home. :)
